It's one of the few big features still missing from the PlayStation Network, despite the fact that online multiplayer fans have been pining for it since Day 1.
But perhaps we won't have to wait much longer for cross-game chat. The previous rumor we heard said Sony would deliver it in the next firmware update for the PS3 and now, a Naughty Dog developer – perhaps inadvertently – has essentially confirmed this rumor to be true. This happened in the official PlayStation forums and the post has since been deleted, but PlayStation University caught it before it disappeared:
"I think they wanted people to have fun and enjoy the show since all dead players can talk to each other no matter what team you are on. But I will suggest it anyway. Not to mention that the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat. So if players use that instead of in game communication then they would also be able to communicate enemies positions."
Okay, good. That might be one of the last big hurdles for the Network and if Sony does indeed clear it soon, that will make this holiday season that much merrier for those who spend a lot of time with their headsets. And once that happens, the gap – in terms of features and bells and whistles – between the PSN and Xbox Live will almost be non-existent, and given the unbelievable original exclusive software on the PSN…well, the online competition may be shifting in Sony's direction.
Everything is already shifting in Sony's direction.
Be it online, online entertainment and gaming.
I guess the PS3 is just a late bloomer, now Microsoft got a lot of work to do and they'll need more than Natal to aid them.
And cross game chatting?
Dude! it's gonna be like this:
Arnold: "Dude!!! I just created a new map in LBP, come on in!!!"
Ben:"Wait, what? NOOOOOOOOOO, look what you've done!!! I lost my match in Call of Duty!!! And I gambled all my property on it!!!!!"
lol

Hey, Mic's in Battlefield 1943 will finally work. All joking aside, i can't believe we are still waiting on this feature.
All joking aside, I can't believe that anyone is actually waiting for this feature…
its gonna he nice 😉
Yeah snake, you said it very well, everything seems to be shifting over to Sony now. I mean if you think about it, you could argue that 08 was a strong year in terms of PS3 exclusives, but 09, undoubtedly the year for Sony, i mean with all these exclusives, the PS3 slim, the price cut, the added editions going on to Home and the PSN network, future exclusives (including the one Ben spoke about that i have no idea yet what it is) and even the controller coming out. I honestly don't see hardcore gamers buying into either of Sony's or Microsoft's motion controller schemes. But it will bring in a more casual market. Nonetheless, hardcore gamers really make up the big chunks in terms of revenue, and seeing games like Unchartered 2 utilize the potential of the PS3 and the awesome Blue Ray, i mean what's not to love. It's funny how some people compare the visuals between certain games on both platforms, when in essence it's really not comparable because when a game is mainly produced for the Xbox 360 because of ease of production, then they port over the game to PS3, it really isn't fair to compare the visuals. I know sites who generally always seem to praise the 360 and really ridicule Sony. I'm no fan boy, i appreciate both consoles, i have a PS3 and my roommate has a 360 so i love both. But i think Ben said it best, it's these jealousies which really are the bottom line, there shouldn't even be console wars like this. If everyone claims to be an avid gamer, then forget about the fighting and just games for what they are, games. That's what the industry arguably was founded on, the appreciation of games. Just play and enjoy!!
This is great news! I'd rather have voice messenging tho.
Only a matter of time. Sony have looked after us well so far, taking time, ensuring quality and not rushing any features. The PS3 and PSN has come a long way since it's release and is showing no signs of slowing down.
All i can say..Uncharted 2 is amazing…and..chloes kinda sexy 😉 lol
hm, I couldn't really find chloe as sexy as elena but that's just taste =P
i dont know i agree with dg08
im all for blondes and elena is nice to stare at on my t.v. lol, but the dark hair the raspy voice, and the hard core attitude chloe has makes me tingle! 😉
hmm oddly enough its comicle we are even discussing how sexy vid. characters are!
Elena for me 😉
Gotta love Chloe's voice…
give me cloe over Elena any day.
Chloe has a attitude and as sulley says shes a feisty one.
good looking, feisty and has a attitude.
what more could you ask for?
& i hope we get cross game chat!!! it'll be a big big thing for Ps3 owners to have!
Exactly! this will actually give me a reason to get a mic lol
I'd like to have the ability to put my saves on a network so when I'm playing a game downstairs I won't have to restart the same game in order to play upstairs…..
All you have to do is stick a thumb drive in and copy your saves… not that hard.
A thumb drive works on the PS3?!?!
Never knew that.
It only does Everything
Ah man……..17 days till I get my 80GB PS3!!!!
By the way, the PS3 I'll be getting is custom tax-free XD.
i can finally use like a ph for free
Please oh please be true.
The lack of this feature has been keeping me from playing online games with my friends.
m not interested!
i would also liove to have the option to be able to change my psn id without losing all my trophies and such. that would be schweeeet!!!
I don't like this cross chat feature, I can see it now two idiots, idiot one in my squad playing mag running around not listening to orders, telling idiot two who's playing uncharted two, that he just killed twelve people. This is going to be worst than playing cod4 while listening to some idiot on the phone the whole time. God that pisses me off so now instead of one idiot doing this I might have a squad talking about every thing and nothing to do with the game we're actaully playing, unless all games will have an ingame mute option.
Don't forget the whole voices from the grave thing a the player that gets snuffed out in a hail of pullets calls in a rocket strike from his buddies whe are not yet dead…
Something like, "Hey guys, they're all in the sniper nest above the Ice cave, the one on the left. Nail them!"
FINALLY AY!
lol
Don't need this feature
How many (not-stupid) people even have mics anyway?
Great question
Not many I assume
That said, I don't wanna be bothered when I'm playing my ps1/ps2 games on my ps3.
Specially not when I'm playing story-based games.
Now thats something we need first and formost… in game XMB on ps1 and ps2 games…
it sucks playing medievil and getting messages… gotta either save, or lose everything
streets 74
i dont think it will work like that mate, if your chatting to ppl from your friends list, then the mic wont be activated for the game your playing, so you'l either have ur mic for mag, or to talk to ur friends, you wont be able to hear other ppl talkin to their friends who are playing other games.
Ok now i believe people who are competitive such as myself online are going to start freaking about cheating. I believe Sony will filter a way to prevent communication between friends during multiplayer or whatever. Just like how they filter trophies for save files, they will do the same thing with cross video game chat.
why is this such a huge deal? it's not even that amazing of a feature…phones have been around for more than 100 years…and they're cross anything chat
do people who buy ps3s buy them to play games or make telephone calls?
i mean seriously, im starting to think people are buying ps3s for the wrong reasons.
if you want to talk to a friend for free buy a psp.
or theres a great new invention called the cup and string.
and best part it only costs a few pennys.
Well, you know what they say, it only does everything….
Seriously, I agree. Cross game chat is such a straw-man of a feature. It's continually raised by fans of A.N.Other console as if it was a mandatory 'next Gen' feature. Well, excuse me for being a luddite, but I thought that this generation was all about high definition gaming and such like, not telephone calls.
I think this is an excellent feature, and something I've missed many times. I'm a former PC player and on that platform a chat server/client is almost to be considered mandatory setup – for example if you and a buddy is playing the same single player game, you can discuss tactics or experiences or just talk plain bullsh*t while gaming. Just to mention one simple example.
What a slip lmfao
