We're less than a day from Sony's press conference at GamesCom but the closer we get, the more the inevitability of a PlayStation 3 price cut becomes evident.
As noted by MCVUK , "the discounting of PS3 hardware on the UK High Street has begun thanks to national supermarket Asda." Starting today, consumers have a shot at a "limited promotion" for the current 80GB PS3 model: you get the console plus two games for only £250, which signifies a £50 price cut. One such bundle included inFamous and Terminator: Salvation , but it seems customers can mix-and-match other titles, like Killzone 2 , Resistance 2 , and LittleBigPlanet . In recent weeks, we've heard rumors that retail stock of the 80GB PS3 has been dwindling, and one UK retailer even said they were told not to expect any more shipments. The rumor is that this model will go the way of the dodo, and a cheaper, slimmer PS3 will replace it as the default machine on store shelves. Sony will keep the 160GB model but drop it $100 to $400, or so the speculation says. We're not really sure what to believe, but we're going to post up our GamesCom expectations later today.
For now, just be excited for tomorrow's news. Be very excited. Oh, and by the way, the secret PS3 exclusive PSXE knows about is not on tap.
Not long to go before we know for sure….*looks at clock ticking*
Why do you have to do that? >.>
Oh and First!…erm second :/
Watch out Imagi! The moderator around here runs things with a iron fist. We've seen him berate people for those "first" comments. You might have to beg for his forgiveness…..now I'm going back to watching the clock tick too.
we at psxextreme proud ourselves for not tolerating new members who participate in such activities such as putting first at the beginning articles.
you wont have just ben (the mod) to worry about if you continue.
Yeah, not something I would normally, do in fact I never have, but that then empty comment space was too tempting to have a go at least once.
It is out of my system now, so no need to worry.
eh, to quote Spider-Man: "Everybody gets one."
Okay, fine. "Everybody gets one."
Now…no more. 😉
"Everybody gets one."
Good I haven't used mine yet.
I am mostly interested in the ps3-slim. I hope it is real. Is there a place where we can watch the conference?
"Oh, and by the way, the secret PS3 exclusive PSXE knows about is not on tap."
You're such a tease, Ben.
well at least he mentioned it before we all got in a tizzy.
Jeez, how long are they (whoever they are) going to make you sit on that info?
Hey I wonder, you know how the sales have been a bit lower last month? Could it be because of the lower stock?
Sony can never, ever surprise anyone, they need to fix their leaks.
Isnt this good for Sony? Now that rumors are spreading like wildfire, everybody will know about it. Which equals more people interested in seeing a price drop, b/c, etc. Which equals more business for Sony.
Remember when Ben first hinted at the secret game, and after about 150 posts he said someone in the comments guessed it? Does anyone have a list of those games that were guessed? I want to compare them to the list of games at this thing. We need to narrow it down and figure out what Ben's game is.
I think Ben is just secretly testing the problem solving skills of the community. We have to figure this out. We'll teach you to keep secrets, Ben.
Most people agreed on Twisted Metal .
I thought the guy said he was not making it though.
Different dev?
Let's make it a poll 🙂
Good luck. You can do what you will…but we won't be revealing the name of the game. 😉
250 quid(GBP) for a PS3 plus 2 games? That would mean that the PS3 on it's own would go at about 200 quid. I suspect that'd be the sweet-spot for selling a basic PS3 slim without a game included – especially if it happened to come with a firmware update that incorporates PS2 compatibility. Yep, that would be sweet… $299 in the USA please…
Tell you what Sony, instead of 2 bundled games, throw in an inexpensive HDMI cable, and just sell the console plus one controller for a song, and people will buy it.
I know what youre getting at, but HDMI cables can be had for so cheap, as long as you dont get conned by the big chain electronics stores. Just had to throw that out there as I cringe when I hear people paying 50-100 bucks for an HDMI cable.
110% agreed, no one should pay more than $10 for an HDMI cable, ever, unless they need a huge length of cable.
No, I was suggesting the inclusion of the HDMI cable to make the PS3 plus controller in a package with no bundled game a self contained package so that the only thing left for a consumer to buy is games or movies. The cables are cheap and you can then truthfully say "Everything you need to get started in one box…"
I'm interested to know who on this website that doesn't have a PS3 and will buy one after the pricecut Slim comes out
I got a 35' HDMI cable for $10. Woo!
it also wouldn't hurt to make the recharging cable for the controllers longer, say twice as long as the current one. I feel i'm too close to the tv when I have to charge and play 😛
@mexgeo
They do make USB extension cables; I got mine with my RB mic stand.
I agree that the pack-in cable is too short.
Also, did anybody use the pack-in ethernet cable? I already had my connection to the hub strung through the walls. Sony could save enough money there to pay for some USB plugs on the back side of the system.

Yes, the PS3 should come with a $10 HDMI cable. I did some looking around and got a 6' off of amazon for $12.
I kind of like the short USB charging cable, helps keeps things tidy without extra wire lying around while the controller is charging, but it does mean another hidden cable for when I forget to recharge it, bah, what are you gonna do.
i can't wait for all these PS3 speculation articles to go the way of the dodo as well….

Why are we so excited about a new PS3? I'll assume most of us already have a PS3 since we are part of a PS3 community (got my 60 gig the 2nd day after the PS3 launched), so does it really matter? I mean if some problem was to occur with our system, then we might want to invest in the new slim. Until then I think we should be more intrested in uncovering new exclusives and firmware updates.
I'm sick of all the "Price cut" and "PS3 Slim" rumors. How much energy and attention do we need to waste on a damn rumor?
True! But I think these articles are meant for yet-to-own PS3 folks. So I don't even comment nowadays on these articles but like I said, its NOT for us.
Btw where have you been hiding? Its a long time
I think it matters because anything that drives more unit sales of the PS3 ultimately facilitates more games being developed for the PS3, which is something all existing owners of the PS3 are interested in. While we many of us already own a PS3, and are therefore interested in firmware features, upgrades and games, a lot of us have friends and family who might be in the market for a PS3 at the right price with the right features. So even if it doesn't impact our own console buying plans, the potential price reductions and possible slim model both have a definite impact. IMHO of course…
Well I personally would like to see Sony back on top where they belong. So I hope to see a slim ps3/price cut coming up soon to help with that process.
I've been working and partying alot http://www…its been awhile since I last commented, but I've been checking PSX's mobile site everyday because I get on my blackberry during work. I see alot of new people I don't recognize, and a few of the ancient ones…HAHA!
i wish they just spit it out already. i do want to buy the slim version though.
I wish the new model has four USB ports
For what?
I'd rather 2 Blu ray drives, so if one dies, the second takes over lol.
Yes, if you have a PSEye and a set of the Singstar microphones along with a USB HDD and one USB cord for controller charging, you use up four ports. Even a USB2 hub doesn't help since you still want your USB drive or camera in a dedicated port each, and then you get into how much power can the hub deliver etc… Just put four ports on the thing for crying out loud, they're not expensive.
I see Highlander but I barely use 2 ports simultaneously, I don't have all those accessories that's why
If it wasn't expensive, don't you think they would include it? Hell I paid a premium price and is 100% happy with my purchase. 4 ports, Full BC, SD Card Slot and 60 gig harddrive.
There had to be a reason they didn't include 4 hubs now…and that reason is price.
@PS3wizard
Based on PC builds I've done, the motherboard headers for USB ports are the only expense they could trim since the USB ports themselves are served by a single controller that can handle more than two ports. I don't know why they trimmed the USB ports from four to two, to be honest. It's a fairly small cost saving in the scale of things.
…and as I just posted, put two in the rear (filthiness unintentional).
"Permanent" add-ons like the Eye, an external HDD, and PlayTV (not sure I'd include SingStar mics) scream out for a hidden connection point.
Maybe my PS3 will be my wife and I'll just keep an apartment on the side for my PS3 Slim mistress 🙂
HA.
£50 price cut? That's not much to be honest. I was hoping for a £100+ price cut. I really want to see the playstation 3 sell more units.
cmon sony
+1 for not writing "common" (not sure how that error ever got started), though you left out the apostrophe.

ARE YOU RRRRRRRREADY.
