Gran Turismo has always reset the bar when it comes to sparkling visuals in any given generation, and series creator Kazunori Yamauchi insures us Polyphony will do it again with the fifth entry.
According to a recent NowGamer interview , Yamauchi claims that GT5 doesn't just look great…it actually looks "better than reality." We've already seen just how amazing video game graphics can be after playing through the masterpiece that is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , but there are always bigger and better things just around the corner in this industry, right? Said Yamauchi:
"'Better than reality' – yeah, that's one way of putting it. In a way, it's kind of a given that it's going to look better than reality. The thing about reality is that the criteria for looking "real" are actually a lot stricter and volatile than you'd expect. The way the sun shines, reflects off something, the way it lights scenery – we seldom have the opportunity to see what we consider "reality" under the best and most aesthetically pleasing conditions."
Yamauchi goes on to say there's a distinct difference between "best conditions" in a video game and reality; he gives us the example of the sun shining down at a perfect angle when the race is on television, but you can recreate that all you want in the game. It's an interesting way to look at it, really. But all we really care about is that entirely overhauled physics engine and the overall intricacy and depth of GT5. …well, we do care about the visuals, but we already know they're going to be sparkling and pretty. Yamauchi and Co. will certainly impress us.
Related Game(s): Gran Turismo 5
And Yamauchi defies God.
I love it
i totally understand what he is saying
polyphony knows what they're doing. my prediction is that they will wait until forza 3 comes out and then more details will come out one by one, leaving all of us excited and the making the people who bought forza 3 envious.
remember when they went to turn10 to 'test' forza 3? i think they already know what forza 3's all about and they have all that time to top it all off. they're just being humble.
forza 3 will fail judging by the developer's actions.
Considering some of the reviews that Forza3 is getting, I hope that Yamauchi is more than correct. GT-PSP is already sitting with reviews that are on balance saying it's less good than MotorStorm Arctic Ridge.
Given the praise that is being lavished upon Forza 3 right now, I fear that there may be a no-win scenario for Polyphony on this one.
a psp GT is no indication of GT5 will be like
GT5P on the other hand is, but even that is just a preview.
GT5 will do fine, people are just bitter 'bout the release date.
I don't know High, even with all the praise these idiots keep comparing it to GT5P as you know. Some of them even come down on the side of GT5P. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. Forza 3 still not as good in some ways to a years old demo? I think GT5 will do just fine. 😉
Yeah, I nearly ordered Forza an'all. But Fifa and Uncharted will keep me busy 'till GT5.
Still. I'm still trying to work out what to by form my lonely 360. There is only so many times I can play Mass Effect.
Too be honest Jawknee there were some aspects of Forza 2 I preferred. For instance, once I changed the controls to GT style, I found it more forgiving, also the AI was less train track like. But I did take off the damage setting; takes the fun out of playing too much.

@ Jawk
That is so true. I guess people forget what can be done in a two year span…
Uncharted 2007
2years pass
Uncharted 2 2009
Things only get better and sometimes Amazingly better.
"It looks better than reality"
Fantastic, doesn't help us if the game never gets released. I'm starting to not care anymore
I wish they would just come out with the damn game already. I am just about ready to buy Forza to get my racer fix. And go on and thumb me down all you want, all I am saying is that Forza is out soon and I really want to race some cars man.

GT PSP??
Don't own a PSP. I have been playing Prologue now for so long that I need some kind of real customization and some real diversity in cars.
Ooooh you are missing out. FF: Crisis Core and FF: Dissidia are great.
Oh not to worry I borrowed my buddies PSP specifically for FF:CC and yes that game was the jam. Haven't played Dissedia or whatnot and since I moved 200 miles away I don't really borrow his PSP anymore. I was thinking about getting one soon but I dunno? Are they really worth it or is picking up about 4 or 5 PS3 or 360 games a better idea?
Then go buy Forza 3, it loks great ^_^
But please stop writing those kinds of comments all the time 😉
What kinds of posts? And all the time? If you look at my post history you can hardly claim that I write any particular "kind" of post all the time just when it comes to this particular game I have but one thing to say, and that is "come out already if you can release it 'anytime you want'"
Ummm I think a PSP-3000 is probably worth it. the Go not so much. I didn't really use it at 1st but now I have quite a few games for it. My favorite are FF:CC and FF: Dissidia. God of War Chains of Olympus is good and with all the PS1 Classics coming out it's a great way to play old PS1 games. I have FFVII, MGS and Twisted Metal 2 saved on my memory stick and will add more as they come. I paid full price for my launch PSP-1000 and it's still going strong. I haven't put it down since I bought GoW and Dissidia for it. I think $169 isn't too bad. It's nice to have around when you feel like lying around and playing games or playing games on the go. Plus with FF:XIII Agito coming out for it, it will be a good thing to own a PSP.
oh yea, I forgot one importent game. MGS: Peace Walker.
@Banky
I found nothing wrong with his post. 🙂 let the man speak his mind.

Jawknee damn….You make a good point with an impressive list of games there man. Maybe I will pick one up soon then. I had no idea you could actually play the PS1 games on it. Do I have to buy them again or can I transfer them from the PS3 to the PSP, and can I carry over my save data? I don't want to have to go through the last 40 hours of FFVII or 25 hours of FFT again.
No you will not have to buy them again. You just take the PSP, plug it into your PS3 via USB cable. The PSP's memory stick should show up your PS3 XMB menu. The you sign into your PSN account on your PS3. Go to your PS1 game in the XMB, hit triangle and select copy. It will copy the game to your PSP from your PS3. Or you can sign into your PSN account through the PSP and download it again directly to you PSP. that takes longer though.
As for the save data, I'm am unsure. I havent tried to transfer it. I'm sure there's a way but I don't know how. I've been playing FFVII on my PSP since it was up on the PSN. I haven't had a reason to try and transfer it.
The posts I've seen from you regarding GT5 are like:
– Damn I'm buying Forza because GT isn't coming out
-Just want them to release the game already, God
We all know it sucks waiting for a new GT but what can we do. I see similiar comments every day. I have no life when I'm on GTPlanet.
Just buy Forza 3, it's a great game 😉
And then get hyped for GT again at March. It's all good.
Please don't reply. I know I'm going to lose this debate (if it ever was) so I' m not going to respond back haha ^_^

Well, I can't say I condone anyone buying Forza3 if I'm brutally frank about it. Yes, it looks a great step forward for the series and everything but do we REALLY want to reward the kind of behaviour shown by T10, Greenawalt and MS?
I count myself as a fan of both Forza and GT(despite their differences)as series and would have preordered F3 as a matter of course had they not behaved in the most arrogant manner I've ever witnessed from people within gaming. I don't want to pay these idiots with my hard earned cash as some things are more important than me getting to play a great new game-and this is one of them. They claim the "definitive" sim, and today "the ONLY sim this gen" they tell us how PD "dropped the ball" and all the while make us westerners look tools as PD keep a respectful silence over the badmouthing.
To me, if we buy the game we endorse the behaviour and as a parent I can't do that-I just can't and if I knew these guys personally I'd have had to have a serious word as they show themselves and the west up with their low acts. I held off getting a PS3 at launch though I REALLY wanted one cos Sony were arrogant(though some was garbled translation, imo)and, when Sony chjanged tack from the "2 jobs" VS I felt it was OK and they'd learned a lesson but there's no sign of that from the poll rigging, forum trolling F3 team of PR nightmares, is there?
Honestly, if this is the new state of gaming PR then it's sad and you can count me out. Gamers used to have a respect for each other but that will lessen very soon if those who really should know better(and badmouthing the people(PD) who're totally responsible for your games genre even existing is beyond cheek and into plain rudeness for me.
So, buy it if you want. It's your money, your inexorable right and I'm sure the game, tough far from being the "only one this gen" or "definitive"(how can a current gen racing sim with no weather be definitive anyway-or no day/night cycle how does that shape up for realistic 24 hour races?Or the weather for tyre choices?)will be a great racer. However, just remember what you're supporting with the cash from your purchase if you do-to some it seems you're approving and supporting some pretty poor examples of the gaming industry and I, for one, won't be getting F3(unless T10, at least, change their ways quickly)any time soon. No matter how much I'd love to play it(and I DO WANT to play it!)I can't sanction it against my better judgement this time.
I don't expect anyone to listen or change their ways just because I make a stand over this but, on occasion , you must do what you feel is right. Even if it means you lose out on playing a game you looked forward to for a couple of years or a game that looks as good as F3 does!
Anyhow, if you buy it really enjoy it but don't then feel you have the right to complain if T10's lead gets followed by every dev out there. Do you really want more douches in the industry showing poor examples to young minds and old gamers alike?More gaming douches? Count me out.
@cove. Just checked. You can copy and convert your ps1 save data onto your psp using your ps3. Transfer of save data is possible.
I know this is a day late and probably won't be read by anyone, but mastiff, you probably made the most compelling argument against buying F3 I have ever heard in my life. I for one do not want to see more poll rigging by the giving away of in game items, the arrogance towards a company that made it possible for a genre to basically exist at all, and the general attitude that they seem to have. You are correct in the way that buying their game would be condoning that type of behaviour and I do not want to do that. I guess I can just revert back to GT4 for a while and continue to play Demon's Souls. At the rate that game is going I will be plenty busy until GT5 comes out anyway.
There you have it sir, you're well thought out and vocalised opinion has swayed my own opinion in regards to a companies over all attitude and underhanded action.
you cant go by a portable gt on how the new one is gonna be just look how good gt 5 prolouge is the real one will be much better than prolouge and forza. it already blows forza 3's graphics out the water and when gt5 comes out it will bring new fame to simiulation racing
Another great reason to own a PS3. Blue Ray was the best move Sony could have made. No doubt the massive storage space contributed to the detail in the visuals.
i saw some video today on gt5 that blew my fuggin mind.
on a side note: why am i getting so many pop ups on this site all f a sudden?
it never used to do that!
Well at least they don't re-direct you to an advertisement page like IGN.com and Gamespot.com do
It's just a little bar up there.
Firefox + Ad Block Plus = Win
Ooooooooh!
arigatou-ne!
I have no doubt that GT5 will be awesome. Even though I own an Xbox 360 and PS3 I'm willing to wait for GT5 because I'm confident it will be way better than forza 3.
Game of the year for 2010, no doubt.
Don't know where they got them, didn't think anything had been released as far as a beta or demo.
Gamespot has screens from GT5 and they look out of this world good

Speaking of reality, it would probably be faster to save up your money and buy your own race car, rather than waiting for this game to come out.
Lulz. That was for them wasn't it.
I have to agree though I have been waiting for a while and wish it would hurry itself up already.
What form of time frame do you live in? What kinda job do you have to save up for a race car around 2010? Please, let me in on that job!
GT5 will come out faster than fulfilling that dream.
LOL, exactly.
All GT games have always looked amazing. I am not the slightest bit worried about Forza 3. It's been a horrific game from the start. And just adding the statement "Polyphony dropped the ball on this one and we picked it up" Uh… sorry to say but that ball is somewhat super-glued to Polyphony's hands. You couldn't get it off even if they tried to themselves. It's just… nature. Cry me a river, Forza sucks.
While I will be the first to admit that I hated Forza 1 and 2 with a burning passion, I will have to go on record as also stating that Forza 3 "looks" good. It "looks" like a clean polished simulator and I will be coming out some 157 days or so before GT5. I have no idea if this entry will play as poorly as the previous two.
I want GT5, but I have been seriously wanting a simulation racer for longer than I can tell you. I do not like arcade racers in the slightest, so none of these NFS games really do it for me. And, unfortunately there are more than just a few people in my boat.
With Forza 3 coming out much earlier I firmly believe that I lot of people will opt for that one simply because that is the way human nature has become. We as a whole want it now now now. I'm generalizing not speaking for the individual here. I will probably wait for some reviews on Forza 3 before I decide yay or nay to it and even if I do wind up getting it I will still get GT5 simply because I have never been disappointed.
But, let us never underestimate the power of getting to market well before the competition. Look at the entire "console wars" this generation to see the effects of a healthy start even when the first to market is utter crap out of the factory.
Am I the only one who thinks FM3 looks like a upraded GT4?
And has anyone seen the car list? It has some good cars don't get me wrong but the thing that I love about the GT series is how it has different specs and variations of vehicles where as Forza has mostly the high end models and specs.
Forza 3 is upgraded and slightly polished FM2, saying GT4 is exagerrating it.
And yeah the developers say they just wanted the cars that "people want to drive".
But some people might not see the car they own.
Yep.
I've been talking to my friends for years about this.
Games do look better than real life. Because we live in a dirty world but video games are so shiny, with HD textures 😉
We see "real" everyday, so some times it gets boring, until you see new places.
Mirror's Edge & Midgar's prerendered backgrounds being a perfect example.
Jugging by the sick reviews that Forza 3 is getting and IGN calling it "the best racing game of this generation",I'd say that the guys at Polyphony have to give their very best efforts for GT5(which they probably will).
Not really
Who is IGN anyway?
Rather, I point the finger to GT5P selling over 4 million copies.
Many have tried to 1up GT, all have failed
Need For Speed has always tried this, even back in the ps1 days. It always fell flat on its face.
No one could touch GT in the ps2 era either, Burnout for a bit, but GT3 outdid any Burnout game, flat out.
Gran Turismo fans are smart and logical. They know that while Forza, Need For Speed, and Grid all have the same feel, GT is a different, more realistic, and more ambitious franchise.
To be fair, IGN tends to lean towards Xbox games anyway. I used to love IGN but their bias is too obvious at this point.
I don't think NFS ever tried to compete against GT. I remember there very first one ("Road & Track Presents") I do believe came out before the PS1 came out. That and the sequel were very much like a sim for those days. I think the rest that followed went more in the "arcade-like" direction. Burnout has always been an arcade race.
My point being is that they are separate genres. One can argue they prefer sims over arcade racers. But I prefer both type. Although I never liked the NFSs released this decade.
The only games I know of that I would compare with GT are the Forzas, the GTRs and maybe Ferrari Challenge.

I've never seen much of a pro-Xbox slant on IGN. GameSpot, on the other hand, is very much pro-Xbox. Their "review" of Tools of Destruction was the final nail in their coffin. Now if I visit that site it's just to get a good laugh, or to make sure I can still stand a good rise in blood pressure.
when this finally comes out it will dethrone Burnout Paradise as my favorite racing game ever.
I don't have a 360 anymore, but if I did, I would probably pick Forza 3 up. I know it won't be Gran Turismo, but it will be a good game regardless.
But I do agree, waiting for GT5 sure sucks.
