Alpha Protocol Needs Time To “Fulfill Its ‘AAA’ Potential”

It would've been one of the more anticipated releases of the month, had it managed to hit its intended October 2009 release date. Instead, we have to wait for Obsidian Entertainment's Alpha Protocol until next year.

If you're wondering why Sega pushed the game into 2010, it doesn't have as much to do with the fact that it would battle established franchises, but that Sega simply wanted the extra time. They have lofty goals for this title, you see. According to GameCenterOnline , Sega has said that in order to "fulfill its 'AAA' potential," they are going to give Obsidian a few extra months to add more polish and refinement to the "Espionage RPG." Said Sega of America president Masanao Maeda:

"Since the inception of Alpha Protocol, Sega has recognized the potential for the game to establish itself as an AAA title. We’ve worked in conjunction with Obsidian Entertainment in making the decision to move Alpha Protocol’s ship date to spring 2010 to ensure that we have the best game possible at launch."

This is one of those times where we're okay with a delay. Not only do we have more than enough to play right now (and over the next month or so), but we also believe in giving game developers all the time they need to produce a quality title. And besides, the very concept of Alpha Protocol is very intriguing; we like the idea of having all sorts of decision-making freedom during our spy-like quest. Well, anyway, we'll let you know when Sega gets more specific than "Spring 2010" for a release date.

They may say they wanted to polish it a bit more, which may be part of the reason. However, i'm sure they were also thinking about trying not to release a new IP against the likes of uncharted 2 or Modern warfare 2. im not sure if its multiplatform or not because i wasnt really interested in it. As i read comment in this site, most people really dont have enough money to get more games this holiday season and new IP tend to take a back seat to established franchises other than for people who actually waited for the new game. but if you put Uncharted 2 or Modern warfare 2 against Alpha Protocol on the shelf, most people would choose U2 or MW2 instead of AP. The only problem with delaying it that i can see is that the insane ps3 lineup coming from sony at the beginning of the year. If Alpha Protocol is 360 exclusive then it really wont have any competition.

If it takes time to create a masterpiece, why rush. It's always better not to rush certain things elswise you'll screw up somewhere along the line. That's why I'm taking my time with the story I'm trying to draw into a manga (or possibly make into a video game when I finish getting my degree in Game Design).

Love the way they delay the release by six months, and then don't issue any sort of statement until a couple weeks after the release date has passed. Way to show respect for the people who were looking forward to it, and those who had pre-ordered it. Oh, but they care so much, they're going to make it into a AAA title. What a load of BS.

If it was a PS3/PC exclusive I can understand, but with a console which keeps the PS3 back there's no chance this is an AAA title

so batman AA was not a AAA title?
how about GTAIV?
or COD MW?
or bioshock?
or fallout 3?
or the orange box?
or rainbow six vegas?
or the darkness?
just because its on the 360 does not mean it cant be a AAA title.
