You know, we keep thinking Hollywood producers will wise up and simply avoid turning video games into movies. Either that, or they'll try harder. On the gaming side, designers are learning themselves; they're not so interested in earning bad reputations and sacrificing money for crappy film-to-game adaptations.
A good example is Marvel Executive Vice President of Global Digital Media Group, Ira Rubenstein. He tells Joystiq that Marvel is through with producing "crappy" video games based on movies. But at the same time, he's not ruling out the concept entirely; they still want to have certain game titles tied to the theater release of hot action films, but "each character should stick to their own worlds." Rubenstein used the recent, decent X-Men Origins: Wolverine title as a "for instance" of the company's new direction. Remember, that game – which really was fun – was not based around the "Wolverine" movie. Said Rubenstein:
"We are not doing movie-based games anymore. Actually, wait … we are not doing crappy movie-based games anymore. You can quote me on that."
Now, as for Iron Man , Rubenstein says development on the game sequel has been in the works since the first game was completed. So there's no stopping it, but Rubenstein insists the sequel will actually be good, and to just ignore the mess of the original. Hey, this guy has good stuff to say; if we get more games like Wolverine and the Marvel bigwigs have recognized trash like Iron Man , we're good to go. Also, remember that Rubenstein announced the Digital Reader for the PSP Go during yesterday's press conference. These people seem committed to keeping the good name of certain comic book heroes alive…
Yet they are still making Iron Man 2 which looks to be an upgraded version of Iron Man 1 hmmm…. We'll see about this comment. Sorry if I may seem skeptical…
Did you read the last paragraph?
Yes and I am STILL skeptical about Iron Man 2 BECAUSE it looks like "an upgraded version of Iron man 1."
The last movie-based game I thought was really good was Goldeneye 007. The first Godfather game was alright too. I hope this is true, but I'll have to see it to believe it. Now, if only we could get Hollywood to pledge to stop making crappy game-based movies.
has anyone played G.I. JOE? it was the most horrible piece of crap i've ever layed my eyes on. NO JOE!
COBRA!
Didn't even know they made one.
and you find this surprising because…
I played the Wolverine demo and it was plenty fun. Too bad the movement/locales felt too much like it was "on rails", if that makes any sense.
Anyways, Spiderman and Marvel Ultimate Alliance were good.
So there are some good ones…
This is a wait and see for me. They can talk all they want but movie based games have been really bad and will continue to be really bad if they keep releasing them along with the movie.

You beat me to it, exactly what I was thinking. The only way the games won't suck is if they don't have a rushed deadline to meet. If they take their time making it, they'll be decent. If they just try to cash in on the movie hype…the games will fail.
lol 'bout time!
I've never in my life bought a game based on movies.
Oh, and I forgot to mention…
The new Batman: Arkham Asylum is actually pretty fun (from the demo).
i never played any movie based game in any generations, i mean not even a single one. The thing we seek in video game is the fantasy world and the fascination of the plot and awesome gameplay, movie based games deliver none of those… all cheap and fast making, so stop creating any of those junk to gamers, and stop being greedy

They wanna milk everything they can possibly milk
And that includes cats!
indeed. lol
Everybody should just stop with the movie-based games. Period. The big problem with them is that they have to be rushed out to market to coincide with the film. Plus, there are way too many of them and a lot of them are just mediocre. I don't even recall the last time I bought one or even played one.
I don't like it when a game story like intertwines with a movie. Because most of the movie based games that i have played don't even have a good storie. Like why can't they do exactly what the movie does, and not go and do some random side missions that have very little to do with the movie.
I think movie-to-game adaptations will never work. If the game is set in the same general time as the movie then fine, but the story needs to be loosely based on the movie. Otherwise the game is just too linear and just crappy.
A good game can take years to make, there's not enough time to make a good game based off a movie.
Wolverine was in the works prior to the movie even being made, they just found a way to tie them together.
they should focus on designing awesome games first, then adapt it to add, or enhance the comic universe.
Problem is, the game isn't the central focus, its just there as an extra experience for fans of the movie. A great game is always its own focus.
agree, good game first. should be able to stand on it's own. Movie tie-in second.
Maybe with the rumours of the hybrid disc, we'll see games being released with the Blu-ray of the movie instead of the Theater release. Gives the developers a bit more time to work on the game and you can buy the game when you buy the movie for your PS3..Sounds like a seller to me!
That is a bold statement since almost all movie games to date have been crappy.
Iron Man could have easily been a quality game but they managed to mess that up.
Have to wait and see if any QC takes place.
what movie-base games are terrible? I dare someone to name me one bad game
You sir are hilarious.
Would be easier and quicker on the page load if people just stated the good games.
Spiderman 2 was pretty good for ps2. The demo for Wolverine was one of the few demos I played multiple times. Wanted was extremely mediocre, Iron Man was even worse though.
I liked the mechanics in Wanted (demo), but the level design was horrible.
At least it included the training part of the game; I hate it when demos drop you in the middle of heavy action (or worse, a boss battle) without any training in how to play the game. The Dead Space and Riddick demos, for example, made me not want to play the games (and I was excited for both).

"of certain comic book heroes alive…"
sums this up pretty well.
I wish Marvel would make a decent Iron Man game.
The Spider-Man movie games have been pretty good I would blame the complex story for the way Spider-Man 3 game turnout. The only Marvel movie game I didn't like was X-2 Wolverine's revenge because it had nothing to do with the X-2 only that you could unlock Wolverine's X-2 uniform.
I bet Rubenstein would just LOOOVE that we forget about the first Iron Man game and go running to the stores to buy the second one based off of his great speech. He's playing us for fools!
