We all know that Gran Turismo 5 will be another landmark achievement in the world of virtual racing. But perhaps we don't know everything there is to know…
Everyone is talking about it: according to GTPlanet , the PlayStation Eye can play a very significant – and outrageously cool – role in GT5. The Eye can do "head tracking" and while you might not consider this relevant to a racer, think about being able to turn your head and directly manipulate the "cockpit camera." You can even watch this amazing feature in action via the link above; it's amazingly sweet in just about every possible way. And as for the description from series creator Kazunori Yamauchi:
"…the movement of Cockpit Camera interface (confirmed in full 3-D. The camera can be fully manipulated and you can opt to have your head tracked by the PSEye)"
Isn't this just plain nuts? And if you want to get even more pumped, check out the full feature list for GT5; it's absolutely chock full of truly incredible stuff. Is this enough of an excuse to snag the PS Eye for $32.99? Imagine what else we could do with it…! The possibilities are almost limitless, and if we're going to have the most engaging and immersive racing experience ever, it's features like this that will give Polyphony's gargantuan effort an even bigger boost.

Now that's gaming!
Here's a peripheral that is actually worth buying for current and future games unlike say, plastic guitars.
how are u gonna look behind u and see the TV at the same time :s oh well I'm sure there is something I dont understand here, but hey, with my GT force wheel, best simulator out, well that u can buy at least, now only if I can get one of those military training jet simulators 😛
That's what I was wondering…
Yea, I was wondering too. Its a cool feature, but i'm sure they figured it out. I think it's only for looking at mirrors. Like the cockpit view doesn't have the mirrors, you have to tilt your head side to side to pan across for the mirrors.
Guys this is a cool addition, also a new feature in gaming. This is the kind of innovation I was mentioning about Sony in this generation. Even if it doesn't work like your imagination has it, GT6 will fix it or at least GT6P.
Hehe…well Dhalsim could probably do it 😀
Think Dhalsim gives himself head?
No question.
I'm with coldbore, I don't get it. Even if I just turn my head to the side I still have to keep my eyeballs on the screen and that will give me headaches faster than a tequila hangover.
Well I have the ps eye, just need the game. This could be kinda cool, except you wouldn't be able to turn your head too much or you would lose sight of the tv.
I'd bet that the system will amplify the amount of head movement to ensure you don't have to turn away from your game.
It may take some getting used to, but then again I'm usually glued to the screen and hardly blinking when I play racing games. Probably one of the reasons why it would work is by minimal head movement as you suggest.
They just need to get the tv to move with your head now…
The ps eye is great for Littlebigplanet too.
But yeah this sounds intriguing
But could be distracting, we'll see. It never hurts to add it though
Oooh! Loving the list of features on GTplanet
Maybe It'll track your head as you nod off to sleep from playing this game until the wee hours of the morning, and it'll know when to automatically shut off you PS3!
That would be f**king awesome!
I hope this feature will be implemented very well, thinking of getting a PS eye myself. This and the upcoming motion control sony is developing right now might be enough to convince me on getting the ps eye when gt5 comes out. Ayos!
Well, that'll be a shot in the Eye for Natal…
Seriously, this could be such a cool feature. I bet it will use the tracking to take the head movement to tile the camera a little. But you won't have to move that much to move the camera, otherwise you wouldn't be able to keep your eyes on the game. Think in terms of the system multiplying your movement by three or four times so that a 10 degree turn or tilt of the head to one side results in a 30-40 degree movement of the camera. It clearly can't be a 1 for 1 movement tracking since you wouldn't be able to play the game with your head turned away.
Still this will be a very cool feature. Isn't this supposed to be one of the things that Natal was going to do? And here it is in a PS3 game already? Excellent.
i think that will make me need to keep my head straight all the time to not make the camera wobble. isnt it become too sensitive?
that will make gaming hard for me….
usually when play racing games i unconsciously moving my head >__<
and also sometime move my body when on tight-turn.
but im sure PD have thinked about the problem and the solutions.
TheHighlander – That's what I was thinking. xbots will be waving their hands around while I'll just have to nod. PSEye FTW… and smaller too!
bit old news
New to me
Exactly what I thought. There was an article on this site covering the features of gt5 a while back, it didnt mention head tracking, but if you clicked the cited link head tracking was there among the many features of the game. I even cited it in one of the first comments to the article, but no one reacted to it.
yeah but if you look to the side won't you be looking at the wall… and not the game anymore. regardless of whats on the screen when you look you wont see it.
That is absolutely incredible!
How would you see the tv if your head is sideways?
you need a bigger tv
You won't actually turn your head away from the screen. You'll want to pay attention to what you're doing with the game.
Let's say you want to turn left and look at an opponent. You're not going to turn left and look at your wall. You'll look to the left of your TV screen where all the action is. The camera will pick up that movement and pan left, as though you were looking beside you. It's not virtual gaming yet, but it's a step in the right direction.
This is probably the best you're going to get until 3d TV's become the norm.
I already have the PSEye. I fully recommend it. It is a nice piece of tech. There are some cool little games for it on PSN.
Besides, you'll need it for the upcoming motion controllers… if you are into the motion controllers.
I recommend waiting until Nov. 17 to pick up the PSEye with the new Eyepet game, which will also do what Natal claims to do but will do it this year.
Indeed it will, and without the creepy child trying to be your best buddy. Honestly, what kind of adult wants a virtual best friend that's a child?
With the headtracking, the game becomes a somewhat "true 3D" both in perception and in graphics. OVERKILL!
I like this, I prefer the in car view, and being able to turn my head to check my mirrors or if a car is creeping up on the inside could be useful. Certainly adds realism.
Also nice to see that my PSEye will get some use. ( I am still annoyed after buying loads of PS2 eye games to find out that the eyetoy is not compatible with it.)
As if GT5 needed to offer another reason for me to buy it.
Can't wait!!
The PSEye is completely worth it.
The PSEye was a lot of fun in Burnout Paradise. I used to use a few of my wife's Barbie dolls – all dolled up so to speak, for my smug-shots. One night we had a couple of drunk guys in the game and they were convinced that the dolls were real…
Unbelievable, but true.
For Burnout I use my kids' faces. It's hilarious. Just got BuzzTV and that's pretty funny too.
For sho, Gran Turismo 5 is going to be so bloody awesome.
I have got the anser to everyones question, how would you see the tv? well here is the anser….ready?….Any min now….almost there….still waiting….okay this is just rediculous….wow i have not life….why am i anouning this to you guys….what are we waiting for again….. CURVED TVS! so they curve around your body. SO when you look to the side you are still looking at the tv. Aha Kevinater does it again HURAH!
Or you could just move your eyes in the direction of the tv. Its not like you have to spin your head 180 in real life to see a mirror…
Excuse me, I mean bloody mirror.

riiiggghhhttt 😉 I think your idea is much more reasonable 😛
actually that's a good idea kevinater321. I remember seeing TVs that were designed like that at CES '09, although they didn't completely wrap around your head xD
This is a cool feature, although I agree with the comments above. I think I'll wait for the enhanced PS Eye to release before I go & get the current one.
There is no enhanced PSEye coming out.
The current one is the one that will work with the motion controls and is the one coming with EyePet.
It's about time they do something with this camera.
