Sony’s Tretton: “We Can Play On A Worldwide Basis”

Ever since the price cut and emergence of the PS3 Slim, Sony has been rising fast. And it's always interesting to hear how SCEA boss Jack Tretton views the competitive landscape.

In a recent Forbes interview , Tretton is quick to mention the "skyrocketing sales" of Sony's flagship console, and he hopes the "It Only Does Everything" marketing campaign might cause retailers to place the PS3 in both the Blu-Ray and Digital Camera sections of their stores. As for the competition, when asked what he thought about Microsoft, Tretton said, "I love their money." Basically, he means they can be "more patient" and the company "is prepared to go at it from a very steep curve in terms of profitability." He considers Nintendo to be the polar opposite, in that they stick to what they're good at by delivering a "casual, youth-oriented entertainment experience that's very enjoyable after 20 years." And best of all, "they make money; they print money." So how does he view his own company?

"We see ourselves somewhere in the middle, we don't have unlimited money [like Microsoft], we cater to a more mass market audience [like Nintendo], and we are willing to take more risks than Nintendo is… We like to say that the environment where PlayStation wins is best for the industry, because we have a brand that can play on a worldwide basis, young and old, male and female, where our competition tends to be relegated to select regions or to select consumer audiences."

We've always thought Tretton is a guy who tells it like it is; there's very little in the way of needless prideful boasting or competition slamming. We have to agree completely with his analysis of the three major industry players here, and we assume most of you will, too. Lastly, with the PS3 finally making a strong and determined drive towards the top spot once again, the competition is stiffer than ever before.

Haha, wow, I even have a friggin PS Eye and forgot about it. Shows you how much I use it. 😉

All right then, it only does everything, but it only doesn't have a printer.

No it doesn't have a printer but if you have a networked printer it does have a section for connecting to said printer and setting it up to use with the PS3. It really does do just about everything except for swedish massage.

I'm Swedish, so I can just use the DS3 to rub my back with and I'm all set.

Maybe they could slap 4 tires on the PS3 and have car dealerships sell them!

So you're shopping for a digital camera and you find the PS3 sitting there with the PSEye, will you buy it?
I don't think so!!!

Placing it in the bluray section makes sense and will increase sales, but in the digital camera section its just nonsense.

I like this quote, why do you think games like Heavy Rain are coming to the scene?

I agree with Tretton and your article Ben, Sony is leading the way in terms of innovation. Maybe not sales, but as stated they are rising fast. All the "risks" they're taking will pay off, for every gamer trying to find something out of the ordinary. Which is what I tend to find with the Playstation brand, I believe Eyepet is just astounding. I mean the level of ingenuity and creativeness far exceeds anything I have seen from anyone else or will see.

Well, that Tretton is just a class act. Normally, when you hear a Microsoft rep make a comment, it's pretty blatant Sony bashing.

I've always noticed most retailers in my area put a PS3 out in display with most of their stand alone blue ray players.

MS unlimited money. Nothing lasts forever. No doubt MS is hemoraging money through their massive add campaigns, buy outs, bribes, slander and RROD repairs.

coverton341

You're right about nothing lasting forever but with a mountain of money built on decades of OS dominance they probably have a little more than a crap ton left to through around.

As much as I really do hate their money flaunting and strong-arming business model it has served them quite well in their ventures.

MS's deep pockets seem to work in Sony's favor. MS can afford to be careless, where Sony has to be diligent and work hard to maintain their position as leaders in the gaming industry.

"The competition is stiffer than ever before." – "That's what she said"

Sorry been watching too much of The Office.

Jack Tretton is one smart man, he always pulls through for Sony. I have respect for him after his opening statement at E3 "The worst kept secret".

Sony really cares about the customers.

Imagine a world with Microsoft being the market leader. Screwing the customers (unreliable console) and charging for services that the users already pay for (online). Or you have Nintendo, who make good games that Never push the envelope. Sony is the ideal of the three.

I don't know about you guys but the Ps2 era didn't disappoint me.

coverton341

I would have to agree on the whole with that wage.
Microsoft as a company seems to be more about making money anyway they can than dedicating any amount of time to customers. I mean they have outsourced all of their tech support to countries that they can pay ridiculously small wages to so that they can save on that all while screwing the consumer over.

Nintendo is a wonderful company that made wonderful games when I was a kid. I loved Mario in all the iterations, but as I have grown up and am damn near 30 all of those icons of old still seem like childhood relics instead of growing changing entities. I mean Mario and Link got graphical and dimensional make overs but they're still…kiddy, I guess. And with the rare exception of No More Heroes or the like they don't really reach out to the older "hardcore" gamer.

Sony does fit in there nicely in between the two others but that is why I suppose we need the two others as well. So that we have a point of reference of sorts.

They're leaders

Both Nintendo and Sony
Microsoft are only opportunists trying to dish out generic hardware.

Even with the original xbox being more powerful than the ps2, it was just a mere ps2 clone with nothing special behind it.

Though I do give it that it had online.

Oh thank you, what do we owe you for pealing back the veil of deception this man placed over our eyes. The whole time we thought Sony was a company he worked for and he was just doing his job in talking positively about what they have to offer to us the consumer. Never did we think this man was Sony himself!
