The PlayStation Network has made great strides over the past few years but there's one feature that many online aficionados continue to miss.
It seems that with every new firmware update, there comes along with it the rumor that Sony will finally be implementing cross-title voice chat. However, that rumor has always fallen through; some believed it'd arrive with the recent update 3.00, but once again, gamers everywhere were disappointed. Will we be disappointed again when firmware 3.10 drops next month? Because the rumor is back again ; only this time, it comes from a supposedly reliable VG247 source that says cross-title voice chat will be available "by the end of October." They won't reveal the source but they say it's legitimate and if it is, it'll make plenty of people very happy. It's not a make-or-break feature but it's always a benefit, and in all honesty, it probably should've been available well before now. Now, if I could only find a way to make my headset sync up with the PS3 Slim, I'd be all set…it doesn't seem to be working, so perhaps this feature won't matter to me.
Anyway, this could very well be another set-up for disappointment, but we're hoping this source is indeed telling the truth. Now's the time.
what does cross-title voice chat mean? =S
When your in one game you can talk to your friends whom is in another.
only with a celly
it sounds simple, but is it really hard to implement for Sony? I've seen this "want" come up so often that I would think it would have been implemented before most of the other firmware update features.
It means that people too lazy to use a telephone can talk crap to people regardless of which game they're using.
I hope so, that would be so cool. Mainly because my friends only play CoD4 and i am really sick of that game so i never really talk to them.
Basically, u could be playing one game and ur friend could be playing another game, and you'd be able to talk to one another w/o the need of both of you having to be playing the same game at the same time, here's hoping its true, would be quite useful for me
Nice that Sony will give us more options if in fact this rumor is legit. I'm totally fine without cross-title chat. I'm also fine with not being able to hear the players on the opposing team. I just want to talk to my friends/teammates.
Hope it happens I really don't care but a lot people like the feature this only leaves Sony with one complaining point…The Backward Compatibility
ummm… u forgot custom soundtracks, they can play music from the XMB, although they say its up to the game developers, it really doesn't have to be. Its not that hard to do.
I take a lot of importance in the music department of the games I find like customize the soundtrack kinda kills the atmosphere the developers wanted to give us….but again there's always games with terribad's music.
I think PS3 will get BC again once the PS2 is finally laid to rest.
I liked the way Killzone did it by letting you play your music during multiplayer only.
thump downs guy confront me or you are afraid of getting owned?
they could bring bc back and everyone would still find something to b**** about!
Life is about bi*****g!
Q!
"i am home"
Exactly
These rumors about cross-title voice chat have been around for a couple of years now,They pop up maybe once every 3 months or so.If I don't hear it from Sony than I don't hear anything.
Whichever way it goes, the PSN is the amazing network it is.
i bet after sony updates this people are going to find another thing to complain about psn
Personally, the only thing that is really useful about cross-game voice chat is that it gives xbots a reason to say that Live is better than PSN, if you can call that useful. I'm sure there are some people for whom it would be nice but I won't ever use it, if it actually shows up. Just keep my PSN free and reliable and I'm happy.
Love the two ps3s image!
This would be interesting, but something I wouldn't actually use.
I don't like to be bothered when I'm playing non-online games.
Anyway, it's JUST a rumor
i agree with xra they will find another thing to complain about…
it be awesome to have…i mean if u got friends lol
when it comes at least itll shut up those Livelovers
Amen…
Is this the feature all the Xbots brag about? The same feature highlander likens to a telephone? Lol
You are correct.
When I had a 360 and a Live account, I actually really liked having the private chat feature. I usually only play with one person at a time, so it worked really well.
It's the only thing I want on the PSN that Live has.
It's a rumor, so I am not even going to expect anything.

I don't even own a blue tooth head set and mic. So this feature won't serve a purpose for me. But at least those of you who want it may get it.
I got a cheap one, but I hardly use it. I don't usually need the rest of the world to hear me say "Sh*t!" then someone gives me a headshot from afar.

its good that ps3 have it cuz.. supposedly. xbox live is the best cuz they got this 1 feature.
i honestly think both psn and xbox live is great and are in equal terms offering different experiences. except.. i dont like the paying part.
@ maxpontiac – but if you're playing with one person at a time why not just use the in game voice chat and mute the other one or two that have a headset?
@ WorldEndsWithMe – Thanks for making me lol.
I hope that this is true I have been waiting for this feature and GT5 for ever! I am tired of my friends ringing my cell phone like crazy even though we can text eachother but I get tired of typing you know cause your voice is faster than typing lol

Pick up your phone, answer the call and put it on speaker.
@ TheHighlander – That only works if you live alone. Usually someone at my house wants to use the phone between my three hour online gaming sessions.
How am I supposed to coordinate an attack on MAG whilst I talk to my best buds who play SOCOM? Maybe a switch between ingame-chat and cross-chat? kewl.
well.. the ps3 has cross text chat, something the xbox doesnt have.
i hope the new cross chat is both voice and text put together.
i dont have a headset because i would probably get banned from PSN with all the swearing i do.
and having to put up with those f***ing lebs and there f***ing RMB blasting through their stereo.
i would tell them off and start a huge argument.
Seriously…that music blasting was SO ANNOYING before IW implemented a "mute" function in COD4. EVERY online game should be required to offer that option. Did they ever implement that in Motorstorm Pacific Rift?
not sure, havent played that since release day.
speculation of a rumor based on hear-say from someone that heard comfimation of the rumor
next article is the rumor of confirmation 😉

I hope is true but we all know is just a rumor soon to be another lie.
So now I can have conversations with my friends while we are focused on the game we are palying instead of each other? Wow, that sounds really…dumb. A converstion that consists of the sound of each other breathing occasionally broken with an expletive or an "I wish you could have seen what I just did" just doesn't seem that appealing.
Some gamers just play by themselves. Some want to play with friends. It seems that the former don't really understand the latter.
Without cross game chat, it is very hard to organize games with friends. Don't just think about talking while in game… think about the whole thing.
You start talking to your friend. You talk about what game to play. You both launch that game. You probably have to do some coordination to get connected to each other. And you probably have to continue to do coordination as things move on… to get into the same squad, for instance. Or get to the same place on the map.
@dragon
Some gamers play with themselves?
Newsflash!!
😉
I think you're underestimating the importance of this feature. If you have friends you're trying to play games with online (versus just playing with random people), it is currently nearly impossible to coordinate matters without resorting to some other medium such as a telephone.
The lack of cross game chat pretty much kills the whole point of even having a friends list.
I mean… if I have a friend that I would like to get together with online to play a particular game… how do I do that?
And how do we move on to the next game when we're tired of it?
I don't have a group of ppl I play regualrly with online, but I can see your point here. The chat feature would make it easier to coordinate game launching.
For that to work on PS3 you would be doing voice chat in the XMB with any friends that are online. I think I'd like that.
@ Skant
While I agree cross-game voice chat would make it easier, there are plenty of mechanisms to help coordinate game launching:
Home
PSN messages
Text chat rooms
Video chat rooms (I suppose)
The "current game" indicators on the friends list
I think you're overestimating the importance of this feature.

Learned my lesson in FW 3.00. I'll wait a week or so and observe the feedback from the community. Any freezing/idiotic problems that stems from this update, at least I still retain the original firmware till all problems are cleared…
I'll see. Hopefully EA are getting out of the way.
