New IPs are rarely big system sellers; despite the critical acclaim and relative gamer popularity, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune didn't really cause PlayStation 3 sales to surge.
However, we are now in a very different situation: the PS3 is down to $299, Blu-Ray has solidified its position as the accepted high-def video format, and the software library is a good deal larger. On top of which, people are now aware of the name "Uncharted," and advertising and promotion has been fairly heavy. In response to this, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes this is the game Sony has been waiting for; he said as much during a recent Bonus Round interview over at GameTrailers :
"I think it’s the game Sony always wanted and I think it’s been a long time since we’ve seen a 'Game of the Year' kind of game come out of Sony. So I think it matters and it’s got hardcore appeal…it’s a game changer for them, its coming out in a nice little window in October and it’s coming out right on the heels of the price cut. I think it keeps them ahead of Microsoft for a bit."
While some of you may be quick to point out Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots as last year's definite Game of the Year, we think Pachter was referring to first-party titles. Anyway, we have to agree with his assessment and provided Sony can continue to push the marketing campaign forward throughout the holiday season, Uncharted 2 could indeed have a significant impact on PS3 sales. Pachter believes it's capable of pushing "a couple of hundred thousand incremental boxes," and we're fairly certain that Sony would be happy with that result.

Wrong site to try and start a fanboi war. Posters here tend to be a bit more mature than that and a healthy chunk of us own an Xbox as well as a PS3 so there isn't the 'My system is the best!' mentality. Whatever game is good we play. Nice attempted troll though.

I am a very frequent reader of stories and comments on this site, but this is my first post. I love this site because it is relatively free of fanboy statements, but cazzy07 is obviously a fanboy. Anyone who would say a game that is so highly rated is overrated before they could have possibly played it or read any honest user reviews could be nothing but. That is what is wrong with the gaming industry, is the fanboy statements on every site, it is why I don't post. Look at IGN, Uncharted 2 already has a user score of about 9 and none of them could possibly have played it, hundreds of perfect 10s and even a bunch of zeros. It's sad. Back on topic, I am going to play this game and I am sure I will love it. It looks amazing!
I have to disagree with you, Uncharted 2 is definitely not overrated. I guess that 21/20 can be called "over rated", right? But after playing the first game and loved it, i have no doubt in my mind that naughty dog is gonna deliver. But as always anyone is entitled to their own opinion but all i can say is that if you have this mindset whether fanboy or not, you will miss a lot of the amazing games coming out of this generation. As i said, it depends on the person's preference. However blatantly judging a game which has not come out yet which has the complete opposite mainstream view than you is just ignorant. I can tell you that i played halo 3 and wasnt impressed at all, this is my opinion. But i wont go overboard to say that its a piece of crap, just to say it or bash a game. although halo was fun at times. As i implied, i wont label you as a fanboy or not but i would ask, no matter how impossible for you, to just cut the crap. This is not necessary in our community, psxextreme or any other place.

So Metacritic has it at a very high 97, which is unbelievable. I expected nothing less but man that's just an amazing score! Indeed it is obvious, they need to advertise the hell out of Uncharted2! I still think Killzone2 is amazing but either way, c'mon next tuesday!

I think Uncharted is like the Gears of War for Sony fans. It's a bit more grown up but still has that great TPS style.

I really am not looking forward to brutal legend, the graphics look very held back, gameplay looks weak, and it simply looks to me like its ridding off of big names and heavy metal fantasies.

Theres a very important factor when comparing videogame sales before compared to now and its already addressed in the article. The ps3 price is now lower compared to when R2 and Killzone 2 came out. Believe me, 100 dollar price drop made a big difference, just look back to when the slim came out and the ps3 hardware sales then. It means that there are more people that have the opportunity to buy Uncharted 2. The price of the ps3 is a big hurdle to overcome by sony and its already done.
As for guitar hero vs killzone 2, guitar hero 5 is multiplatform and killzone isnt so its definitely going to sell more. Add the fact that most people just go with the trend and casual games will tend to sell a lot, look at the wii. I said its a trend because by now the wii is loosing steam and i know that i along with a lot of my friends dont even bother to play the wii anymore.
I dont know if its just because of the articles i read here on psxextreme but it seems all you post are negative. again, i dont know if its true because i only read articles that interest me. but to sum it up, with the ps3 having a lower price, the fanbase also grew. This means more possible consumers for naughty dogs masterpiece. Now if they can get halo type advertising then sony got it made and its not even one of their popular IPs.

That's true, but remember that the PS3 is selling much much better than when Killzone2 or Resistance 2 were released (due to price drop and slimo of course). Plus, U2 and the ps3 itself are getting much more publicity and advertising than before.
I share your skepticsim, but I think u2 could very well be a system seller.

Na…….Project Natal might change something but we'll see.
The Oracle doesn't exist so no one knows but everyone is assuming that MS will die.
Maybe not anytime soon, but eventually since the PS3 is better valued.
Except that Sony is beating M$ft to market with EyePet, which does everything Natal promises now with the current PSEye while M$ft won't get Natal out until next year. Furthermore, M$ft couldn't even get Natal to work with its current VisionLive (is that what it is called?); M$ft will want to sell you a $100 Natal camera next year.
It just goes to show you that even when developing the PSEye Sony was looking ahead and developing a pretty advanced piece of hardware before M$ft even thought of Natal.
Unfortunately, Sony hasn't been pushing the PSEye as the advanced piece of tech it is, until now with the EyePet (coming Nov. 17) and the upcoming Sphere controls.
Sony really needs to step it up and push some creative and unique uses for the PSEye, both internally and through third parties.
Sony really needs to get more games out for the PSEye and Sphere than it did with the Eye Toy.
Until now, all of Sony's internal PSEye support has been through The Eye of Judgment (a cool game) and some cool little PSN apps/games (Aquatopia, Mesmerize Distort and Trace, Operation Creature Feature, The Trials of Topoq, and Tori-Emaki) that let you interact with the game or app through hand movements and gestures.
As far as third-party support, some companies have done the basic, such as putting your picture in the game.
Groan.

I am very sorry to not share the "Microsoft will die after March" attitude but it really is deluded to think that a company as wealthy and powerful as Microsoft is going to falter at all. A lot of the readers here seem to be fairly balanced and there is an underlying disdain for Microsoft as well there should be given the companies colourful background, but they are a huge company with deep pockets and almost infinite financial ability due to their many faceted business model.
And, further would you really want to have a video game industry with only one true main player? That type of environment breeds laziness and decrease innovation to the point of stagnation. Just look at the OS market.
Again as much as I dislike the way the company does its business, they are an integral part of the industry which without we would suffer as gamers, and admittedly they have some interesting looking stuff coming out like Alan Wake, the new Splinter Cell, and Mass Effect 2.
And Pachter is sometimes ridiculous in his analytic statements but sometimes he has been dead on. I think he gets far more flack than he rightly deserves at times.
Just my two cents.

People who wish to cast doubt on Uncharted's greatness never fail to say "How did Killzone turn out??"
It turned out GREAT. It's a fun, fun game, there's always a LOT of people online and it's got relatively few problems. Not for nothing, but it's also a LOT better than Halo. It may not be more POPULAR, but it's certainly better.
Just the fact that there's no alien midgets makes Killzone better than Halo, LMAO.
But seriously, so what if the game doesn't sell 10 million? I currently own ZERO shares of Microsoft, Sony or Guerilla Games stock, so like I said…as long as I can find a game online, I'm good.
I agree, Killzone 2 is miles better than Halo 3 and I am glad. Being that said it still pisses me off when I bought all three map packs that STILL I can rarely find a game with any of the maps running, when I do though I love Southern Hill's with the nuke going off every 5 minutes!
