Why do we like inside information and extra insight on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves ? Because the game is so flippin' awesome, we just can't get enough.
Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells recently gave an interview to VG247 , where he spoke about the game's position in history, the future of motion control, the PS3 vs. the 360, the role of cut-scenes in games, and the comparatively small size of the team that created and produced Uncharted 2 . His responses are very interesting; he first says it's "definitely flattering" to have Nathan Drake amongst the likes of Mario and Solid Snake when people talk about the best games ever, and in terms of the PS3 and Xbox 360, Wells had this to say:
"I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3. Great programmers and great artists are going to make a great game. Naughty Dog will continue to push the PlayStation hardware as far as we can. We’re fortunate that we get to work on a system that has a hard drive and uses blu-ray for storage. Without these things, Uncharted 2 would have been a very different game. What we were able to do with the Cell processor allowed us to achieve a density of polygons and a fidelity to our effects that would simply not be possible without it. But ultimately, if we didn’t have a team of very talented programmers and artists, we wouldn’t have been able to take advantage of the hardware and achieve the results that we did."
Makes perfect sense to us. There's a reason why the exclusives on each platform outstrip even some of the best multiplatform titles; it's all about dedication and assembling the right team with the right set of skills for the project at hand. In regards to motion control, Wells said he really doesn't "think that motion control will supplant the traditional gaming controller any time in the near future." Basically, while he's "excited" to see new experiences on the horizon, Wells thinks motion-sensing-oriented games will have to "live alongside" the traditional titles on store shelves.
Good stuff, and feel free to read the rest of that interview. …then you can go back to playing the game. Because you know you wanna.
Related Game(s): Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
That was a funny comment. He said its all about the developer then kindly stated how the ps3 is much more powerful and usable than anything else and how Uncharted 2 would be "different" (read: not as awesome) on anything else.
Imo, devs need to stop playing politics and just say what they are thinking.
i think you missed the point…
what he is saying is devs have the potential to make great games on any console, but what they had to work with, within the ps3 and how powerful and how much storage it has witht the blu-ray and hdd as he mentioned helped them leaps and bounds to create uncharted 2: among thieves, that couldnt have been done elsewhere which he also mentioned. i dont think his intentions were in any way to bash a console 4 being less powerful, and he said what he meant therfore i dont believe he was playing politics.
This interview just goes to credit naughty dog, and how much they love to make games for the fans, and how much they love to make games for a living! Great company, and i will support them forever, for they do everything right!

Please, if anyone is known for playing politics and mud slinging it's MS and their developers. I just read another article about Aaron Greentoad saying again that Sony is out of touch and claiming the Xbox will sell forever. That guy can't speak without slandering or bad mouthing Sony.
Naughty Dog are professionals.

@jawknee
thats exactly my point i was trying to get across. Sony really has the most professional first party devs and naughty dog leads the pack!
M$ is running right now, and i think the reason for always bad mouthing sony is cus they have always felt like they had there backs against the wall. even in the beginning, when the ps3 first launched i think they sensed something, that has now finally become a reality to the nay sayers, the PS3 "only does everything".
Last edited by bigrailer19 on 10/16/2009 12:27:48 PM
Precisely. I have never heard or read Tretton, Hirai or any of Sony's first party devs bad mouth or say anything untrue about MS and their ilk. However it's easy to find any number of quotes from Greentoad, MS's devs and even some third party devs who are MS whores slandering and bad mouthing Sony.
It's refreshing to hear a dev like Naughty Dog tell us why they can do what they do and why they provide great products rather then hearing about why the competition sucks. MS never talks up their own products. All they know how to do is talk crap.
Throwing fecal matter at the competition isn't Sony's MO and im happy to support that.
@ Big and Jaek
Great comments!
I think they just stated the facts here. Talented teams make kick ass games. However, if the hardware takes cuts (No HDD-360 Arcade) and has some disabilities, like not being able to play a next gen format like blu-ray, then the devs have no choice but to limit their vision.
PlayStation 3 Only Does Everything!
I wish it did more!
I agree. I love my PS3 as is, but that doesn't mean it can't be better.
I want mine to be able to record TV programs, so I don't have to buy a hideously over-priced DVR from my local cable company.
Get on it, SCEA.
Also, can we please get the features the PSP has (e.g., skype)?
On topic: I agree that Wells hit just the right tone of praising the advantages of the PS3 without saying anything negative about the competition. ND (and most Sony devs) are such class acts.

that was an awesome interview! one of the best ive read in a long time!
Great interview mirroring the best game this generation hands down.
Only on Playstation.
This games is so damn epic it makes my head explode everytime I play it.

Jawknee and Bigrailer: Love your comments. You speak the truth with Irrefutible evidence. Great comments.
Anyways, I think MS new it was game over when Killzone 2 came out. We can even go back earlier to that time, when Unchartered 1 and MGS4 came out. Sony is so confident in their product and what it can do, and what the future holds for PS3, no competitor bashing is needed. Proof is in the pudding. Plus they don't want future consumers to know them as unprofessional. They simply will not associate themselves with bashers like MS (Even ol Reggie from Nintendo has been opening his mouth a little about PSP).
Whenever you have to bash your competition, you make your product and yourself look irrelevant. And MS have been doing a lot of bashing and blaintenly lying about Sony. In a way I love it. Goes to show they know they have an inferior product and they are just reaching. They know the 360 is obsolete and with their failure rate continually rising, it's game over for their super scam 360 box.
I think the final nail in the coffin for the 360 was when KZ2 came out, Unchartered 2 just totally sealed the deal. Game over MS. Time to get out of the video game business and go back to just making software, as when it comes to hardware you just have no clue in how to do it. Leave the console business to the big boys known as Sony and Nintendo. Hell if Apple got in the video game business, their first console would kick MS in the ass.
Anyways rant over, just as game is over for 3fixme.
Seriously, MS's constant Sony bashing says more about them and the level of confidence they have in their console then it does anyone or anything else.
Apple entering the market? That would be interesting indeed. I'd love to see what they have to offer. Just please, price it at a reasonable price. I love Apple products(typing this on my iPhone right now) Their prices always get me though.

Yeah, Apple tried to get into the video game market with their console, the Pippin, back in 1995 I think. It was an overpriced monster, with no good software releases, and died out in less than 2 years. It was slaughtered by the Sega Saturn and, of course, the Sony Playstation.
I'd be scared if they tried again, they seem like a company that would push more fluff-ware like the Wii cause it's cheaper and takes less time to produce than the average PS3 game, and yet, would sell more because they now how to market those "apps."
Though there are some rumors that they're looking to get back in the game, we'll just have to wait and see.
Naughty Dog is the king of developers in my book.
Uncharted 1 demonstrated it.
Uncharted 2 cemented it.
Speaking of the latter, I have just started chapter 7, and I am so impressed with this game in all of it's aspects, I have to wonder if this experience can be topped.
Well I think that they proved themselves when they did Crash Bandicoot. I just think they re-established what they can do when they made the Uncharted series. While I DON'T agree with you when you say they are the "king of developers," I will agree that, at the moment, they hold the crown and you can bet your ass that it's going to be a very large hill to overcome in order to dethrone them.
In the end, the gamers get the benefits. 😉

whoa, so humble… DAMN!
So true
Look at how ps3's exclusives push the ps3
While garbage like Bayonetta can't
By your logic, Street Fighter IV should cease being a good game. I won't argue against exclusives, but Bayonetta is still a good game. It could be better, were it exclusive, but garbage it isn't.
Ok ok 😛
But not as good as something like GOWIII will be, that's for sure.
Just saying, as far as pushing the console, ya know.
So: It doesn't matter which system its on but depends upon the developers? Except that only PS3 allows the best games possible because of the cell right? Well, some might call those contradictory statements but I think they pretty much laid the smack down.
Last edited by WorldEndsWithMe on 10/16/2009 4:47:54 PM
They pretty much laid the bacon.
i think you missed the point to world.
the point he is saying is great games dont have to be on one console… the developer makes the game and its up to them to make a great game. But what he is saying is the PS3 gives devs alot to work with and can make stellar games along the way!
Mgs4 can be on 360. But prepare for sacrifices like down graded graphics and sound. Not evertyhing gets cut though… you will at least have more dvd's to play it than just one blu-ray.
Well… I think this guy has just put himself in the same area that I put Kaz Hirai and Jack Tretton. That area is one of respect. It's refreshing to hear people like this not put down the competition but still support only one console.
As for Uncharted… When I think of games I have a standard that a hold against them in comparison. Well this game blew those standards out of the water and raised the bar.
I unfortunately started Brutal Legend AFTER Uncharted 2 and I already am comparing the levels of polish. Uncharted is just plain ridiculous. (I really like Brutal Legends btw) It's very odd that things like repetition in dialogue come up and we pass it off as "Oh it's just a video game." Well After playing Uncharted I am almost embarressed by hearing them. So… the bar on what video games can be = Raised.
Done with rant. Now on topic: If developers are the ones that make the best out of the hardware in question… Then I'd say Playstation is pretty lucky to have Naughty Dog on their side. Cause… Damn…

By comparison, GOWIII makes Bayonetta look like a PS2 game. But when I say Bayonetta isn't garbage, I'm talking mostly about its gameplay.
And maybe ONLY Naughty Dog could deliver such a beautiful graphic on PS3…
I think im the only ps3 owner in the world who hasn't played uncharted 2 at all (including demo).
u need to get on it!
i just finished it lieterally 20 min ago, and i have to say its the best game ive ever played in my life! ive never felt the way i did during that last cutscene! from the dialogue, to the gameplay, to the graphics, ND absolutely hit the nail on the head with uncharted 2: among thieves. and in saying so that doesnt take anything away from uncharted: drakes fortune either because that game also is up high on my list! this game just seems to do everything right!
hey wanna borrow my copy 😉 lol
I downloaded the demo…3 times, it just doesn't work on my ps3 T-T Believe me if i could play this game i would.
No I haven't either and i wish I could but no job so I don't have the money, I almost wish I had preordered UC2 instead of GoWIII
I have an xbox360 (and a PS3, of course!) and I have to say I fuggin` hate microsoft. The only reason I have a 360 is for the games (obviously) not because I`m a Microsoft fanboy. I am so sick and tired of Microsoft bad-mouthing Sony that the more they do it the more I respect and support Sony. Over the past 12 months 90% of games I`ve purchased were for the PS3, even mutliplatform games like Battlefield:Bad Company and Burnout Paradise. Every time someone from Microsoft opens their dirty, disrespectful mouths they drive me a little further away. Everything about the PS3 (from the quality of the system to the professionalism of it`s developers) is far superior to what Microsoft has to offer. Microsoft needs to grow up.
I've never taken well to bullies or the bully attitude either. I can't stand it.
"I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether itâs on the Xbox or PS3"
"Weâre fortunate that we get to work on a system that has a hard drive and uses blu-ray for storage"
wow did he just contradict himself or what?
he says something, that goes stating against it.
hhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm
ive got infinate respect for the guy and ND, but when developers and publishers speak do they listen to what they say?
like seriously every interview i read either, makes no sense or the dev or publisher are completely contradicting themselves.
I read it and understand it as follows; that great games can be on any console. However the PS3 does afford developers with certain extra advantages, such as with the inclusion of the expandable HDD and BD drive. It's not to say however that because of these added benefits, less polished games (for whatever reason(s)) aren't produced and then subsequently released for the PS3.
According to the above interview, it seems as though he's just stating that really it's in the devs hands to be familiar with the system and to work as well as possible within it's framework.
In conclusion great games can be made for any system, as well as less than stellar ones. It is thanks to the PS3's hardware however (if taken advantage of) that games made for it such as exclusives (usually) or even multi-platform games that are built using it's architechture can have a greater edge. 🙂

This guy have a point.
Look at Bungie, they developed one of the best FPS in history back in the 6th gen and in the 7th with Halo 3, though the not so improved Halo 3: ODST proved one thing to the whole world:
"That's as far as DVD can go."
I don't want to sound like I'm defending Microsoft or their decisions, because I've hated them since long before they entered the console business, but I do want to make one point about the "DVD failz" arguments.
Incognito fit all of Warhawk into a c. 800 MB download. That's a little larger than a CD. Sure, it's not Uncharted-pretty, but it's plenty big. DVD isn't the limiting factor that people want to pretend it is. I'd rather have a Blu-ray, though.
Are we now up to the point where graphics and console capabilities do matter?
Anyways, I expect the same thing from se when developing a remake of final fantasy VII (if it ever happens).
I think its another way of saying if some multiplat games look bad on the ps3, its not the machine but the developers fault, which is true, as proven by uncharted 2.
