Oh…NO. It's almost too much for my poor ol' heart to take…but the rumor Final Fantasy VII fans can barely even acknowledge without bursting into tears has returned.
Perhaps that's a touch melodramatic but considering it's quite possibly the single biggest and longest-running rumor in the history of video games (next to the now-defunct Duke Nukem Forever ), it's not that over-the-top. The concept of a FFVII remake has been around for years but each and every time we think we're days away from an announcement, Square-Enix rips out our hearts again. It's almost too difficult to bear. But maybe the days of misery will yield the brightest day of all… According to VideoGamer.com , Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase addressed the idea of a remake and said:
"As for a VII remake, all I can advise right now is to play the PSN release that just came out for the time being. Maybe, perhaps we'll have some news for you at a later time."
He didn't just say that, did he? Did he?! Kitase will continue to see FFXIII through to the end of its production, and he's also working on Final Fantasy Agito XIII but beyond that, he said he "doesn't know exactly what new projects" he'll be handling in the future. But that is by far the most leading statement offered by any Square-Enix representative on the rumor of a FFVII remake, and it's bound to cause a stir. Back in April, Kitase made another comment that, while not as promising as this one, was still encouraging. And when you combine the two statements…
Oh, God help us.

I believe I have just recieved a phoenix down!! Which i did not want I thought I just left the rumor in the back of my mind for good but NOOOOO this just HAD to pop up! 🙁
i just took a hyper…=[
Oooooh baby. I have no doubt this game would sell millions in the first week. Possibly even set records across the world.
If they do remake it, they better keep it exclusive to the family of consoles which has brought SE success.
Yes i think so too.
Tbh though, i want a FF6 remake! Absolutely brilliant that was and thats still in 2d, should be that.
However, i don't know what to think about a remake of FF7…
Its touchy. Any wrong move could spell disaster. I don't want Advant Children style OTT cutscenes etc and i think they would get rid of the free roam world map too…
Im just not too keen on this. I think they would change too much.
Hmm…
"Advant Children style OTT cutscenes" and "no free roam world map" IS FFVII:Advent Children.
Thats what im saying, i think they will commercialise it too much and have it like the film.
Enix ain't my fave at mo…i hope they just one day prove me wrong.
The lack of free roam worlds since X has been a huge disappointment to me. With every new FF comes new hopes that free roaming returns and I'm let down every time.
Thats exactly what i thought.
When Dragon Quest 8 brought it back, you felt the major difference. Brought back RPG class.
Jawknee: Huh? FFXII was all ABOUT free roaming. Or at least more so than any other FF in history; the areas were huge by comparison.
@Ben. I guess I meant in the same way VII, VIII and IX was. I enjoyed crusing around in the Highwind and Ragnorok. That feature has been gone too long.

@ Lotus
an ff6 remake would also be very welcome.
Those looooooooooong forced treks back and forth through the wilderness in FFXII didn't FEEL the same as optional wandering of a world map.
In that respect, I agree. I do miss the traditional world map.
Not to call you out ben… but that is the wrong type of "bear."
"It's almost too difficult to bear."
"bare"
Anyways that's a change from the usual flat out no they generally say!
Its the right type 😀
Only if you're talking about going around naked.
opps excuse me… spoke to soon…

I WANT A SPACE INVADERS REMAKE!!
Heck maybe Ninja assault
Excuse the perverse analogy here but SE is like some bad hooker. You pay them, expecting them to put out, then they say "We want more $$$.". Yeah I hope this translates to some announcements sometime soon like TGS. This foreplay is getting old!
then MS is a bad hooker too, soon to be dead hooker.
MS is the bad hooker you paid for, didn't put out, took the money off the dresser, and booked. haha
The way SE has been screwing us over lately, watch them remake it but for 360 only…
Deep down, I am hoping they will eventually remake FFVII but I want it to be PS3 exclusive, but that may not happen, at least not in North America probably.
I almost don't want this remade unless it is exclusive. I want a remake done right using all the PS3's capabilities. If this gets remade as a mulitplat and held back due to the short comings of the 360. I'd be angry and consider this the ultimate betrayal by Square. I don't want one of my favorite games to be remade into another mediocre multiplat.
That said though, I thought Sony owned some rights or steak in FFVII? If they do, couldnt they stop this from going multiplat?
They mentioned from the past that they don't want to buy exclusives.
I wish sony would make some kind of agreement with square enix to make it exclusive. Like how they did with rockstar to make agent exclusive.
yeah, an exclusive sounds good but remember some things dont stay exclusive especially games that are far from being released. Microsoft still have their big ol' bag of money and i know they will use it. If you think that microsoft wont do something concerning those top games you're kidding yourself.
True but if what I was told is correct and Sony has any kind of ownership rights to FFVII then there isn't a damn thing M$ could do about it.
IF a remake is made…IF mind you…If they remake FFVII, then rather than 'remake', I think they need to trash the old script, and keep characters and outline of the FFVII story. It's a good story, but you can't keep the same script and just remake it.
I don't mean re-imagine the game completely and make it all grown up and gritty realism and violence. This isn't Battlestar Galactica. But then again neither is it a kiddies game. It'd be a hard balance to strike. re-imagining FFVII in such a way that it's more modern and current without losing the charm and whimsy of the JRPG original, and yet at the same time capturing the melodrama and drama of the original with all the monumental events that occur. Treating it too lightly would trivialize some of the events and would feel wrong.
I don't honestly see how this can be done without offending a decent sized section of the fans of the original game.
All that said, I would love to see a remake, especially if it keeps the main characters, plot points an story, but updates the scritp and mood a little. It could be utterly awesome – if done right.
I agrizzle, I mean I agree. But in the right hands it would be a breeze to keep the jrpg charm and still update the script. They could even add to the game in the form of previously unresolved plot points. Hire the Advent actors… it would be awesome.
but if they trash the script it'll just be a final fantasy sequel. i mean a sequel for this sounds good too but I'd prefer it to be the same game but visually upgraded, maybe minor fixes in the dialogue too.
No, if they throw away the script and write new dialog for the same story and characters it's a remake. just as Battlestar Galactica is a remake, and not a sequel.
@Ben — just wanted to say that as I make my rounds across the Internet looking for the latest game news, I always know I can count on you to stay on top of the FF VII remake rumors and speculation 🙂 Your coverage on this topic is second to none, sir!
Big surprise there. 😉
well, what do you expect. this is what happens when the author actually plays/cares about video games. Not just some guy aiming to get hits on their site without much knowledge about what he/she writes.
Hey, we're gamers first. 😉
I read from another source that "Both Toriyama-san and Kitase-san were involved in the development of the game, however, and it holds a special place in their hearts. They do talk about it on a personal level, like, "If we did it it would be like this or like that"."
If they're serious about it, they NEED to keep it exclusive to the playstation 3. Not only would this save them a lot of time and money from making an xbox 360 version as well. But doing so would make fans "re-experience the classic on a PLAYSTATION console". Porting the remake would seriously crush that nostalgic experience.
The original game certainly made its identity as a playstation game. So why not do it again on the playstation 3?
I wish square would see the importance of exclusivity.
Just give us want we want SquEnix,…
Bust-A-Groove 3.
YES.
hey, I actually have a question for everyone — should Cait Sith be in a remake? Everyone has very different, very strong views about what a remake/reimagining/whatever should include. But I for one pretended Cait Sith wasn't in the original, and 12 years after the fact I hate that thing more than ever. Worst FF character ever, as far as I'm concerned.
But am I alone in this thinking? Would this just not be FF VII anymore if a giant stuffed animal controlled by some dude remotely via magic (or something)was not included? Really curious about people's Cait Sith thoughts.
It wouldn't be a full remake if one of the main characters is left out.
Yeah, a remake is just a graphical overhaul. NOTHING else should change except maybe a few added cut-scenes or something.
Cait Sith plays a very important part in the temple of the ancients. He retreieved the BLACK materia so Cloud and Areis could Escape. so he is needed.
Seriously, the plot wouldn't work without the Shinra spy turned friend.
Thanks for the replies, everyone. Guess I'm very much in the minority! It's all good, though. It's been a WHILE since I played through the game, I had quite frankly forgotten how intricate Cait Sith was to the plot.
lol. rumor never dies.
Ugh, i really hope they dont, Final Fantasy VII is fine how it is. I hate the conecpt of remakes, they always make remakes of good material, and then it ends up being worse than the original. Why not remake a bad game/film and improve it.
I hear ya. It's like cover songs. My band will never cover a song unless were 100% sure that it will be just as good or better.
I generally agree with you, but I want the FF VII remake because as a PS1-era game, there is now SO much more capability to fully realize the terrific vision of the original. I hear you, I really do, generally speaking remakes are unnecessary. But this one game SCREAMS for a remake, as far as I'm concerned.
