The numbers we've much anticipated are finally here. After a 5 day delay, NPD has released hardware sales data for September, which tracked from August 30th through October 3rd. This data includes a week of Nintendo Wii sales at $199, the first full month of sales of the PS3 Slim at $299, two weeks of Halo ODST sales for the Xbox 360, a full month of sales for the Xbox 360 Elite at $299, and a meager two days of PSP Go sales. So how does the picture look?
Well, thanks to the much anticipated Slim model, the PlayStation 3 came out on top by a sizable 29k units ahead of the Nintendo Wii, which may indicate a rather epic battle brewing between both Sony and Nintendo yet again. More over, the PlayStation 3 outsold its main competitor, the Xbox 360, by nearly 140k systems, and that's despite the release of Halo: ODST, which took in a massive 1.5-million sold. Now, the PSP's sales are harder to gauge because of the limited time-frame this data captures following the PSP Go's release. With only two days of sales, we can say this much: for August 2009 the PSP sold 140k units. And if you look at September's data, the PSP sold over 190k units, a good 50k units higher.
The problem is this: can that 50k be attributed to the release of the PSP Go? Or the 5-week tracking period for the September data, as opposed to the 4-week track for August? I'd like to say it's the former. But we'll just have to wait for October's results to see if the PSP Go truly did provide some much needed momentum for the PSP brand.
Nintendo DS 524.2K
Sony PS3 491.8K
Nintendo Wii 462.8K
MS Xbox 360 352.6K
Sony PSP 190.4K
Sony PS2 146.0K
Duh! well i would of expected buy more but you know w/e. and i can't believe people are still buying ds's!
*people to buy more*
Im going for a go, THEN the ds lite.
Yay Sony crushes Nintendo once more!
"crushes"?
You know you could mention that nintendo price cut was in effect for 4 days while the ps3 cut was in effect for the full month. So those wii numbers are really scary.
GO ON THUMBS DOWN
Wii price drop was September 27th, wasn't it? The sales tracking ended October 3rd. That's a whole week. The numbers are great for Nintendo, but I still contend that the odds were somewhat against Sony.
I thumbs you down coz' you were enticing me 😉
I also DID mention that the PS3 had a full month of sales at $299, too.
but whats the global sales?
there is no compagny that knows any global sales and is accurate. Famitsu sometimes has sales but thats only for japan, in europe their really isn't nothing and in North america NPD is the most accurate even if it doesn't add wall mart.
And no VG chart is not accurate.
Let's hope the PS3 can continue this from here onwards.
Good News! With its great upcoming of Games! Playstation will Rock the Casbah!!
I really didn't think a price drop would matter that much but clearly I was wrong…
I was thinking that to seriously consider a PS3 you would want to have the following: an HD TV (~$700 and up), a few games to play ($120) and decent internet connection (~$50/month). If you could afford these three things then a hundred bucks give or take on the system wouldn't be that big of an issue.
It could also be that a lot of the uber titles are starting to come out. It will be interesting to see the impact of GoW3 and FFXIII on PS3 sales.
Good look'n number for the PS3. I knew the day I got a PS3 on launch that one day they would once again dominate, now I would like to find the people that laughed at me when I got one so I can rub this in their faces.
They'll just scream "NATAL!" at you lol. That or you won't find them because they're playing Uncharted 2 or Demon's souls.
You know, I don't want Sony to "crush" Nintendo. As much as I dislike the Wii, I have a lot of respect for the big N. I am glad to see Sony back up in the game, though. The Sony Vs. Nintendo wars have always been exciting to watch without M$ getting involved. With the 360 in last, maybe we can finally see the 'real' console battle continue. =)
I might agree with that.
Nintendo has several fantastic game franchises and some of the most recognisable characters. While the Wii isn't anything spectacular, Mario, Smash Bros. Zelda, Metroid, No More Heroes, they are all excellent games.
And Wii Sports is fun for parties.
Natal will go the way of the Wii, exciting at first but will die down quickly once people are sick of it. I really don't see how Halo or Gears will be able to incorporate it.

The xbox days r about over. The games for the ps3 are getting better and better. The only thing i would like to see with the ps3 is a better template for online.
That's what i'm talking about. Go Sony!
I hear that's the first time ps3 outsells both the wii and xbox since the ps3 launch in nov 06. I hope it's not the last time.
@ potato
I didnt even think about that. The wii barely got beat and they only had a week worth of sells with the price cut. Next month the wii will outsell the ps3 easily. I just hope the ps3 outsells the xbox all through the holiday season.
Holy crap. The DS is freakin' sick.. doesn't everyone in North America own one by now!! They should and they should now be getting the PSP.
The high DS sales are attributed to the high trade in ratio of DS originals and lites towards the DSi. Trades are not deducted from sales totals, but the DSi's just add to the total sales, so while about 50 million people own a DS, they altogether bought over 120 million DS's, so 2-3 DS's purchased per person.
And 74% of all statistics are made up.
So, basically, parents and casual gamers have wasted about 300-400 bucks on DS upgrades, trade ins and cheap shovelware games. I'd hate to have one of them as my financial advisor.
Ever since the launch of PS3 Slim, PS3 has caught up to Xbox by 1 million. Xbox just leading by 7 millions now. It makes me think how insignificant the sales leads are. Imagine how much they can catch up in a year? To be realistic, they wont catch up in 1 year, but that 13 million FY09 estimation isn't so farfetched.
I'm pretty certain the Xbox 360 is leading by a lot less than 7 million. Last I checked it was less than 4 million, with the gap still closing.
Im surprised people are still buying PS2s.
This is great. I can't wait to see what kind of sales jump this will be with Sony. Is it a one-month spike or is it a longer-lasting hills of PS3s?

Next Gen has officially begun
This will shock M$, even though they knew it was coming… I think R&D at M$ are working overtime and they are hoping to buy time with NATAL 🙂
Q!
"i am home"
Anyone who wanted to play STDS already owned an Xbox. I didn't think it would move units.
STDS? Nickname for Halo? If you mean Halo, then yeah it just shows how little MS knows about gamers. Halo for 6 more years lol. Watch them come out with a Halo RPG, then a Halo fighting game. Not that I have any problem with people who enjoy the Halo series. Just saying.. just saying.
Halo: Kart Racing Evolved will be a hot item Christmas 2010.
lol How about Halo Smash Brothers packaged into 1 with Halo Kart Racing? All for the low price of $179.99! Pre-ordering ensures you the latest demo of Halo Puzzle Fighter which you can unlock for a low 3000 MS points! Oh yes, a Halo fan's wet dream.
Sorry Halo players, I just couldn't resist. I kid!
Yes I was refering to Halo. Haha. I don't get the Halo love. It takes a special kind of nerd to keep buying the same damn game over and over with the same faceless character. What floats their boat I guess.
Wasn't the Halo RPG idea already being thrown around at some point? I thought I read something about that.
The tied is finally turning… watch 2010 for the home stretch… I expect that there will be more PS3's in existence by Christmas 2011 than XBots… now that is a Ratcher and a Clank isn't it? 🙂
Q!
"i am home"
Saweet!
/repitition
HaHa!!! I cant imagine the sales figures when GT5 and GOW3 comes out.
10 million right there!
I won't accept anything less
Great to have equated into that number!
i think the psp go did increase PSP sales.
but only 3000 sales, because people have known for a while a new psp was coming out so they waited out to see what its like.
than realized its a overpriced piece of …………..
and went back to the 3000.
i remember watching a video at E3 showing off the psp go, and the interviewer asked this lady from sony why they did not add a second nub.
and she replied because of compatibility, they want one in and she promised the next psp will definitely have one.
so that leads me to believe the next psp wont be a revision because than her argument why the go dident have one would be false.
for her statement to be 100% true the next psp must be the psp 2.
a full remake, not a revision.
after seeing that article about the "supposed" components for the psp 2 and next DS.
well it looks like the psp 2 is not far off at all.
as one said, its a gift and a curse.
gift because i sure as hell want one.
psp games in HD?
YES PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but than theres going to be allot of people who are not to happy about it, and well you know the media.
they will dig till there fingers bleed to find anything bad to say about anyone.
so let the sony witch hunting commence!
Right now it's all bout video games, and the first thing Sony need to do is bring franchise from the previous gen to the PS3.
A long running exclusive franchise will boost the sale just like MGS4 did, yes GT5 and GOW3 next year but they'll need more than that if they wanna beat the Wii.
Though in my opinion, Nintendo has already won the 7th Gen.

There are some interesting battles going on now, that's for sure.
Over in Japan, the Wii snapped the PS3's two-month streak by topping the PS3 in sales for September, albeit by just a paltry number (something like 10,000 units or so).
Yep, Sony only needed a price cut, just like many of us Sony Supporters have been calling for.
this is inevitable direction, considering how many awesome PS3 games have come and will be coming: Demon's souls, Uncharted 2, GOW3, Last Guardian, FF13, FFv13, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Infamous, LBP, MGS4….

How can NPD be taken as accurate when they do not include Walmart?
Jesus those wii numbers are massive. The wii price cut was in play for less then a week and it managed to almost catch up to the ps3's numbers. Looks like next month will most likely go to the wii……AGAIN
We' already have a PS3 and will be getting a wii for our younger ones this Xmas since the price is finally right…I wonder how many of those wii sales are actual secondary systems for consumers??
What do you mean by secondary systems? Do you mean people buying 2 Wii's for themselves or their family?
so what does that bring the total to now?
