The franchise has had its fair share of ups and downs, but there's no doubt it's one of the most successful in industry history.
According to Videogamer , EA has just revealed that the revered and immensely popular Need for Speed series has topped 100 million units sold worldwide to date. It was the latest release – Need for Speed: SHIFT – that allowed the franchise to hit this lofty plateau and overall, these titles have brought in over $2.7 billion in sales. Said EA Games president Frank Gibeau:
"Few video game franchises ever reach the 100M units mark, so this is a huge honour. We have millions of fans to thank for driving us to this milestone. With the launch of Need for Speed Shift and the upcoming release of Need for Speed Nitro, we hope to continue to deliver the most entertaining, action-packed racing experiences."
We saw the first Need for Speed way back in 1994 and since then, gamers have enjoyed 15 total entries on 14 different platforms; the titles have been released in 22 languages in over 60 countries, and for ridiculous numbers, players have raced over 279 billion miles of roads and race tracks (have no idea how EA knows this), and there have been 17 trillion user-generated vehicle customizations. …that sounds like one of those made-up numbers NASA likes to use. Over the years, the series has also locked down some major star power; the likes of Brooke Burke, Christina Milian, Maggie Q, Kanye West, Emmanuelle Vaugier, and Josie Maran have all been involved with NFS at some point.
Wait, wait, there's one more funny one: if you laid out all the NFS boxes that were sold, that line of copies would stretch across 173,609 football fields. That's just plain amusing.
haha simply put…wow lol
Make NFS:Most Wanted 2 or Hot Pursuit 3 and watch sales fly even higher.

a NfS HP III remake/rerelease would be beast!
I'm in the wrong business. I should have stuck it out in college and finished my animation degree. =P
I'd rather see NFS high stakes 2, and under ground 3.
I forgot about NFS:High Stakes, that one was very good also. NFS:Carbon was Under Ground 3.
…and i have never played any of them =P

Y?
How's that possible?
Pretty sure Road and Track presents Need for Speed was what got me hooked on playstation1 …. I should see if its laying around.
did it come out for PS? I thought it was just 3DO and PC.

Yup it was on PS1. My copy somehow ended up in my little brothers pile of games. lol
Great memories of that game, is the one I liked the most after HP 1 and 2.
Damn! I feel like finding a copy of the original one and playing it again 🙂
those numbers are wow…
"NFS:Carbon was Under Ground 3", please never speak those words again, lol, I couldn't even play that demo for five minutes. Yeah but I love me some highstakes, I still remember my buddy coming over stating my camaro was no match for his firebird needless to say a few minutes later I owned his firebird, he did put a good fight until the end, damn near a photo finnish. Why can't NFS be that fun again.
Yeah I remember having similar challenges between friends and my brothers. I think the last NFS game I truly had fun with was Most Wanted. I haven't played Shift to much yet and the one that came out last year I have but haven't played yet.
@Streets_74
Sorry I won't mention Carbon again. Carbon was a pain in the a$$, those damn hill races. You would have to go back and redo a race because someone took over your territory (who ever came up with this should be forced to own a Pontiac Aztec).
I enjoyed NFS Undercover much more then NFS Shift.
I like both the Arcade and Sim racer, but when it ventures into the sim territory, my love for Gran Turismo makes it hard for me to enjoy a sim game.
In my opinion, if they mix Undercover and Shift, EA will have a winner.
Street racing, sim style.
I wonder what the total sales of the Ratchet and Clank Series are; that's been around forever.
Or (gasp) the Final Fantasy series, even!
Canada's contribution to the gaming world has been huge. EA made some brilliant moves back in the day and it has paid off in spades.
didn't guitar hero 3 alone make a billion
lol 1 billion?? with what userbase?
We get it EA, you're doing alright……NFS is now the Big Mac of gaming, millions served!
I don't suppose Kanye West will ever be invited back into NFS games.
Well if he decided to ruin this NFS moment by saying something like ' Now I know you've sold over 100 million copies of NFS worldwide, but Burnout Paradise was better'…then maybe you'd be right…except that Burnout Paradise is better then NFS imo… (although probably best not to compare the two, completely different style of games)
I haven't enjoyed a NFS game since Hot Pursuit 2.
I have never bought nor play a NFS game in my life. Gran Turismo and burnout franchises are my favorite by far. I'm glad NFS enjoys sucess.
My favourite is only MW, nothing beats that.
Yayyyyy.
I guess this is new sales only?
I enjoyed HP2 and Undercover but wasn't so keen on the rest.
where i love NFSS and am still playing it, i wish they would listen to there fans and do what weve been begging for decades.
NEED FOR SPEED HOT PURSUIT 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you got your hearing aid on EA?
come on, for christs sake its not that hard.
come to think of it, that should be the next poll ben.
what NSF game should EA make next?
99% of people will vote for hot pursuit 3.
im shocked, EA are normally a milking machine sucking as much money out of everything they can.
but the 2 sequels ive been screaming at the top of my lungs for, they refuse to touch.
other being BLACK 2
BLACK was the best FPS of the generation, criterion, EA WHAT THE $#@% ARE YOU GUYS WAITING FOR?????????????
my walking stick will be coming in soon!
At first I was like WTF 100 million! I didn't know it was ported to the f-ing Wii! lol Total franchise sales…dooh!
no comment!
That just seems crazy. Wow.
