Pachter On Brutal Legend: “It’s Going To Be Profitable”

You know, we've been telling you to pay attention to Tim Schafer and Double Fine's Brutal Legend for quite some time now. Yes, it launches today alongside the insanely awesome Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , but Shafer's metal-infused title already snagged a 9.0 from IGN and should be worthy of your attention. Most all Schafer's stuff is .

And thankfully, this time around, the gamers might finally reward him. It has been this guy's unfortunate tradition to produce great games that go nowhere on sales charts but Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says Brutal Legend finally pays him back. If you check out the latest Bonus Round Episode , Pachter is confident the anticipated title will sell well, despite being tossed amidst some blockbuster October productions:

"I think this thing’s going to be the sleeper hit of the holiday season. When I say that I mean a couple million units, so it’s not going to be Gears of War type numbers. It’s going to be a profitable game and it is a little bit on the niche side except Jack Black makes it much, much more mass market."

You know, in all honesty, we didn't really think of that. We've wanted Brutal Legend to make an impact since we heard about it, and we did worry about the niche metal flair. But Jack Black does help to bring the game to more people and besides, we're seeing that commercial for the game quite a bit. So maybe – just maybe – Schafer will reap the benefits of his hard work.

I played the demo, not impressed. After talking to alot of my gamer friends they agree too. If you like Heavy Metal/Hard Rock then this game seems like it would be right up your alley. It just seems like a limited audience game. I'll probably rent it when I've finished all of the other big titles coming out, this title is a definite pass in my book.

I guess Schafer can sleep well at night, now that he has Pachter's blessing.

I played the demo and while I am buying it on Friday with Uncharted 2 I get the feeling it will be pretty much the same walking round killing the baddies with your axe and guitar. Now dont get me wrong the demo was good but from what I seen afterwards in the coming soon part was that it all looked a bit too repetative. I hope it is not, the bosses look different but if the main part is similar I can see myself and possibly others getting bored with it.

Yeah if your a rock/metal fan then the game might be for you. I am gonna give it a try all the same 🙂

The demo was a great introduction to the game but there is so much more to it. Very entertaining.

I played the demo and then read IGN's review and wondered if they were talking about the same game…

It sounds to me like the demo wasn't really representative of the meat of the gameplay. Open world? RTS elements? There was nothing like that in the demo. Now I'm even more confused about what the gameply is supposed to be like.

I am buying it, but after I'm finished with Uncharted 2 single player.

I started this adventure last night and got through the first four missions. This game is the sh**! Lots of laughs, great character interactions, extremely creative levels, etc. I am so glad that I purchased this thing. The people involved with this one have a serious gift with getting people to connect with their product. I'd pay full price for it.

I was playing the Demo again last night, and my wife (who hasn't seen it yet) was giggling at what was happening.

Two Thumbs Up!!

people have got to stop thinking of the demo as the representation of the full game there are many things that they didn't show in the demo and are going to be in the full game

What are you supposed to do with the demo then? It's supposed to give you a taste of what the full product will be. If someone didn't like the demo, they probably wouldn't like the game.

people have to stop thinking like that.
most of the time demos are a very bad portray of a game, thats why devs dont like doing demos.
i loved the demo of haze, we all know how that turned out.
i HATED the demo of uncharted made me frustrated.
i hated the demo of infamous.
i hated the demo of ninja gaiden sigma 2.
but after buying the full version of all those games im glad i did.

if your not sure on a game, play the demo if the games not out.
if it is rent it, dont pass on the game just because you did not like the demo.
if i did that i would of missed out on some of my favorite games.

I see lots of the commercials too and it makes it look pretty sweet, it sure has some hard competition for cash though.

Pachter is right on the money. It's going to be a three way battle this holiday season between, Uncharted 2, Tekken 5 and Call of duty modern warfare 2. Brutal Legend is going to have to fight just to get the scraps.

If you ever have a typo or something, and the Edit option has disappeared, hit the Reply under your username and then people can see it. No biggie, though. We understand. 😉

Gotta get a weapon, I'm unarmed!

Lol.
Those are my favorite lines in the demo, when you hit the action button with no weapon in hand. I could listen to it all day

"the gamers might finally reward him."

OBJECTION! I've been putting money in Schafer's pockets since Monkey Island. He built his company off of guys like me! I'd say that's a damn good reward. 19 years later the guy repays me with Jack friggin' Blaaaack ??

I'll be picking it up at some point but I ordered uncharted 2 first because it was actually cheaper.
I've only seen BL for $70, which is 80 after tax. Retailers need to stop that new price testing, I don't care if they costed 60 for a decade it's still plenty today. I refuse to pay that much for a game just as I refuse to pay 30 bucks and up for a bluray.

Isn't Demon's Souls the biggest sleeper this year?

Because most people know what Metal is and who Jack Black is.
But "What the hell is a Demon's Soul"?

A "sleeper (hit)" is a game (or movie or whatever) that wasn't expected to sell well and did, usually as the result of word-of-mouth sales.

Unless Demon's Souls sells well (and with so few copies in stores, how can it?), it won't be a sleeper hit.

Batman: AA is a perfect example of a sleeper hit. No one expected the review scores or the eventual hype it received and it sold MUCH better than anyone could have predicted six months ago.

its funny ive noticed this year when playing games i always enjoy games i were not going to get the most.
weird, like i was not going to get infamous, the gameplay and videos looked boring to me but now its my favorite game this year.
i was not going to get this because its on the same day as U2 and opp2.
but some how i managed to get brutal legend and opp 2 on the 10th of october, 5 days before their release.
and so so so glad i did because if they kept their original date i would of missed out on brutal legend.
one complaint though.
jack black swears to much.
make sure you dont have your granny visiting while playing this, otherwise you will be missing a ear or 2 and you will have a very sore red toung.
i hope you like english mustard.

The general impression I get is that not too many people are interested in this game. I'm into metal, but I don't have any interest in it. Maybe for Jack Black fans, I dunno. We'll see, maybe it will sell well over Christmas or something.

With all the crappy music on the radio, I bought this game as a way to voice my opinion about that. The soundtrack alone makes this game worth a purchase and I've always liked Tim Schafer's games. It's no Uncharted 2 but it's going to be very popular with the mainstream and older gamers who despise the Lady Gagas and Jonas Brothers of the world. However, I expect many more sales of this game on the 360 side because of Uncharted 2.

I liked the demo, there's some God Of War mixed with some simple RTS. Yes, I'd rather have Demon's Souls but that game is sold out everywhere in Ottawa so Brutal Legend is a great fallback game.
