The PS3's library continues to expand with every passing day, and the original titles and PS1 classics on the PlayStation Store add to the rising number. But what about the massive PS2 library…?
There have been rumors circulating ever since Sony pulled backwards compatibility for PS2 software out of the PS3, and now, a leaked document containing meeting notes between SCEA and Sega tells us PS2 games may return in a big way. The meeting was held back on August 5 and it featured Sega's comments on upcoming PS3 and PSP releases, as well as Sony's plans for their flagship console in the near future. What's most interesting is this: "SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN." They even go so far as to mention Grand Theft Auto: Vice City , which means it may not be much longer before you start seeing classic PS2 titles alongside the PS1 titles on the Store. They even talk about how Sony would market these games, with PS3 controllers shown in PS2 television ads. To drive up interest even further, it seems Sony and Sega might collaborate on another big project, and that would involve bringing Dreamcast games to the PS3. It appears that Sega needs to provide SCEA with a list of games that might be worthy re-release candidates, and Sony wants exclusivity, too.
There's no doubt that Sony has worked to position the PS3 as the ultimate home entertainment console and perhaps the only significant drawback of the new systems is the lack of PS2 b/c. This would help to alleviate that pain, and the inclusion of DC titles is a surprise. We'll have to keep a close eye on this; perhaps we'll hear more about it at Sony's TGS press conference in a few days.
Sounds like a great idea, I never bought a Dreamcast because I hated the controller. I would love to play Power Stone with a ps3 controller.
I actually had to sell my dreamcast because the controller was cramping up my hand to the point where I would wake up in the morning and my hand would be stuck in a certain position and it would take a few minutes before the cramp would subside. Never had that problem again after selling my dreamcast.
read lots of blogs on this and I hear some people complaining they want the B/C discs not this so we'll see if this is true in the next coming days hopefully.
I think Sony has to provide some form of software emulation if it wants to sell PS2 games on PSN, so I would assume Sony would allow you to play PS2 discs if you own them and sell the downloads to you if you don't.
Orvisman – And as Sony has said, that is NOT going to happen ("unless they can perfect it" is the possibly unsaid portion of that declaration). People who are saying Sony has an ulterior motive here simply so they can re-sell 're-compiled' PS2 games via PSN have little clue what they are talking about.
Yet, it is my understanding that you need some kind of B/C to be able to play PS1 games off PSN; so I am assuming you'll need the same thing to play PS2 games off PSN.
Furthermore, it would be bad PR if Sony had a solution for B/C that only allowed the end user to play PS2 games off PSN and not his/her own PS2 discs.
Wow if this manages to actually happen I can only imagine how my wallet will resent me in the coming months… im so sorry checking account T^T
Ooo sweet I would but many ps2 titles that I have missed like okami and shadow of collesus..bring this asap
Okami is a classic! One of the finest rpgs on the PS2.
I am definitely willing to wager this will come to fruition. They are almost bound to do this with the coming of the Holiday season.
I have a crap load of PS2 games already. I have no intention of filling up my HD and buying them again. If there's no PS2 disc BC, then they should let you download them for free by using some serial code from your old bought copies…….but that's a fat chance. Sony could easily do PS2 BC on the PS3, but they won't because there is a decent chance of making a few bucks by reselling their games to the Sony "juice" drinking fanboys. Why let people play their games for free why you can easily make a buck off of them again? Not as many people would buy and download Shadow Of The Colossus again if it were playable from their old PS2 disc. I hate purchasable DLC, full game or add-on.
yea, i have no intention of re-purchasing games i already own either… that was the draw to the b/c was we could re-play our favorite games on the PS3… selling them to me again is kind of a slap in the face… instead, i think i'll hook up my PS2 in the computer room to my SDTV because, PS2 games look very blurry in HD…
of course they're going to have b/c. they can't just give you ps2 games and only let the ps2 b/c ps3's play them. just because you downloaded them via psn doesn't mean they magically work, they have to have some type of software emulation unless they want to spent a crap load of money converting them to ps3 compatibility like they did with GoW
@ LegendaryWolfeh – Well yeah, but in the case of GoW Collection the "emulator" is built in. They could just keep doing that for each game and release them on PSN.
A real emulator that lets you play all your PS2 games on your PS3 would be MAJOR fan service by Sony. If they do it I promise to throw my 360 off my roof.

@LegendaryWolfeh – BC from a PS2 disc and BC from selling downloadable versions of PS2 games are 2 very different things for the PS3. If Sony decides to have both, then that's swell…….but that is not what this article is implying.
See wolf, I'm thinking that any emulator they are working in will only allow you to play digital copies of the PS2 or DC games. Just because the PS3 will be able to emulate DC software doesn't mean we can't pop in a DC format disc and play it.
What Ben doesn't report on is the March release date for the new motion controllers in Japan and the creation of an "Import Games" tab on PSN.
Now the latter tidbit and the news that Yakuza 3 is coming west might indicate Yakuza 3 might be the first import title coming to PSN in this new store.
that's awesome….
So that God of War collection really needs the bc Sony?
Dreamcast Games? I would take Shenmue 1-2.
Wouldn't we all? haha
Shenmue was awesome … would also, oddly enough, like to see Seaman again …
Voice recognition + Evolving Pokemon-like character + Leonard Nimoy = one odd and rewarding experience!
Yes my dream might finally come true!
The Original Yakuza with Japanese voices and English Subtitles for download on PSN!!!
Shenmue 1 and 2 will be Awesome!!!
Man ps3 has really overcome the xbox. I used to have 360 but sold it because the ps3 started doing everything. If they start this this will be way better than lives games on demand crap.
It did that since day one
not really
Wow ps2 and dreamcast games…very impressive
I was going to pick up a Dreamcast just to play Skies of Arcadia but I may hold off now.
You can borrow mine for a few weeks.
Ough, i'd love Shenmue 1&2, i miss them.
SKIES OF ARCADIA
yeah!
That old GameCube game? <snicker>
well they already did this for tekken 5
I was thinking the same cause it was so easy all the did was put it to 1060p 60frames per scend and online content
Never saw the hype for BC and don't understand the hype for downloading outdated games.I bought the PS3 to play PS3 games.Seems like I am the only one who wants to keep going forward.
For me it's not a necessity but it's nice to have the option. I don't want to have more then he current gen consoles connected to my TV. A PS3 and a Wii is enough. Don't want to have my Super Nintendo, Gamecube, PS2 and Dreamcast out there too I still play some of those old games. Nice to have a Playstation that can play all of the Playstation's titles spanning generations and a Nintendo console that allows me to play dated Nintendo titles. I don't see that as moving backwards. It actually an improvement in hardware that's made that possible. Seems to me that's moving forward. Given you avatar, I don't think you'll have any hesitation in playing God of War on PS3 right?
LOL DarthNemesis your not alone. I also want to move forward but it'd be nice to download some classics you might have missed or basically want to replay.
Now I have an urge to play Mega Man 2.
Look around on eBay. You might be able to find the Megaman collection for PS2. It has MeganMan 1 through 8. Unless your PS3 isn't B/C.
Oh I have the anniversary collection. I popped it in a little bit after that comment.
Nice. Love MegaMan 2. I've been tempted to buy it for the iPhone but I don't think I will.
So if you've played chess once, there's no need to ever play it again???
This sounds like a good is idea but I think many who want real backwards compatibilty are going to be irked by this. It's almost like Sony is saying, "you can continue using your outdated PS2 to play your PS2 games in crappy video quality or you can pay us again for the same game and play it on your PS3 in digital format".
But then again I can't say I wouldn't be tempted to buy a digital copy of FFX and XII.
Anyone know if the PSP's hardware is capable of PS2 emulation? How awesome would it be to be able to play FFX on your fancy PSP Go.
I bought several PS1 titles that I already own simply becuase I was lazy and the 5.99 mark didn't seem that bad. It's convenient not having to take out my old PS1 games and use their disks.
I equate it to owning a certain music cd but still burning a duplicate and using the duplicate so the original stays in perfect condition.
I'm sure the PS2 titles will be rather expensive so I doubt I will purchase any of them unless there is added content or the ability to play on my psp.
With PS1 titles I don't mind so much because those are compatable with the PSP. its nice being able to take FFVII, MGS etc with me on my PSP. If PS2 compatabilty with the PSP never becomes a reality I don't see any benefit in paying Sony again for a digital copy that out weighs the cost. I do agree it's less of a hassle not having to keep your PS2 library along side your other games, or having to take them out anything you want to play them, I just don't know if the cost is worth it. Especially since the PS2 games will cost more then that 5.99 to 9.99 price point. I think this can work if Sony does it right.
I like your analogy to the cd burning. I guess though since I stopped burning CDs and now just rip them onto my iPod it's a bit different since I don't have to keep buying CDR's or pay the record company for a digital copy.

Torrents FTW 🙂
Ahh yes. Good ol Torrents.
b/c was a no brainer. otherwise, sony would be leaving a ton of money on the table with ps2 games on the psn. especially now that more folks are buying ps3s many former ps2 users.
Die hard arcade
NICE!
