SCEA Announces Reality PSN Show: “The Tester”

Following in the ongoing tradition of reality TV, SCEA has partnered up with 51 Minds Entertainment ("Rock of Love," "The Surreal Life, "Flavor of Love") to offer gamers a reality show of their very own.

SCEA has announced "The Tester," a competitive reality series exclusively for the PlayStation Network. Once they have the cast nailed down, contestants will participate in elimination challenges that will "test their mental prowess, dexterity, and video game knowledge," and the winner will get a dream job in the eyes of most avid gamers: a position as an official PlayStation tester. The best news is that they're doing an open casting call for this show; head on over and fill out the pertinent online forms to enter your name (you also need to give them a short video). If you are selected, you and the other contestants will go at it for a total of eight episodes; the prize will take you to San Diego, CA where you will begin your new job as a tester in PlayStation's Quality Assurance department. This series will debut on the PSN this winter and it'll be available in high definition; you'll be able to purchase each episode individually or you can sign up to watch the whole thing, although we don't have pricing details just yet.

For more information, visit the post over at the PlayStation Blog and read up on the details. Think you've got what it takes? Want to know what it's like to test games for a living? Then nothing's stopping you…give it a shot!

I agree should be on tv. And CA means Canada, not california.

In the USA, CA means California. Like in England French Fries are called Chips. Regional differences, different names for things. Thats what happens in the internet age. This huge network of computers ties us all closer together.

Being a resident of CA, I can attest that CA does indeed stand for California. We use two letter abbreviations for our states over here in this country. You can keep Brian Boitano. 😉

I am not going into an argument about what one is better, that would be childish and offensive. But Canada is a country. Not a state. California is just a small segment of the U.S and should not take priority over a country.

Kevin, hush, you cannot win this one. Continuing to argue will only illustrate your ignorance on the subject.

Ben is an American. PSXExtreme is a U.S.-based site. Therefore, it is only natural Ben would use U.S. postal codes.

Where I work, however, we only use postal codes in headlines. In the text, we would use abbreviations, such as Calif.

Wow, As a canadian (CDN), I'm kind of shocked to see people making an issue over this way off topic comment.

You know where San Diego is..and you damn well know it isn't in canada…drop it.

You know there once was a time that Canadians were only proud of the fact that they weren't proud (Like some americans can be, oh and proud of our beer too.) Now everywhere you look some canuck is getting their panties in a bunch over something that really doesn't matter. (Killzone 2 doesn't have canadian servers..canada is bigger then california..)

Here's something for you flag wavers to think about…California became a state in September 9, 1850. Canada became a country July 1st, 1867.

What does it all mean? Nothing. If you still have an issue over this..try the forums, this isn't the place for it.

I agree, i am being immature. It's juts really annoying when trying to argue about geography with Americans.

No offence if anyone here is American. Sorry if that sounded like i was insulting you because i really am not doing that at all.

actually you weren't arguing about geography and neither was anyone else. All you did was state that CA is a state and Canada is a country which is obviously true, however that doesn't mean Canada gets preference with abbreviations. Since this is a U.S. based site and we are talking about a city in the U.S. CA should and does most definitely refer to Canada.

Isn't an age limit discrimination? In the USA? Don't we have laws about that or something?

;P

Age and appearance limitations can be applied by the employer if the restrictions are deemed appropriate to the job duties. You don't want a 98 year old man as your starting pitcher for your professional baseball team if you're the management. 😉

TheHighlander

You can set performance criteria that would be just as effective, but not discriminatory.

"Performance criteria" can still be interpreted as discrimination. 😉
And as for that 98 y.o. comment about Favre, you seriously got a chuckle out of me. Nice.
And as for being your hero, was it the Wrangler jeans commercials that won you over? :p

I think it's discrimination that i can't work for insomniac games when i'm older. You need to have a u.s degree or else your not hired. It doesn't make any sence!

@Kev
I work for a major US company, and I have a degree from a Scottish Uni. The hardest thing would be if you're fresh out of school and have no track record, then they look at your qualifications more.

If you're applying to a US firm for work from outside the US and not a citizen, you have to understand that the company would have to sponsor you on an employment visa to make it all legal. There are immigration rules that they have to obey, and if there are US based candidates with equivalent qualifications, they are obliged to select those first. You have to have something the US candidates don't have.

I know that probably doesn't help much, but it is what it is. Anytime you deal with immigration, the rules are totally crap.

Ugh! Favre retired three times so far, four if you count this year. Mark my words, he's going to leave the game this year with an injury, and that will be it. Someone who was once the most celebrated QB in NFL history, the toast of the town in Green bay, and a legend in his own lifetime will go out with such a whimper. I don't understand the motivation he has for signing with the Vikings. He was a Packer for so long, he almost became the Packers. But signing for the arch-rivals of the Packers? It seems this was what he wanted all along anyway. Why? Is he just trying to snub Green Bay?

There's a story about Green Bay that illustrates just how much that city loves it's team, and just how much of a rivalry exists with the hated Vikings. Nathan Poole, a wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals caught a pass for the winning score in an 18-17 victory over the Vikings. The standings that year were close, had the Vikings won the game, the Packers were out of the play offs. But with a Vikings loss, the Packers won their division, and went into the playoffs. So Pooles catch was a big deal. So big that the city of Green Bay invited him to Green Bay, gave him the key to the city and four tickets to the playoff game for his family.

So, Green Bay really takes this stuff to heart. Favre signing to the Vikings is a real stab to the heart of Green Bay. Why would a player with the legacy with the Packers that Favre has, throw it all away to come out of retirement for the fourth time and play for the arch rivals?

It's just plain odd.

Oh, here's a link for the story on Nathan Poole…

Why would anyone really want to win a job as a game tester? If anyone really knew how much grueling work it is, they would never speak of it again!

It's more like being offered a job in the porn industry, Sure it sounds awesome. Then you find out what you have to do is clean up the set after the gay porn scenes.

Its not what you think its going to be!!!

If I sign a contract to bang chix I'm either banging those chix or leaving. Just like game testing, I'm either gaming to my hearts content or leaving, no writing papers, no sharpening pencils.

what so you dont want the opportunity to play games months before their release?
seriously?
i dont know about you but i would kill to play uncharted 2 now instead of waiting another 6 weeks for its release.
n yea its so much hard work………. try construction, or refrigeration work, lugging up a condensing unit up a ladder on your shoulder in the rain or wiring up one in the rain. ever been electrocuted on a tin roof in the rain? i can guarantee its not a pleasant experience.
thats hard work. you should see the bruise it left, bigger than when i went paintball.

Says someone that obviously doesn't know what you do when your a game tester. You don't play games, if that's what you think they do. They give you a small section of playable area. usually no bigger then some room, in some building in the game. You then spend the next 8 or so hours(Depending on how long you actually are scheduled to work)for the next 2-3 days looking at a screen, of that same room. You then have to repeatedly follow a set of precedences to find any hiccup, bug, glitch you can then write a full report of where, you found it, What you did to make it occur, what the glitch was, and any other thing that happened because of the glitch. You then now have to spend time doing what you just wrote over and over again to try and make it repeat. It is one of the most mentally draining jobs I ever had the pleasure to have.
