Square-Enix has a new game and we can honestly say it is multiplatform…and it also isn't multiplatform. No, really.
The game is Nier and it appears to be a fast-paced action/RPG of sorts. You can check out the official site for some baseline info and media, plus a kick-ass teaser trailer. Now, it appears the title is headed to both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but each platform will get two very different versions of the game. As summarized at Classy Gamer , there will be Nier Gesthalt for the 360 and Nier RepliCant for the PS3. You will head out to save your little sister, who suffers from a supposedly incurable sickness called, "Black Sentence Plague." As the main character – apparently named Nier Gestalt – progresses, he will learn more about this deadly illness and why demons continue to infest his world. Both of these games in question will release some time next year and both will be on display at this year's Tokyo Game Show at the end of the month. …but again, these are two different games, although we're a little light on the details as to how different they are. This could prove to be a bit of a development mystery for a little while; why would Square-Enix go out of their way to do this?
Well, whatever the reason, at least some iteration of Nier is headed to both consoles. We'll try to track down more info on this interesting game over the next few weeks.
Related Game(s): Nier RepliCant
Microsoft pay big $ for exclusivity, but SE want to keep sony fans happy; the only way both could be done is by having the same title (to an extent), while being completely different games in reality.
Just a thought.
It's sad how Microsoft's best effort are only timed-exclusives. Gamers saw through their scheme now they know they'll wait.
I wonder how different are these Neir games. I hope it's more than just a different title, like Ninja Gaiden Sigma.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma is not just "another" title. There have been significant improvements and additions.
I'm curious to hear more about these games. Might even end up picking up both versions if they look fun and are different enough.
OOOOhhh, I had to think about it a second. PS3 and 360 get two different versions of the same game and then a few months later they put up the full version of the other system's game up as DLC to make more money. Sneeeeeeeky.
Either that, or the PS3 version features more pretty young things and less blood and gore?
One can hope.
Isn't that exactly what's happening here? Replicant is made more along Estern style lines with androgynous chars while Gestalt is more western with He-men and girly girls.
More Eastern/Japanese for the PS heaby markey in Japan at a guess and the other way rounf to appeal to western 350 gam, ers. Dunno where that leaves wetern PS3 heads but there you go-I'm happy with the oddness of the decision anyway!

I'm with Highlander, but the ps3 makes everything look sexy.
@tes
That's because it's big, black and glossy….
Wait, did I just say that out loud?!
once you go black you dont go green lol
Because of one enevitable reason: Profit =P
Of course SE will in time switch both games to the opposing platform. Maybe.
Funny how we get the RepliCa though. Got to stop making these horrible puns =
exactly what i thought xD why do we get the replicant one
I'm sure this is a long shot. I mean, a looong shot, but maybe Squeenix has realized the potential of the PS3 while working on FFXIII for both consoles and wants to…no, wait…….. Nevermind. What a silly thought..
i'm hoping your right
was thinking the same. the reason behind two versions is se have realised that they can get more juice out of the ps3.
I don't think they realize they could get more juice out of the PS3. I think they realized by doing this, they could get more money out of the PS3/X360 fan base. But I like your optimistic thinking.
Well this is the same company that's making FFXIII for PS3 and 360 and FFXIII Vs. for PS3 exclusive. So I'm wondering if they just have too many people on hand and need to develop two games for each title.
yup, that Black Sentence Plague is a killer.
So it's a Near Replicant, eh? ;D lol
sounds like its going tobe a Pokemon Red/Blue situation, same game but maybe you run into different obtacles?
Square Enix is just stretching themselves way to far now. If they just did 1 or 2 games a year, we would have had FFXIII like a year ago…

Nier is not really developed by Square, though. It is being developed by Cavia.
i wouldnt mind square enix tanking. preferable if they tank after FFXIII vs. that way they have no choice but to do FF VII or VIII remakes.
By that same token, if they had kept XIII an exclusive like they originally promised, we'd also have had it a year ago.
Bet a copy of FF13VS that the 360 version is better…intentionally.
You forgot to mention that the Hot lady you see in that picture up there is also a hermaphrodite… Thats right… Us PS3 owners get Man/Lady action!
all wut they do and think is not to benefit gamers but to play tricks and making money. Fxxx the SE businessmen, period. I dont see any need to produce two version games under the same title other than being greedy. just like WorldEnds said above, couple month later, add in a download pack to suck more, or eventually produce a full version. This practice is spreading among today's game developers.

Hahaha, square enix is pulling a Soul calibur. The space for the dlc will be clearly seen and will be denied the hell out of it.
Hmmmmm…
They should've done this with Final Fantasy XIII.
Some of the screenshots from the website look intriguing as far as enemy design and art direction with the crumbling city-scape and whatnot, but it looks like the game has a long way to go development-wise by watching the trailer.
It needs work graphically, unless that's the style they're going for, which I find rather bland. And it needs something special to distinguish it from the other action titles coming out, i.e. GOW III and Dante's Inferno. Though being from Square-Enix, perhaps the difference will simply be the quality of the story.
Also, I didn't notice any info on the official site regarding the development of two separate games for the different platforms. Dunno, I'll keep an eye on it, but it hasn't hooked me yet.
Square has too much on their plate, they need to finish on game and then move on. Hope they are not over doing this.
S-E is a *publisher* as well as a developer. They're not even making this game. In fact, the only S-E-developed game that's been released so far this generation is The Last Remnant. Everything else was just published by them. FFXIII will be their second internally developed game to be released this generation.
I think this a somewhat good idea. It means fanboys can't use anything. Both got the game, but both get an exclusive, although guaranteed everyone will say theirs is better.
And as regards to S-E making too many games at once…They have acquired a number of developing studios in recent times, so maybe it isn't such a bold move. And it is not as if they havn't been doing this for years anyway, especially since the Squaresoft Enix merger.
Hmm, maybe secretly Square-Enix has been doing work for Sony?..I know sounds implausible but hear me out…
Square makes the appearance of supporting MS so that they can get their games onto the 360. All the MS fans buy the games. (just to spite the PS3 fans) Then Square starts releasing the better quality games on the now much cheaper PS3..the MS S-E fans decide to follow and start buying PS3's.
Okay sounds ridiculous I know. S-E is just in it for the money..but hey I thought I would throw it out there..
Sounds very uninteresting. It's like if EA decides to split Madden and make it different for every console. "Yea the Wii gets the Redskins"
"Umm 360.. you guys get Titans."
"And PS3.. you'lll get the Eagles."
Oh god, don't give them ideas, EA is so desperate to be different they might go for it.
I dont like this, its like how pokemon is on the ds. The same game, minor differences. I want a complete game. But this one would be worse, instead of getting both games, you also have to get 2 different systems. Arent multiplatform games supposed to be the same, at least thats what the developers keep saying.
As long as they give the ps3 their best, I don't care what they do for xbox.
For the Xbox 360 the main character will be all 'roid rage and grizzled, chizzled, pseudo marine stoic. More masculine than distilled testosterone and about as sexy as a wet fart in a space suit.
On PS3 everything will have soft curves, ambiguous hair-dos, effeminate voices and a generous helping of a sexy, glossy sheen.
An interesting contrast. I know which way I prefer my games…
Great analogy Highlander.
