You don't know it yet because most of you don't have Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , which is slated to launch on Tuesday (although we've heard of some people snagging it early from places like Target). But there's a video interview within the game that's well worth watching…
Thing is, even if you haven't seen this unbelievable action/adventure title on your TV screen just yet, you've likely seen videos and screenshots. Hence, you are well aware of this product's graphical intensity, which is – in our opinion – simply unrivaled in the world of next-gen console gaming. And in an interview with Naughty Dog lead programmer Pal England, we learn that the team has managed to push the PlayStation 3 and its uber-capable Cell processor to new heights. As noted by Examiner.com , the interview's juiciest segments include some very hefty numbers. Said England:
"Our characters they typically have eighty thousand polygons in you know, one character, like the main character. In total- what we try to push through to the graphics chip at one point two million triangles that we try to draw every frame. We do a lot using the cell processor."
That's…uh…a lot of triangles. And a lot of polygons. It's not easy to get a game to look this good and you can bet that Naughty Dog has once again set the visual bar for other developers to leap over, if they've got the guts to try. In addition, we've also heard that if the team does decide to work on a third installment – and we can't imagine why they wouldn't – they've said they can make everything look even better . That's downright amazing from where we're standing but we've learned to have plenty of faith in these guys.

Wow, its a good thing these guys took geometry huh?
And maybe art class.
Yes!
Lol! To say the least! Maybe some watercolor prowess…

Honestly that is pretty impressive but I think in terms of graphics… GT5 and team should take the cake. Sure their "Just" cars but I think the amount of work they put into each car is amazing. The cars look so real I think I would buy the game JUST to look at a car in the game. Remember back in the day when GT 1 and all those other goodies came out n' we were all like "Wooooww look at how nice those graphics are… omg can you guys hear the sound of the car? Sound soooo realll woowww" n' now we have something like Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain or GT5… Would you have imagined anything like this back then? Kudos to all the devs that put their heart into it!
I remember reading something like this in the review for U2 in PSOM. But I think they said 60,000 or something, but nonetheless, this is groundbreaking!
That being said, I wonder how many polys are in other games for individual characters? I mean, how far ahead is ND with this masterpiece compared to others beasts in the industry?
texture and lighting is ten times better on the ps3 than that other console.
MGS4 had me going "s***, this thing's freaking real…" The characters in this game look amazing
Tooooo Muchhhh Hypppeee! *head explodes*
Impressive stuff. Now, when do we get nurbs?
Nurbs? Probably next generation! The nVidia GT295's should do those without to much sweat… that GPU has 480 cores. x3 GT295's can be tri-sli'd together if need be…
I also read nVidia will release a new version of their motherboard which permits x4 sli if need be…
Q!

LMAO!
ive got 1 nvidia 9800GTX+ and that does everything i want it to why cards above that exist is beyond me.
until games like RAGE and crysis 2 come out were not going to need them, and by then the GTX 295 will be childsplay.
wasnt Kratos gonna use 20000 polygons, so this game uses more?
he had 20,000 in GoW2. i believe hes suppossedly gonna have about the same in GoW3, betwen 75,000 and 80,000 is a rough estimate i have heard
Kratos was only around 5000 polys in GoW2. They said he would be about 4x the amount in GoW3, so 20000 is about right. But as Alienange said below hes a much smaller character on screen so he doesnt need as many.
Best Game ever Made!
aaaww c'mon dude…Ryu ga Gotoku 3 not that fun for you these days?
Naa jk…THEY BOTH RULE.
Naughty Dog – setting the bar – one game at a time.
They're setting the bar… one bar at a time.
That's more like it ^_^
Only on Playstation.

I've read the same thing about god of war III.

Preaching to the choir.
it only does 80,000 polygons,
cheers!
i hope GoW can outperform it
LOL You promised no further comment.
Kratos won't need this many polygons as he's considerably smaller on screen character.
Very impressive but not too surprising seeing as is Naughty Dog after all. This will remain one of the best looking games on the PS3(or 360) for some time. That's counting the fact that the people at Square Enix said they were pushing the PS3 to it's limit;but I'm pretty sure that was a big gigantic lie.
Holy cow I still need to improve my skills on Maya 7.
Wonder what version they have now?
Maya 2010 has been released which is 11.0. You need to upgrade from 7. They let you make cloth and particle effects now starting from version 8.5.
Sometimes I feel bad for NPC's, they always get the lowest poly count 🙂
I agree. But technically Elena is an NPC and she's pretty full of polygonal hotness. Wait…that sounded less pathetically geeky in my head…
i think Naughty Dog should make a new crash bandicoot game…those were awesome
I used to love Crash! I remember the first time I played it and freaked out when I got to take a fork in the path. And setting it up like you were running into the screen was awesome. But it certainly doesn't compare to Ratchet and Clank to me…
Maybe they _should_ (matter of opinion), but they _can't_, since neither ND nor Sony owns the rights. Hence the inferior Crash games of late.
Sentence fragments FTW.
Imagine the poly count on Crash if Naughty Dog did manage to make it…
But yes, I miss beautiful/cartoony games like Crash. Thank god for Ratchet and Clank
But Crash was special, those levels were just memorable! And the story was nicely connected, really a heck load of fun all around!
Imagine 100 levels in a ps3 Crash game, IMAGINE THAT! Naughty Dog is the only company I know that can actually pull it off!
crash>ratchet and clank
These are the 2 things i want directly from Naughty Dog:
1. New Jak and Daxter
2. New Crash Bandicoot
Wonder if the 360 can do that? o.0
Just curious 😀
Very Impressive a big jump from the 1st game, can't wait till tuesday my copy is paid off and ready to be picked up!!!

Check that vid above…. 🙂
haha perry, that video is pretty awesome
It Only Does w00t!
I'm thinking of sticking hundreds of sheets of paper together and drawing 2 million tiny triangles until they represent Nathan Drake from 50 metres away.
How long do you reckon this will take? AND how long did it take Naughty Dog to do it?
How many polygons for the multiplayer characters? That's what I want to know. See you all there.
Uncharted 2 "It only does everything"!
makes me wish my ps3 didnt just ylod 🙁
