Firmware 3.00 Throwing Dual Shock 3 Controllers For A Loop

Although firmware update 3.00 really is a huge update, the majority of PlayStation 3 owners haven't responded too favorably.

And perhaps the biggest issue has started to reveal itself: you will find similar complaints in most all game forums online, but you can check out this steadily growing thread in the official PlayStation forums to get the gist. Basically, it seems as if the recent update is causing problems with the Dual Shock 3 (but not with the Sixaxis, apparently). A few users are being even more specific in saying that it's the Ceramic White DS3 that's the victim more often than not, although the problem seems to extend to any DS3 out there. What happens is that while the LED lights function, telling you the controller is activated, you can't actually do anything. One simple solution is to simply re-sync the controller with the system after the update has completed, but that doesn't apparently work for everyone. For my part, I had this happen to my silver Dual Shock 3, but after restarting the machine (I have the new Slim), everything was fine.

Anyway, we'll see what Sony has to say about this; the good news is that this bug doesn't appear to be infecting massive groups of PS3 owners. Hopefully, it's nothing too serious.

Ben there is also a problem with Uncharted. I along with several others I know are unable to play Uncharted. It keeps freezing up minutes into the game. I just got a new copy of Uncharted in the mail today from Amazon (had a great deal going) and it's skipping as well. I've noticed it being talked about on forums. I hope Sony fixes this ASAP. I'm pretty pissed off about it.

Haven't noticed anything on my end. But I'll keep an eye out.

I wondered about that and fired up my copy of Uncharted, I managed to get to the firefight after you parachute to the island without a freeze up. That was a good 30+ minutes into the game. I'm running it on a PS3 60GB with an upgraded HDD, Firmware 3.0 and a DualShock 3.

So if anyone is prone to this one it should be me since I have both the dualshock 3 controller and Uncharted on an older PS3… I haven't noticed any issues with de-sync of the controller. This was a problem way, way back in the early days. The controller would sometimes de-sync and you had to hit the reset button on the underside of the controller to get it back. That was fixed in a firmware update.

As with every firmware update, for a week or two after the firmware update people are prone to blame the update for any glitch. We need to be careful not to be seeing faults where there are none, or of making more of a fault than there is.

Your copy of Uncharted is new you said, is it the GH version? Is it freezing during gameplay or the movies?

Mine is freezing during gameplay, not the movies. First it was 15 minutes into the game, the next it was 20sh. Several friends are having the same issue and on multiple SKUs. Yes my copy of Uncharted is new, it did the same thing with the older copy.

What PS3 model?

Also, I've completed the game several times, so there are no trophies for me to get. I'm wondering whether the problem could be trophy related since there is no way I will be re-awarded the trophies.

I'll boot it up under another user and see what happens with trophies. There are too many variables for it to be something specific to one model or another, or one version of the game. And since it's apparently related to the firmware update, it is most likely a trophy thing since Uncharted 1 doesn't do anything online.

Well I have both a Fat60gig and a new 120gig Slim, several friends of mine have the newer 80 gig models and another has the uncharted bundle 160gig PS3, irony that he can't play the game that came with his PS3.

I picked up Uncharted and FF Dissidia (omg Dissidia is amazing, 12 hours in and I'm still figuring out stuff, and only on my third character) and I've played like 4 hours of Uncharted, maybe more …and it's been working fine for me *shrug* I have an 80gb b/c ps3. Also, I've been getting trophies just fine, wouldn't even notice there was a problem going on.

Just tried again on a fresh user profile with a completely new game. It's not the trophies as I was getting trophies for various things in the game I got as far as the fortress before I quit. No issues at all.

Whatever it is, it's very patchy. I have a PS3 60GB with BC (as Charger says, the REAL PS3) and am using a black DualShock 3 controller with the rumble/feedback turned off. I really can't see any common factors here, and I'm getting no lock-up.

My controller is configured to automatically turn off to save power, that happens after about 15 minutes of inactivity. Do you use the auto-off feature on the controller?

That I do, oh grapes! I'm leaving for home Friday for several days to spend time with my mommy and daddy. Hopefully when I return things will have sorted themselves out somehow.

As always Highlander you're available to give tech support, can't thank you enough. Especially since I'm sure I annoy the hell out of you with my pointless comments.

60 Gb launch system, black DS3, new copy of Uncharted (never played it before 3.0)

10 hours played; trophies working, no freezes, only one instance of slowdown during a cut-scene (which didn't repeat when I replayed that bit). Touch wood. I'm sorry to hear others are having problems.

There are probably more people playing (or trying to play) Uncharted now than any time since November 2007.

I still have my two PS2s (US, Japan), but I would never get rid of my 60GB PS3. I'll just add the Slim to the collection.

Yes he owns a PS2 Slim.

No probs for me on my launch 60GB unit…but then I only double-checked the "Other OS" option was still there. 🙂 I also got a little nervous when it looked like it wasn't finding videos on my PC…seems it takes a little longer to search for available media.

I noticed my dual shock is not as responsive. When pressing the Select button it doesn't respond to the 1st press but then second. I read about uncharted this afternoon. Mine worked ok but then again I only played for about 15 minutes.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

I got through the first 30-40 minutes (skipping the movies as well, so it was a good 30-40 minutes) and was using a Dualshock 3 controller. No lock up for me either.

The Dualshock isn't one of the white ones, not that that should make a difference.

fluffer nutter

It is responsive, you just have an extra option there. Look at when you hit 'select' during video playback. There is an extra reaction so you don't just hit 'select' get the info. then hit 'select' again and go back to without the info. I thought the same thing too until I paid attention to what was happening when I hit the 'select' button the second time.

It's only acting unresponsive when trying to open the map on Batman.

Never bothered to get a DS, it costs the same as a game and all it does is shake so I just stick to my sixaxis so no problems here. I will reiterate though that Firmware 3 sucks chocolate donkey balls. Who the deuce came up with this atrocity?

I don't hate it but I don't think it was needed or asked for. I just know I was able to play Uncharted several days ago and now I cant.

Well I for one love the update. The "what's new" app is pretty sweet 🙂

I think the reason people are mad is because this update was given the name
"update 3.0" and when we are getting an update with a .0 in the end(ex1.0,2.0,3.0) people tend to expect alot of new features, and while this update brought some sweet features(IMO) It didn't bring anything we describe as "kicka$$". People were expecting cross game chat, and
even though I'm sure Sony can somehow find holes in microsoft pantent for it I do not believe Sony will ever give us this. Think about it, behind backward compability, cross game chat is the 2nd most wanted feature and
Sony has yet to give it to us.

Back on topic, I have the 60 gig ps3(the REAL PS3) and I use a DS3 and I have not had any issues with it, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

@vertigo your saying you were able to play uncharted "several" days ago and on a earlier post you said you just got uncharted from Amazon. Does that mean you have two copies of the game, Hmmmmmmmm don't lie to me or the psxetreme community

Reason to have 2 copies of a game:

1: Your first copy stopped working, or so you believe until finding out it's actually a firmware update.

2: A certain website is running a deal where you can get a brand new copy of one of your favorite games for under $20 dollars, allowing you to possess a brand new copy while giving one of your friends your old version as a pre fall gift just to be nice.

3: You just dont give a damn and roll the cash like dice, or something like that.

My vibration feature has been turned off for about a week. I just turned it back on to see if I have any issues come up. Everything has been ok so far with psn games.
