For the record, we at PSXE have always been on David Cage's side, and we never once accused Quantic Dream of "only" including Quick Time Events (QTEs) for the gameplay in Heavy Rain . But Cage knows a lot of other journalists have, and he's a little annoyed.
Quantic Dream's promising title is once again in the limelight after yet another stunning trailer debuted at GamesCom this week. We have also postulated in the past that Heavy Rain might actually represent the start of a whole new genre . But Cage wanted to address those who are misinterpreting the gameplay: according to Eurogamer , some gamers around the Internet "just make him crazy."
"No! We don't make Dragon's Lair! This is not Dragon's Lair – do you think I'm crazy? I'm not stupid. Do you think I develop on PlayStation 3 to do Dragon's Lair again? It would be absurd. Of course it's not.
So we work on this thing, it's fully controllable, you do what you want. When there is an action sequence, yes we integrate this QTE sequences. We've done it really in a new way, we really started from a blank page again to try to take the best out of this type of interface and find the thrill and excitement and make you feel at the heart of the action."
Cage wants to clarify that the game is "fully interactive throughout" and you will face plenty of decisions at any given time during your adventure. For example, in the trailer you saw yesterday, you can choose to behave like a responsible father, be more strict, or simply be apathetic. What you do will have a direct impact on the following sequence of events and although the scripted action portions will incorporate QTEs, it's hardly the "only" mechanic in the game. We're glad Cage took the time to clear this up; now we don't have to explain it all the time. 😉

Dragons lair, I wasted a shed load of money to buy that tripe when it came out. Luckily Heavy Rain looks set to be an engaging emotional story. Loved Fahrenheit and am sure to love this.
I have that & a space ace cabinet in my game room, but they just collect dust now, what a terrible impulse buy.
I'm sure that at this point it might be a collectible and valuable thing to someone
Maybe this game will redefine the concept of 'moral choices' .
And hopefully, create morals for "those" gamers.
He has a right to be annoyed, im sick of people whining about QTE aswell, It worked so well for Farenheit and Shenume, it will work for Heavy Rain too.
Agree, when used well, it adds to the game, I think Uncharted:DF should have had more than it did.
I think Tomb Raider: Legend did a good job as well.
This is going to be the best movie ever… Wait… It's not a movie!? lol jk
This is going to be a sure GOTY contender next year. QD is doing a fantastic job and whatever they do I'm sure without a doubt will revolutionize the industry. I hope other devs will be inspired by their work and will stop complaining (Valve) and actually push themselves to produce a quality product.
Now if you will excuse me I need to kill some Chimera in RESISTANCE:RETRIBUTION.
Good for him, I was getting tired of that nonsense anyway. And ESPECIALLY about anyone who says this game is only about the graphics. Just because PS3 is a graphics powerhouse doesn't mean it sacrifices all else in gameplay for any exclusive.
Not trying to dis the game, but I'm kinda wondering how many people will actually be interested in buying it if they can't quite grasp what kind of game it is. It does seem like just an advanced DRAGON'S LAIR to quite a few, from comments I've seen online (and not just 360 fanboys), so I think it's gonna take some good marketing (and probably a decent pre-release demo) to really sell it.
For me, though, it's looking better and better each time new footage is released. The voice acting still seems a bit on the stale side.

You are right there I think, because I still don't know what genre its supposed to be, I think it might miss the masses and just be a sleeper hit with aficianados because its hard to put in a box and label.
I was never under the impression that QTE's were all there would be to the gameplay. I don't have a problem with them being used in games. Some developers actually use them quite well.

I think the problem is that this generation, everyone has become accustomed to annual COD's, weekly Guitar Hero releases, etc. Anything new, different, and original is going to meet with some cynicism. Hopefully people keep and open mind and give it a try.
Does Cage want to get off his high horse and actually show us something other than QTEs then?
good point
No kidding. Heavy Rain better be good with all his "Peter Molyneux"-like smack talk.
Alienange
Did you mean something like this?

@ jaynet333 – What part of that video are you referring to? The 20 seconds where you do detective work? Not enough.
Some devs mouth off all the time and think that just because they've put out a decent game in the past that we should be quaking in our boots every time they show us a video. He deserves the flak. We're his potential customers so he should either present the goods or be quiet.
When the time is right, yes. I wouldn't really care if the game was a majority of QTE's.
I hope there is a time limit to do the QTE's, like in the new gameplay footage, when he is being robbed and all the words are swirling around. It is suppost to be hard to read, but if you had as long as you wanted to read them then it would take me out of that hypnotic state that the good games put me in. It will add to the realism if you had a time limit, but it didn't show you how long you have. So every scene is different with different characters patience. But i am really lookinbg forward to this game.
Edit: typos 😉

Thanks people.
Sorry about the off topic
to go ask on the forums helpline
You can use an Ipod (if it's big enough) or External Hard Drive easily.
Off of the top of my head, I think it's under "system" -> "back up utility". Just connect you Ipod or HD and hit "x".
Even though you're off-topic…
You can't restore the backup from one PS3 onto another PS3; another HDD in the same PS3, yes, but not another PS3.
You can't take the HDD from one PS3 and place it into another without re-formatting it.
You can copy non-copy-protected saves individually to an external drive and then to the new PS3.
You can re-download any games, DLC, and demos to the new PS3 (up to five total systems).
Remember to sync your trophies with the server before you get rid of the old PS3 and then you can sync the new PS3 with the server and all your trophies will be there.
If you're getting rid of the old PS3, remember to reformat the HDD and restore the system to its original settings before you give it to someone else.
In short, there is no quick way; it's a pain in the ass.

How come the ads on psxe block the article, this only happens to me when I use my ps3's browser. I hope you can fix it Ben, I visit this website for all my playstation related news……sorry for the off-topic comment.
At least PSXE hasn't had a questionable ad that causes browsers to think it's a malicious site in a while! 😉
Those who say this is nothing but QTE they just don't get it. There's loads of information on this game.
True.. People who still keep saying that are just plain ignorant. There's more than enough info and gameplay vids on the internet that prove otherwise.
@Alienage
Here's a nice long gameplay video ,just for you. And it contains only a few seconds of QTE's. Sorry about the sucky picture quality. I couldn't find anything better.

Thanks but those videos are really terrible. In the second video he clearly states this is "not about game mechanics" but "contextual actions." Isn't that basically QTEs?
To be honest, even if it was rudimentary movement, combined with QTE's, I wouldn't care. I'm not going into Heavy Rain, looking for a fast-paced frenetic shooter. This will be a deep storyline, driven by immense amounts of emotion and nerves, with absurd replayability (if you can remember all the choices you made the first time around haha). I'm looking for Quantic's Dream signature touches…and something that reinvigorates a genre of gaming long abandoned by gamers.
@Alienage
No. QTE's and context sensitive controls aren't the same thing.
QTE's are a series of timed button presses that you need to hit during an action sequence. You fail if your timing is off, or if you hit the wrong button. Example: The part where Madison performs a dance in the nightclub scene.
Context sensitive controls are moves a videogame character can only perform in certain situations. Examples: Pulling levers, opening doors, climbing ladders, etc. Obviously ,you can only perform these actions when standing next to a lever/door/ladder.
What makes Heavy Rain different from other games is that most of the controls are context sensitive. Hence the on-screen prompts. In other games, each button on the controller has a specific purpose. But in Heavy Rain, each button's function varies, depending on the situation.
THe only specific controls this game has are the following :
Hold R2 to make your character walk in the direction S/He is currently facing.
Hold L2 to bring up your character's thoughts.(Those words that float around their heads.)
The left analogue stick controls your character's head and shoulders. So, it's used to look around and to steer your character while they walk.
Press L1 to change the camera angle.
That's it. All the other controls are context sensitive. Hope that clears it up.
