Firmware Update 3.01 Now Live: The “Fix-It” Patch

Although firmware update 3.00 delivered plenty of significant new features, not everyone was the biggest fan of the cosmetic overhauls. Furthermore, a few unwanted glitches came along with the update as well, which is why Sony was forced to take action.

it didn't take long for Sony to acknowledge the issues that update 3.00 were responsible for, and now we have firmware update 3.01. It is currently live and available to download, so if you're one of those who experienced technical problems after obtaining the previous update, go for it. Firmware 3.01 does not include any new features and although Sony has said they'd reconsider the new-look Friends list on the XMB, that also remains the same (for now, anyway). Clearly, this update was designed to combat the aforementioned issues, and that includes Dual Shock 3 controllers that wouldn't function and frequent freezing foul-ups in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune . So far, it seems the update has indeed addressed these problems, as we've already seen reports of people being able to successfully play through the previous "freeze points" in Uncharted . We're also going to go out on a limb and assume the controller issue was fixed, too (if not, let us know). As for complaints about the visual changes and stuff like that, you may have to wait a bit longer to hear and/or see any results.  Stay tuned for that.

Oh, and we forgot to mention that firmware update 3.01 is optional. If you didn't have any problems with 3.00, you don't have to grab 3.01, but perhaps you should do so just in case…

The only problem, technical or cosmetic, I had with 3.00 was I didn't like the new start-up sound as much as the old one. Nice to see Sony's on the ball for the people that did have some serious issues.

I don't have the update. What does the new start-up sound sound like?

It's still strings warming up, but it's a different recording. It's not something terribly different, but after two years of getting used to the other one, it's weird to listen to a new one. Call me picky, but whatever.

WARNING TO EVERYONE:

Don't update because lots of people are having problems reading blu ray discs after the update. It's not mandatory anyway so there's no need to upgrade unless 3.00 wasn't working anyway.

Too Late. But Blu-Ray seems to be working fine…

Source? 3.01 seems fine to me too. A firmware update killing your blue ray drive is highly unlikely. If yours is dead tell Sony. Why don't you give it a few days before crying chicken little. The update has barely been available for 24 hours. Hardly enough time to make a sound judgement.

After every update, there seems to be a small percentage that reports BD drive issues. Sometimes a system restore takes care of it. But your best bet is ALWAYS to call or e-mail Sony.

dude this guys right… i was updating 2 of my 3 ps3's at the same time,m and now both of em have bd drive errors… wasn't until i read here and blog that this stuff's going on…

way 2 fix a problem (minor) with another problem (major) sony

it was a minor error not to be able 2 play uncharted, its major and counter productive error to not be able to play anything!

its like getting rid of frogs with snakes… frogs are gone, but now you have snakes…

Try system restore like Smileylyon said. Sony advised me to connect the PS3 via ethernet cable to do firmware updates and do one at a time.

Word. I thought the drive errors I was having on my 60gb where because of 2.80. Unfortunantly in my case the drive was indeed dead. I tired to restore it every which way I could. But It didn't work. Glad the restore worked for you. =)

I refuse to update my PS3, especially after 2.00 bricked my 60 GB model. I can't seem to find a place for good feedback about 3.00 and how it might affect a 60 GB model. Most of these message boards are filled with teenagers who can't type and come off as jerks. The official Sony PS3 message board is a frightening place.

I guess I'll have to remain offline. I don't have $170 CAN to spend on repairs, I want to use that money for Uncharted 2, R&CF and maybe Demon's Souls.

My 60 GB handled 3.00 just fine. I've noticed no problems so far. My old one bricked right around the time of GTA IV so they sent me a refurbished one, but it seems to be working fine.

I wonder if GTA IV causes issues. Mine needed repairs after GTA IV and so did a buddy of mines.

No problems here updating my OG 60G or 80G with 3.0.

For what it's worth, I have one of the OG PS3's, the 60gb one and didn't have any problems with 3.00.

I had no problems with 3.00 and I'm always wary of these updates as I did have a 2.x version brick my system. Releasing a new update this close to the 3.00 release just says to me Sony did not spend enough time testing the firmware update before releasing it and if most of the new stuff is not huge changes why rush this stuff out and risk upsetting consumers due to sloppy patches rather then just spend some extra time testing it and make sure it's good.

Does this mean I can still access PSN if I don't go to 3.01? That's the worst bit how they make you update to access PSN, forced updating.

Jawknee
Jawknee

This one is not forced. You should still be able to access the PSN without updating.

I never had in problems with 3.00, but I also don't have Uncharted to know if it would freeze or not. But I never had any Dual shock 3 problems.

Jawknee

I guess I'm one of the few who likes 3.0. i didn't like it much at first but it's grown on me. I didn't have any problems with it either. Both my slim and 60gb models work fine after 3.0 and after 3.01. I guess I can agree the Friends list design is a tad out of place but I won't say I hate it. I agree with Whooka, being forced to patch a new firmware so soon does show a lack of attention to any potential problems that may occur. However, should Sony really be expected to test every game before releasing a new update? There really was no way for Sony to know Uncharted would have problems given the many many games that get released or have been released.

I didn't have problems with 3.00 on my original 60Gig but I did have trouble on the 80 gig bought 1 month ago. The DualShocks were very long to sync and sometimes would not sync at all. I had to use the cable or restart the PS3. I will try the 3.01 update on the 80 gig system but not on the original one.

For the looks of the XMB, I always like new stuff, as long as it works.

Hey I just noticed that when watching a movie, DVD so far is all I have checked, I can rotate the right stick and it will fast forward and reverse up to 4x. I hadn't noticed it before 3.00 and I did not see it advertised as a new feature in 3.00 so have I just totally missed something or is it a new undisclosed feature of 3.00?

Jawknee
Jawknee

I'm pretty sure they disclosed it in some form or another. I forgot about this feature until you mentioned it but I do remember hearing about it prior to 3.0's release.

Yeah this was something that came with 3.0 when it released and they did make note of it somewhere. I think I remember reading it on the PS Blog, either that or in the release notes when I installed the new firmware.

Well I praise Sony for snapping to it. 3.0 is really nice but if they buggered an older game then yeah, get on in right away. They did, and now I can finish up my Uncharted trophies.

Well, I wonder if a once-repaired 60 GB might be immune to failure. That's what I want answered.

Anyway, once Trine or some big demo arrives, I'm going to have to download it. I'm just being cautious.

Jawknee

I dont think any piece of technology or electronic device is immune to failure. Once fixed though I would assume the chances of it failing again are less likely.

Refurbished units are most likely to fail as opposed to a new one. If possible get a Slim.

My console is not refurbished. I bought it new, it died on me shortly after 2.00 and was repaired. No update has bricked it since. However, even if this is really not a huge update, the fact that this update is a 3.00 concerns me. I don't want a Slim because I don't need one.

I'm glad Sony fixed the issues some have been having. I understand the too many ps store icons arguement but I feel that it's not that much of a deal. Personally, I liked update 3.00. The "what's new" section is pretty sweet.
My only complaint about 3.00 is, why did they get rid of the spiderman playstation 3 text that comes up after a game is started. I hate the look of the new ps3 logo and it should not have been force on us, non ps3 slim owners.

Oh and does anyone know if Sony will ever support netflix via the ps3? I just signed on to netlix and I have the option of streaming movies but I don't have anything beside my pc to stream from, and I don't really like watching movies on that 20 inch moniter.

Jawknee

I miss the Playstation logo and tone at game start up too 🙁 they need to bring that back. I can't think of any cosmetic reason to get rid of it.

As for Netflix, that would be neat. Give MS more competition. I believe you can stream media from your PC to your PS3 with certain softwares. Maybe stream Netflix to the PC then to the PS3? Highlander or LimitedVeritgo might be able to help with that.

when are they gonna fix it so the ps3 can read NTFS format hardrives, or make it so it remembers your wireless settings when you move from one place to another and not have to re enter all your settings over and over when you go visiting. instead of making it look good make it work first.

I'll just wait until the next forced update releases. Maybe then they will have everything fixed. But until then, I'll stick with 2.50
