So you're sitting there with your old "fat" PlayStation 3, watching all our coverage of the new PS3 Slim and saying to yourself, "damn, that's sexy…I want it…but am I going to upgrade?"
Well, GameStop replies, "yeah, you just might wanna." It's not the deal of the century or anything, but if you want to trade in your old PS3 towards the new PS3 Slim, you will get $150 off the price of the latter, which cuts that $299 price tag in half immediately. If you've got a few games you plan to get rid of, that will help as well, and although we're not sure if you can stack the deals, there's something else to consider: if you trade in a PS2 Slim with two controllers and a memory card, you'll get $50 towards the PS3 Slim. If you can pile the two deals atop one another, that's $200 off the snazzy redesigned PS3… We're not sure if you can do the latter, though, and we have the feeling the $150 offer may not apply to the 20GB PS3. We've contacted a few stores in the area and they seem to be a little hazy on that aspect; one said they had to "find out" if you could get $150 for the 20GB machine while the other said something along the lines of, "uh…I'm not sure…I think so…?" But as far as the 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB machines are concerned, they're pretty clear on the matter; the trade-in deal is a go. You just need the stuff that came in the box (and you don't even need the Ethernet cable).
Of course, a lot of you may not want to do this because your precious 60GB model has full backwards compatibility for both PS1 and PS2 software. That's perfectly understandable. But for the rest of you, maybe this is all very, very enticing…
They stopped giving $60 credit for trading in the PS2 slim towards an Xbox 360 or PS3 Slim? I saw that advertised earlier in the week. Talk about shady. $150 for a working system doesn't sound like a lot of incentive. Especially when people have paid anywhere from $400 to $600 for these systems, that still get great usage and are running problem free? It just doesn't make sense to me as a consumer. Can someone tell me, logically, why this would be enticing? Again, not trying to start some flaming argument, I just want to try and look from outside myself, why I would want to trade in a perfectly fine, operational system and only get $150 credit towards a newer update of the system. Aside from the less power consumption and smaller footprint.
Dop we expect anything other than a con? It'd take something incredible to part me from my launch model (60 now 500G)and not a Slim for a tiny bit off!
I'd lose out on BC, Card Readers, USB slots and being able to run other OS-all of which I've used on the PS3. Now I know the Slim runs cheaper on the juice(greener as well) and supposedly quieter(though I can't hear anything fom mine now!)but it isn't nearly enough to make me think of a switch like this.
Now, if someone(Sony!)would give me money off some new Dual Shocks for my FIVE Sixaxis controllers I'd consider it! Not having to keep a PS2 under my TV on the already console and TV box filled unit is a boon I don't wish to lose. I play far too many PS2 games for that.
Indeed. Only $150 for a fully working PS3 with hardware based BC? That is one sweet deal considering how much they sell for on Ebay.
I agree with you fluffer. If the slim had BC I MIGHT consider this but I did pay $600 towards for my PS3, so that would just make my PS3 slim cost $750. Sound unfair to anyone else?
Absolutely. The amount of profit at gamers' expenses here is astounding. Why do people actually do it? Sell it on eBay or Craigslist.
Here's another thing to look at. Once that older style PS3 is sold to GameStop, what's to stop them from selling these at a higher price point? Much like they are already doing right now.

Here it is, folks. The 60GB model is for sale at GameStop for 329.99. Go and get them, even though Game Crazy was selling these for around $240, recently. I can't remember the price for these, previously, at GameStop but I think they were more expensive so I guess this is a great price.

Um, there's no way on hell or earth, I'm trading in my 60g launch PS3, for a PS3 Slim. I'd kick my own ass for that. Not to mention the 320g HDD that's currently in my Fat PS3, would have to be formatted and recoded for the new Slim, which shafts my old data (yes, you can back it up…unless the backup corrupts, which has happened in the past). Not going to happen.
Agree'd, seems like I have the exact same system as you, 320 gig hdd with full b/c.
Also, you can't put the "backup" from one system on another system, even if it's going on the same hard drive. You can copy files, just not using the backup feature.
It makes sense (to prevent cheating, duping games, etc.), but it's frustrating.
yeah, copy protected files wont be transfered at all, copy protected gamesaves, game install, videos downloaded from psn store. I should know, i had to do it when i had my ps3 repaired. I had to beat killzone 2 on elite twice to get the trophy. i beat it on elite once, but the trophy didnt sync online before my ps3 died. So i beat it again after i got a new system which i had to beat once to unlock elite and another playthrough on elite. It was a pain in the ass, even had to redo street fighter 4 and i hate seth. But the bright side is after i beat killzone 2 once, no other game is giving me trouble, the second elite killzone 2 playthrough and now uncharted on crushing is like playing it on easy mode.
Or if you really must have the slim you can sell your old ps3 on craigslist or ebay between 200 and 350. problem solved.
Too bad some save files are locked to your old console so you can't load them on the new one. They need to fix this. At least just lock them to the PSN name, not the console.
Good call, like the Sky saves they were talking about at some point. Where all the save data was tied to the username, which you could automatically grab when you logged into PSN. Definitely annoying as hell when you find that one out though. Grumble.
Ya, I got a slim from Amazon and I have a 60gb that I put in the living room since it runs too hot for my room but now I can't play certain games in my room unless I start over, which are Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5, Skate 2, GH Metallica and GH World Tour. The only ones that really bother me are KZ2 and RE5 but I just can't understand why they wouldn't have realized this and fixed it. I must say, the slim is much better looking in person than in pictures.
I got lucky, I guess, and only had 2 game saves that wouldn't copy.
Think the devs are the ones locking em. People complained because RE5 data was locked. Capcom patch it to unlock them but didn't patch the rest of their games the dawn way. Makes no sense. Why lock our data?
I can understand why they do it, because of people using saves to get trophies faster on their accounts but that's why they should lock them to PSN accounts, not consoles.
Not entirely sure how you'd unlock more trophies that way really….I was under the impression that trophies only happen, when that specific act happens to trigger the trophy message. IE…for Uncharted, for example…you get the trophy when the in-game achievement (they're separate from the trophies…even if they're the exact same requirement) pops off. You wouldn't be auto awarded a full list of trophies simply loading the game…at least, I can't see how that would work.
Game saves are NOT locked to your console. They can all be moved. What you need to do is copy them all of to a USB drive and then on your new PS3 you have to do two main things. First of all create your local user profile on the PS3 using the exact same name as you did on your original PS3. If your profile was "john" it has to be "john" on the new one. Next log on to your new PS3 and register for PSN. Make sure that you pick the option to use an existing PSN ID, you already have one you used on your, old PS3. You will need to enter the exact email address and password your PSN ID uses.
Remember to make sure that your new PS3 is enabled for games under your PSN account. As long as your local profile name and PSN account match your old system you should have no problems.
This does work, I have moved users between systems before including all game saves without a problem. And that includes locked game saves.
If your local profile name is incorrect, or you use a different PSN ID or the new PS3 isn't activated for games on your PSN ID, none of it will work.

Well, for the trophies, say you had to kill 1000 enemies to get the trophy and someone saved at 998 or something, then it would be quick to get 2 kills. That's the only thing I can see that they'd lock it for. Highlander, I tried what you said and I can't get it to work. Maybe I'll have to try to restore it again and see if I can get it to work.
I did it over again and the saves still don't load. They transfer, just won't load. Oh well. I'm calling Sony to see what they say. Maybe they will help but I doubt it. Hopefully they at least can say yes or no for sure. I guess I'll just have to start some games over.

Something in your configuration doesn't match. If your profile name (the name you log into on your PS3) is the same, and I mean exactly the same down to the capitalization, and your PSN ID is the same (that would be the email and password, along with the screen name) it does work. It has to, it's the only way you can restore a game save after a system failure.
Burnout Paradise locks the game save just like the games you mention. I have moved Burnout (and other) game save files between three different PS3s with no problems. There has to be something in the configuration that doesn't match.
Well, on my system, Burnout Paradise isn't a locked file so it works for me. When I look at the file, it shows that it's not locked so maybe they patched it? And RE5 works now because they patched it so the one I'm really only bothered by is Killzone 2. But all my stuff matches exactly. I called up Sony and the guy told me that each company locks it differently and if there is a way around it, then only that company would know how to do it but he's never heard of a way around it. Of course, he could have no idea what he is talking about but he stated games that were locked right away so he seemed like he knew something about it.
@ Highlander – Not sure if I can agree with you, simply from what I've encountered with my PS3. I had to do a restore, and I actually did a full backup, and an independant game save backup. Sure, it's overkill, but I didn't want to lose that stuff. Anyway, long story short, I made sure I could view the files via my USB, and my portable HDD before I put the new 320g in….and that was the last I was able to touch those save files.
My PSN ID is the same as my login…so, I have no idea. Maybe I did something wrong (this really isn't a 'you're lying' response…, simply, I kinda wished it would've worked lol), that's entirely possible. But, I was following some very specific directions for all of it. Anyway, hopefully it's a fluke and an isolated incident.

My apologies, you are right and I apologies for being so certain of myself. It appears that some game devs are locking their files to the PS3 as well as the PSN ID and profile name.
That's crazy. When the guys at Criterion locked their file to the PSN ID and profile name that was annoying enough for some, but it did at least prevent cheating without preventing a user from moving their game save or backing it up to USB.
I wasn't aware that other devs are locking the files to the PS3s system ID so it's completely non-portable. What're you supposed to do if there's a YLOD and you get a new system from Sony? Do you know if any of the developers have answers the obvious "Why?" question? Why the heck would they lock the file to the system ID? You can lock and encrypt the file using the profile name and PSN ID and the file is more than effectively locked, but you can move it between systems without the problems of cheating since the save is still locked to a specific PSN ID. There is no need to lock to the system ID at all.

Screw that, that is an awful deal! I just picked up a PS3 slim for my room at my local Bestbuy. It's a damn cool system. Now I have a fat 80 gig in my living room and the slim in my bedroom.
No Thank You. Although I already own one, even if I didn't buy a PS3, the design for the Slim just puts me off.
I guess I'm the only one here who is somewhat enticed by the idea. Why?…i suppose it's just because I like the look of the slim and the greater energy efficiency. I'm told it's a bit quieter too, but my current 80gig model doesn't make a peep…

I'm tempted (in general, not this offer) to get a slim for the heat/noise/energy reductions, but every little thing I hear about the 120Gb system gives me pause (like the new buttons or the lack of an on/off switch). I wouldn't trade my sexy beast, though.

You should go see one in person. The slim is a well built console and the buttons feel solid and not cheaply put together. Being in constant stand-by is no big deal as long as you're connected to a surge protector.
I'm selling my 60 Gig console when i get it back for the second time from sony. I don't want to have to pay another 150 if it breaks again out of 90 days. I think i'll go the ebay route. Atleast i already have my 120 gig slim!!!! 🙂

Or you could save your PS3 and build a supercomputer!!! lol I just bought the slim, and have a 60 GB PS3, and if you have an extra room in the house with a TV, a second PS3 is well worth the money. It's so quiet it's unbelievable that the console is actually running and 120 GB is plenty of space. I have 26 disc-based games, and 19 titles off of PSN and after insalling all the games, game data, and add-ons I still have about 60 GB's left for future purchases. At $300, the slim is truly a great value.
My fat one plays PS2 games, so no thanks. Good deal for anyone without B/C though.
I don't really see the point to why anyone should trade their PS3 for their PS3 slim. First off, that very console that's sitting right next to me has been through all the ridicule and all the mockery and only inches away from being the next Dreamcast. But all the perseverance and the PS3 begins to gain back it's name. Now it has literally become a "collector's edition".
The PS3 slim has no such history. They're just the fruits being born out of the PS3. So I'm keeping my PS3 to honor it!!

My PS3 is not BC but I worked to hard this summer to earn the money to buy my $400 80gb phat…just to trade to Gamestop for $150!(and I really really love my PS3 phat)if I want a Slim Ill just save up some more money to buy one.

wait, only $150? I don't know about other models but you can sell an original 60 gig for about $300 on Ebay. quite the ripoff there.
