PS3 Slim: Unmasked In Full, Details And Videos Included!

As you already know, the PS3 Slim was revealed earlier today at the GamesCom event in Cologne, Germany, and the gaming world is all kinds of excited. We brought you the first details from Kaz Hirai on stage but now, we finally have the official documents from Sony, plus videos of the actual Hirai reveal at GamesCom and SCEA president Jack Tretton.

Yes, you know the stats: 120GB hard drive, 32% smaller, 36% lighter, 34% more efficient, a dazzling new $299 price tag and a launch date of September 1. Additional details we've received from Sony's press release says Japan will get this nifty new console on September 3 for the price of 29,980 yen. Also, we knew the current 80GB PS3 would have to experience a price drop as well, and that has also happened: as of today, August 18, the price of that system will be down to $299 in North America and 299 Euros in Europe. The 160GB machine gets an equivalent $100 price drop – down to $399 – which means that this significant price slashing is effective the whole way 'round; it doesn't matter which PS3 model you go shopping for.

The Slim has been "completely redesigned;" the reduction in power consumption will result in a quieter machine, and the "textured surface finish" adds to the appeal, and we shouldn't forget that it has inherited the "sleek curved body design of the original model." It features a new "PS3" logo, too. As for new stuff, this new console will come equipped with the Bravia Sync feature: if you connect the PS3 Slim to a Bravia TV with an HDMI cable, you'll be able to "directly operate the XMB on PS3 using the TV remote." How cool is that ? Furthermore, due to the slimming down of the machine, we'll be able to stand it vertically if we so choose; there will be a Vertical Stand for this system, that you will be able to purchase for $24. The only possible downside? They have removed the "Install Other OS" feature, so users will not be able to install other Operating Systems on the PS3 Slim.

Now, because we seriously doubt you were in Cologne today, and because there didn't seem to be any live video feed from the conference (we sure as hell couldn't find one), here's the official announcement from Kaz Hirai:

When you're done watching, check out SCEA president Jack Tretton, who takes time to talk about the PS3 Slim as well:

When the slim is on shelves for $299 on Sept 1st, will it be next to the 80gb PS3 which also going for $299? Seems daft to me if the 80gb was still on shelves for the same price. Maybe the 80gb will be removed or get lowered again? But who would go out there and buy a 80gb PS3 for $299 when a slimmer model with 120gb hdd will come out in a couple of weeks also for $299. I'll be surprised if they sold many 80gb PS3's in the next couple of weeks.

yeah, there are no card readers. look again, those seem like vents. That is where the Hard drive probably sits.

sorry no card reader. that's the hdd cover in all it's glory. apparently they added vents to that too.

I know I'll get thumbed down for this, but I agree with you.

I'm not going to buy the new PS3 slim until my PS3 breaks and cannot be fixed, or I get it for Christmas? (Highly unlikely to get this for Christmas because I already own 2 PS3s)

I'd rather stick with my shiny PS3 instead of that dull PS3 🙂

Unless the new PS3 Slim has some kind of OMGWTF new feature, I wont be getting it.
I still own the original fat PSP, still own the original PS1, and I used to own a slim PS2, but it sadly broke when trying to play GTA.

Luckily, I have BC in my 80GB PS3! 🙂

I know! If it's $199 I'll buy this as a second PS3, and use it as a blu-ray player. Now I'm just curious how many people that have been claiming to be sitting on the fence, will be jumping onto the PS3 this year.

$199 ????

Sony has already said it is priced at $299. Didn't you read the article?

I think it looks pretty sleek. Either version, the PS3 console is the sexiest looking.

One question though…When will we get an option for a
white one!!! Those look awesome.

Sorry, this isn't related but you seem to be able to find the oddest pictures of prince. Don't get me wrong, the man is a genius. I'm just laughing at the picture.

Lol. Its new. He just doesn't follow no rule or trend. He dares to be different…thats why he's considered a genius.

I like it. He hasn't been looking like "Prince" these last few years since he became relevant again but rather, some 70s pimp lol, now, he seems "Prince" again as evident with the pic and most definitely the latest album.

I am coming to really respect both Kaz Hirai and Jack Trenton… The way they both present their products and themselves show genuine trust in what they are doing and what they are selling. They genuinely believe that their products are "the best" without having to bring down other forms of electronic entertainment. It's pretty impressive in my opinion…

On the slim… Damn that looks sleek. Anyway I don't see myself buying on in the forseeable future but I am sure going to be jealous of my friends who have been waiting on the price cut to get a PS3. Pretty sick.

It actually looks really good. It has some shine there, just not on the front. Anyways, gamers would be fools to not buy this at 300 bux. What a gift to gamers everywhere.

I am going to buy one. I know it's too late, but what if it was called the PS3000 like the PSP did when it got anorexic.

Honestly, the PS3 Slim is still pretty thick. Look at how high end laptops can fit within 1" thickness, that includes LCD monitor,a battery pack, keyboard, mouse.

The Slim came out in the 3rd year of it's 10 year lifetime. It's possible to have a "PS3 mini" in it's 7th year, 2013 (You heard it from me first!).

But I am still really excited over this. Go Sony! I hope that the Slim will bring more install base to PS3, so more 3rd party developers bring exclusives back to PS family.

they kinda have to put a place for the bluray drive, chipsets, and of course the 2.5 in sata hard drive so you cant get any thinner than that.

The PS3 slim is so sexy I'm slightly tempted to buy one even though I own a 60GB PS3. Now that the PS3 slim is coming at $299.99 price shouldn't be much of a factor for those deciding on which console to buy. For $50 more than the Wii you can get a REAL next gen. console that plays BR movies and with the awesome games on the PS3 now and the ones coming down the road Sony is making it very tough to resist buying one.

I am not 100% sure, but I think that the front cover at the bottom of the Blu Ray disk drive is where you remove the hard drive to upgrade it.

Not really impressed. Kinda dumb to make those changes don't you think? I mean no more touch sensors? No more Linux? I say if it ain't broke, then don't fix it. The whole bravia thing i couldn't care any less about, because I would never in a million years buy a Sony T.V.

So, $100 less, smaller, less power, less heat, quieter, and no lost features, just the alteration of the front panel buttons to something less expensive than the touch sensitive ones. and is that a tray losing BluRay Drive?

I think I need to be paid Pachter's money this quarter.

I note that the PSPGo! price is now effectively $210 thanks to the bundling of GT PSP with it. Isn't that a price drop in effect?

Oh, I heard a collective gasp a short while ago from the general direction of Washington State.

😉

They need to add at least one USB port in the back. It looks ugly having a cable hanging from the front when using my external HD.

also it would be neat of the if this Bravia synce worked with other tv's. I get why they did it though. My next tv will be a bravia.
