Square-Enix has always provided us with something fresh and new concerning each new installment in the acclaimed Final Fantasy franchise. But this time, they're keeping one mystery aspect under wraps, perhaps until the game launches.
They still haven't revealed all the details about the game's combat and exploration and yet, at the recent Premiere Party, they announced FFXIII's Japanese release date (December 17). Therefore, they can't possibly wait much longer before divulging the latest and greatest…or can they? According to the Examiner.com citing the latest Famitsu issue, there's a secret menu selection that will remain hidden from the audience during its upcoming Tokyo Game Show demonstration. Why? Who knows? They do say it's "important" so maybe it has something to with the online aspects of the game, or perhaps it's related to the actual combat mechanic. If it significantly effects the gameplay, we kinda want to know about it but if it's just Square-Enix hype for something smaller than expected, we'll likely be disappointed. We have seen video of the game in action and there has been a demo in Japan for quite some time; presumably, this "hidden menu option" wasn't in that demo. Otherwise, what would be the point in hiding it from the Japanese public this week?
Anyway, we'll see if the info gets leaked at some point or if Square-Enix simply reveals what will be an inevitable discovery on the part of FF fans.

cool…very cool.
Please let it be an option to toggle ye olde worlde turn based combat on….
I like that idea 🙂
Ye olde' worlde'!
At first I was thinking that it was online multiplayer options. Then again, turning on turn based combat sounds likely, yet… not a very big deal.
No, it's a *very* big deal if SquEnix put old style turn based combat back into the game as an option. a lot of RPG fans, especially JRPG fans are not all that fond of the newer real time/action based combat systems. Personally, I find that the turn based combat has a completely different pace and feel, almost like a game of chess when fighting the larger enemies and Bosses. You have to use strategy and manage your team more carefully. Most real-time/action based combat systems are button mashing affairs with a little bit of tactics in how you configure your party, but the game is handling the characters you are not controlling, so it's a bit like having the game play itself.
Turn-based combat FTW!
That would be the biggest deal of all time! Are you on crack?
edit: lol, highlander, I just lectured a guy in the Versus article about all that chess and strategy stuff 🙂

Square enix obviously have a trick up their sleeve if they're hiding something like this from us.
Oh why does FF have to go to xbox aswell <sigh>
Nothing is sacred anymore unfortunately.
Please let it be an option to use English subtitles [preferably within the Japanese version =P]….
Or an option to have the Japanese audio in the PS3 International version….BluRay FTW!
English subtitles on the Japanese version of the game is all I want to hear
Yes and Yes. All this hype better be for something worthy (save anywhere anyone?)… I will have a great laugh if this "option" is nothing more than 'pause'.
They're hiding something important from fans two months before release at one of the biggest shows around? These guys are ridiculous.
A Versus XIII Demo Option exclusive to PS3
