Naughty Dog Talks Uncharted Movie, Praises PlayStation 3

Naughty Dog recently said that if there was enough demand for it, they'd certainly work on another Uncharted title. Furthermore, early whispers about the movie, which have coincided with the critically acclaimed launch of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , have begun to increase in number and intensity.

Thankfully, Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig addressed both issues in a New York Magazine interview , where they spoke about the link between games and movies. Here, she definitely confirms the Uncharted film and she adds that they've got "the best possible partners" in Columbia Pictures. "I can say from the meetings I've had with them so far, their hearts and their heads are absolutely in the right place," Hennig said. This is great news for those who will be immediately skeptical, simply because Hollywood has continued to butcher some of the finest game experiences of the past decade. As for whether or not there will be another Uncharted 2 , we figure it's probably inevitable but Hennig said she couldn't answer that question. The question also asked whether or not a new game would be on Sony's next PlayStation console – which seems really unlikely to us – and Hennig replied:

"On a completely general level, the PS3 is an amazing piece of hardware that both us and other developers are only now tapping into its full potential. There’s a lot of life in that box. That’s really the best answer I can give you."

We can live with that for now. Uncharted 2 is the type of game that we can play for a good long time and remain happy, and furthermore, it will be the measuring stick against which all other action/adventure games will be compared. In short, this game will have a ton of longevity, regardless of how far off another series installment might be.

This is one game that I know will make a great film. The game is a movie in itself. I wanted for all the cut scenes to be put together and the gaps filled in so I could watch Among Thieves as a movie after I completed the single player missions. I will be attending any Uncharted movie that hits the big screen. Count me in, Naughty Dog.

Can understand why its not worth repeating here, but still curious about how a racist comment can come about from an article about an Uncharted movie…

because only white guys with popped collars and BMWs will go see it?

Or it could be the fault of people from Tanzania. Not sure how but I could see a racial debate being fueled by Tanzanians in regards to Uncharted.

Disclaimer: I don't know anyone from Tanzania, and have absolutely no ill will towards them.

I was psyched for an Uncharted movie after playing the first one, but now I'm not so sure. Now we all have it ingrained in our hearts and minds exactly what Nathan Drake looks, acts, and talks like. How can any Hollywood actor compare to that?

On an unrelated note, who is John Shepard?

Shepard isn't listed on the "staff" page, even though his name (by-line) is a link to that page. It probably hasn't been updated recently. Shadow isn't listed (by that pseudonym) either.

BTW I feel nostalgic seeing the names from the past.

Since I first played Uncharted 1, I thought Nathan Fillion would be a shoe-in for the role, whether in the game or in a movie. He has the same looks, many of the same characteristics and attitudes displayed in his "Captain Mal" and "Castle" characters.

Well, missed what te le 14 said, oh well. But they're saying they're just now tapping into the full potential? Didn't they say they used the full power of the PS3 already for U2 before it came out? I really wish people would make up their minds.

As time goes on I think developers learn how to squeeze more and more out of the ps3. If they maxed the ps3 out already then there wouldn't be anything to look forward to in the coming next couple of years. Look at the ps2, GTA for instance. Every GTA looked better then the last, even though it was the same console.
I think/hope they got a ways to go until they (or whoever) max the ps3 out.

Im torn.
One one hand, a well made Uncharted movie has incredible potential.
On the other hand Uncharted is inherently cinematic and doesnt really need a movie. Unless they get the best actors in the world there is no way they are going to reproduce the subtlety ND put into each character's… uh…. character.

I totally agree with you. I mean, I would really love to see a movie based on Uncharted… if its good. But there are so many ways to go wrong that the thought scares me.

Despite some major changes from the game, I thought Silent Hill was one of the best game-to-movie adaptations ever and it's all because the director had played and loved the games. Sure the plot was a little different but it still had the same look and feel. For a game-to-movie adaptation to work the people making the movie need to love the game.

If the Uncharted crew is allowed full control over the movie, from writing, to casting, to direction, and scoring, then I'll give it a real chance but the only sure fire way to guarantee success is to make a fully CG movie. That way it would look, feel, and sound EXACTLY like it should.

Doosharm, no.

SH the movie was a shambles. Absolutely disgusting piece of work that has none of what made SH unique and special. It was too uptempo, too action packed, made no sence, too dumbed down, all done for money…it was a disgrace and i won't forgive hollywood for it.

SH is extremely slow and hypnotic. It should of put the audience in a trance via Akiras soothing music, still camera in the same uneasy position for long periods of times. It should of had dreamy, slurred dialogue which is few and far between and gaps between words are fairly long…which also emphasises the hypnotic state which ultimately gives the audience an uneasy feeling and a feeling of isolation. No "realistic screaming", a LOT more character development done without concentrating on dialogue, not too much emphasis on creatures (why the f*ck was creatures from James's mind in the movie!?) infact, perhaps show a minimum of 2-3 creatures and have them on camera for no longer than 5 seconds.

I could go on and on about what needed to be done.

It was nonsense.

Rant over 🙂

What movie is a better game adaptation if Silent Hill is so bad?

It has none of what made SH unique and special? What about the camera angles that were taken directly from scenes from the game? What about the authentic look and feel to many of the monsters? What about the same creepy noises like the radio static and the siren? …the look of the destroyed streets and the inside of the school… all of the creepy tortured corpses?

So you would have preferred they make an extremely long and slow paced movie all filmed with a single camera, infrequent and slurred dialogue, yet somehow develop the characters more, and only have infrequent interactions with any monsters?

Sounds like a pretty crappy movie to me.

I never said it was a perfect movie, but given the competition it is still the best game to movie adaptation. Unless maybe you think Super Mario Bros. is better?

they just need to get Emily Rose (Elena's voice actress) to play her in the movie, she's already perfect for it! and the connection to the game would skyrocket the possibility of it being a good adaptation.

The more I watch "Castle", the less I see Fillion as Drake. He's probably too old now. He can do the quips, though. If they're gonna go old, they might as well use Nolan.

I totally agree with you (and Zet) about Emily Rose, though.

I think Uncharted 2 is the longest action advent game i've played thus far. I'm still not through.
Compared to Gears2,Killzone2,RE5,MGS4,Uncharted1,CoD……….Uncharted 2 by far, has a longer campaign!

It'll be good to see the movie, though movies aren't really my thing.

uncharted 2 is a modern take on raiders of the lost ark ..now the film studios have been waiting to modernise it now harrison is getting on abit.. so take the opportunity now!

you couldnt follow Harrison Ford unique a one off in those films, you wOuld have to make sumthing very similar ala UNCHARTED 2!! Loads of life in this franchaise.

I'd love to see an adventure with drake starting in the depths of Cairo, heading into the Sahara to find a lost pyramid, and then chasing an ancient Egyptian artifact through the grasslands and jungles of Africa, up the African coast, through some of the trading ports of the Mediterranean and on to Turkey and the catacombs under Istanbul. Of course the uber-destructive finally needs to happen at a partially re-constructed crusader stronghold in the mountains of Turkey. This time though, the villain needs to be a lady…

Perhaps I need to talk to ND….

You would have to have just the right actors to do the Uncharted characters any justice. Ideally, they should use all the voice actors they already have since hearing any other voices at this point would seem strange. Maybe do a CG movie with the actors we know and love. But if Nolan North can't be drake, then I feel that Nathan Fillion is the only other choice for Drake (they even share a first name :P). But Naughty Dog needs to be involved in every aspect in order to do this right.

Nathan Fillion would make an awesome Drake. I just have so little faith in Hollywood… We'll get some CGI crapfest with really lame characters and really awful dialog – just so something blows up really big every 5 minutes. I think the last talented person left Hollywood about 10 years ago.

But Uncharted 3 – that will be awesome!!!

ive said it before and ill say it again for about the 900th time!

The cast that does the voice acting are all actors, and some stunt doubles as well! Watching how both games were made these voice actors, for the game are all acting, as they voice act, meaning they are really trying to put emphasis into the cut scenes and the characters! not to mention north kinda looks like drake, and the guy who does sully, o boy do they resemble eachother besides his height! and his voice has to stick perfect to make it right, just like hayter for snake!

anyways i dont think ill get the amazing feeling when i see the movie and i notice distinct differences for each character! I want a movie really bad but im afraid ill critiscize a little bit. I've grown to love each distinct trait about each character and i just think anyone else who played the roles would take all that away! So maybe i just wont see it lol 😉 yeah right…

Uncharted 3 on Playstation 3 in year 5 or 6 of the system's life. Sounds like perfect timing to me.

As for a movie, I like it. I want it. Everyone has Nathan Fillion or Nolan North in mind for the part of Drank, and I can see either of them in the part.

However one of the things that my wife and I have noticed about the Drake character is his great similarity in terms of style, sense of humor and 'look' to Lt. Col. John Sheppard in Stargate Atlantis played quite entertainingly by Joe Flanigan. Check IMDB for his credits. He also has more than a passing resemblance to Drake…
