The first Modern Warfare smashed sales records everywhere and became the most popular online game of the generation. This is likely why Infinity Ward decided to make a sequel rather than a different Call of Duty entry, but don't expect fire to strike three times.
During a Videogamer interview with Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling, we learn that the studio isn't planning a third Modern Warfare title. In fact, they're really not sure what their next project will be, which poses plenty of questions. Thing is, back in June, Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford stirred up some ruckus by asking IW, "What else have you got? Can you give me something I haven't seen before?" He went on to say that it was "too big of a risk" for Infinity Ward to go beyond Call of Duty but Bowling was quick to say they would "eventually do something else." And to clarify that this upcoming sequel really is "something else," Bowling had this to say:
"When we feel like we can't innovate any further in the Call of Duty franchise, then we'll do something else. A lot of that mentality went into Modern Warfare 2. That's why it's Modern Warfare 2. It is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but you'll never see that in game. We never call it that. It's because we think of this as a new IP. This is our Modern Warfare 2 game. So we are constantly doing new stuff.
We're doing stuff in this game that you've never seen before, which is awesome. We're going to new locations in single player that you've never seen before. We innovate in our own way. But yeah, eventually we'll do something else, and it will be fun and it will be awesome and it will be fresh and it will be great."
Bowling than said he had "no clue" what their next game will be, but he did say he's going to take a three-month long nap. Well, that's probably well deserved after producing a title that Activision claims could end up being the best-selling video game of all time. And yeah, we would like to see IW do a little something different, now that they've proven themselves over and over again in the Call of Duty franchise.
this guys can't do anything new they are just gonna keep milking the call of duty franchise
thumb me down all you want cod fanboys but that's my opinion
Besides making excellent, top-notch games, what about IW makes you think they can't do anything but CoD?
That's just irrational.
i just think they're afraid to try anything new just because people may not like it and since 2003 they have only made cod games
Ben those "top notch" games are the same thing over and over. Nothing revolutionary, nothing remarkable about the storyline or presentation. It's comparable to the Madden Series. It's gained a huge following and regardless of it's content people will buy it simply due to it being the next installment in the series.
I don't care. We're talking about a few of the highest rated games in history.
I am NOT a fan of the idea that a game can't be great unless it's somehow unique or innovative.
Oh really, seems that's one of your biggest complaints concerning Valve's games.
Any game that uses an auto aim can personally kiss my ass.
auto aim certainly has its place.
it worked perfectly for GTAIV and the godfather games.
O and crackdown, one of the most addictive games out.
You're referring to 3rd person shooters which have to make up for their lack of precision controls in regards to shooting.
The main gameplay aspect of a FPS is the shooting, thus any trace of auto aim is pathetic.

No, my primary complaint with Valve is that they refuse to advance (currently) and their games were never anywhere near as innovative as people wish to believe.
Speaking of hypocritical, I find it downright hysterical that you continue to blindly push the superiority of PCs when there hasn't been a single solitary innovative or unique title on it in the past decade.
Guess we don't really need anything new, huh?

they should come up with new stuff. but at the moment, i have only noticed one game of theirs, cod4, so im not bored of them. yes, after this they should make something new.
Ben when have I ever "blindly pushed" the superiority of PCs. I simply prefer the controls in regards to RTS and FPS. I enjoy not having assistance when it comes to playing my games, auto aim anyone?
Innovative PC games:
Half Life2
Portal
Spore
Black and White
That's a truly sad list, especially when you have to go back so many years to encompass it.
The list of console innovation would stretch into the hundreds, and that's exactly the point.
Ben list me some innovative RTS and FPS on consoles please.
This conversation is in regards to FPS. If it isn't a RTS or FPS I play it on a console and I'm not denying there have been far more innovative console games than PC games except when it comes to FPS and RTS.
Its sad when innovation is the only measuring stick. C'mon, Vertigo, MW2 is gonna be killer. I'd think if anyone were to be a success after coming out of their confines, it would definitely be Infinity.
Not just anyone can make a quality game. Seriously, if that were the case we would be inundated with releases of 9.5, which MW2 will be at worst. I think it is a good sign they want to try something new. Mw2 is by no means stagnate so stop kidding yourself Vertigo.

Wage I don't really care about innovation, I mean come on I still play Counter Srike and I've been doing so since the summer of 1999. I simply brought it up in hopes of dealing a low blow to Ben.
I do however think MW2 looks the exact same as its predecessors and since I've never enjoyed any of IW's games I see no reason to look forward to this game.
Again auto aim for a FPS is the equivalent of infinite lives in a platformer.
I've straight up gotta agree with that f*ing auto aim, DAMNIT! That pisses me off when someone passes the guy you had a headshot on and you end up latching on and missing completely.
Idk. I guess I feel its like FPS guy says to an RPG nut, hey whats with all the item management? Every RPG game is the same! Or a RPG guy says to a Driving simulator guy and says, all you do is race in circles!
Its all tastes, I guess. Lets just not hate our brethren gamers.

I agree with you in regards to the hating. If people want to enjoy some MW2 then so be it but I'm not going to be quiet about my distaste for it. I'm simply offering my own take on things and maybe a few people may agree or take note on a few things I mention on the matter.
Ben hates me..
Seems all people seem to do is hate on what are going to be great games. So what do you people play? Total confusion here.
Currently playing:
PS3:
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Crystal Defenders
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
PSP:
Brave Story
PC:
STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl
So ya I'm currently playing other "great" games. Just becuase I dislike a specific game franchise doesn't mean I only play bargain bin games. Stop being an idiot.
Thank god! i personally hate CoD so i am glad that IW isn't making any more. But i do love Infinity Ward so i am looking forward to there next game.
how can you hate cod and love IW if they have only made cod games ?
Sorry i don't love Infinity Ward, but i want to see them as a developer and not just a CoD maker. I will look forward to what they make next.
If Bobby "Activision" Kotick has any say in it, it will be Modern Warfare 3. Not that that is a bad thing. Still…
IW will do what makes money… and eventually, as we have seen in the past for some studios… some of the truly creative guys will get frustrated and decide to leave and set up their own gaming firm in a bid to "win over their freedom"… to experiment and to make "independent" game I.P.s.
What is stopping them maybe? Bad economy – most of the IW employees know where their bread is buttered, including their nice bonuses for finishing MW2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 on time. They get free music via the Rock Band series… all in-house, while they work – yippee…
…and so the cookie crumbles… when you are bored with what you do find something to either change direction (and risk derailing your life) or fly the like the wind because you have a real genius inside you…
Q!
"i am home"
cod is the best and if you hate it you are a hardcore idiot

what if you just don't care for it one way or another?
Let me guess the next IW game gonna be a FPS.
and a bunch of sheep's are going to buy it day one hurting the videogame industry more.
a bunch of sheep who brought the first cod4 which got fantastic reviews then huh and the send is likely to be great aswell…..
and that's what hurts the industry I remember one day when I was on wal mart one dude asked me one good game to buy for his wii…I'd say to try No More Heroes or Okami in the end he just was like…meh and took CoD4 LOL..
also reviews mean anything Halo ODSt its getting a lot of 9…yeah and only has a 3-5 hours campaign.

Godslim, stop trying to convince everyone of CoD's greatness. It had it's time. Most of us are over it and have a want or something fresh. This gen is over saturated with FPS and were sick of it. Fine, IW make your sequel. But please do something new for your next project.
its not had its time not until mw2 is out….cod4 is still the number fps out….if guys on here didnt h8 on it so much i wouldnt have to tell u all its good…its just because your all not fps fans me i luv loads of different types of games from final fantasy to mgs but u must be blind to not see that cod4 was one of gameings great marvels
want me to admit CoD4 its a good game its all you want?? OKAY! I played the damn game and the others IW ones I wasnt surprised I would give the franchise a 8.0 only cuz its good and for the graphs… but a masterpiece? NO … damn dude you really dont get the message .

godslim are you drunk or currently skydiving out of an airplane?
drunk…..
Hittin the ole cough medicine a little early these days I see.
I have a hunch that their next project will be ………. Modern Warfare 3!! If they will be selling more than the Modern Warfare 1, there's no reason to take the risk and make a new IP and easily lose half their sales.
to me honestly i dont like any COD game i played 3 n modern warfare 1 and i did not like the campaign for nothing it was too dull but killzone 2 has a kickass storyline and excellent gameplay and its a graphical powerhorse…..n modern warfare 2 is just a slightly urgraded version of the first one just look at COD WAW suks balls except that killing nazi zombies ordeal kewl but i could play wolfenstien if i want to shoot some nazis
Killzone 2 and Metallica FTW!!!
Have you played Cod4?
yes i have and it is a really good game not better than KZ2 and i think cod mw2 will be cod 4 with a little better graphics and a little extra stuff
It seems to be the trend to batter anyone who's involved in the CoD franchise, esp with the bad press activision's Bobby has brought upon it. But he's a money man and has probably never played CoD, he most certainly didn't make the game and it seems he has disdain for anyone who works for him.
Lets give merit to the guys and gals who put all the long hours into creating the games. You don't have to be into fps's or the CoD games to appreciate that they do turn out a decent looking product built to entertain.
Can't hate the guys for wanting to make money from it, bills gotta be paid and the kids must eat. But when the finished product does come out, I personally get the vibe that for the people behind the scenes, Bobby being the exception, it's a labour of love.
I'm not a CoD fanboy, I do enjoy the games but I generally enjoy fps's anyway, CoD games are good for killin a few hours and thats cool. It wasn't so long ago when it was cool to say you where looking forward to MW2, only since that twit starting mouthing off that it became cool to slate the franchise…get over it and don't just jump on the band wagon because you don't want to look like you have an opinion of your own that wasn't influenced by the masses.
BRavo!!!
I would like for them to create a stealth/action game. They did a really good in the stealth mission from MW1, so why not create a something similar in third person view.
Oh and personally it really pisses me off when so many people talk sh!t about shooters and call of duty yet they go on a defend killzone 2. Seriously get over it this gen is about the shooters, if you want your RPGS go back to the ps2, while Sony is still selling it. I'm not saying RPGs suck I'm just saying that many people DO prefer shooter over RPGs.
And many prefer RPGs or platformers or a mixed variety over shooter after shooter, what makes you right?
I'll take an RPG over a shooter anyday.
i think we have more than enough RPGs out this year, previous times ok but this year is flooded with them.
while there may not be as many as FPS but theres still plenty.
deamon souls, fallout 3 GOTY, brutal ledgend, alpha protocol, borderlands.
yea that should be enough.
O dont forget FFXIII if your in japan.
I'll second Geobaldy.
And hang on a second Dashman, this generation LACKS RPGs [JRPGs anyway]. We're barely picking ground this very year.
maybe the next game they will make will be Future Warfare.
Whatever it is you can bet that it will be a FPS.
And didn't Bungie say the same thing about halo after they made 3?
Infinity Ward is very talented, it is a shame they will be taken to task again and again like a dirty hooker instead of doing something unique and top-notch as opposed to mainstream and status quo.

Being an extremely biased person I could care less about what they're making if it is anything close to a FPS. I wish MS would just buy them already.
