There are any number of ways to interpret the console war, but it's always easiest to simply stick to the numbers. Sony has done just that in their latest press release, entitled "PlayStation: Your Entertainment Hub."
Sony wastes no time with the encouraging statistics: it has taken less than three years for the PlayStation 3 to have sold 24 million units worldwide, with a corresponding 190 million pieces of software. As for 2009, the machine has already enjoyed several fantastic exclusives, including Killzone 2 , MLB 09: The Show , and inFamous , and according to Metacritic data, the PS3's library "features a higher percentage of titles scoring 80 or above than any other console of its generation." Looking down the road, we can expect over 25 more exclusive titles, including Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , God of War III , Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time , MAG , Heavy Rain , ModNation Racers , and more. Oh, and you can expect more great games to be added to the Greatest Hits lineup, too.
The PlayStation Network continues to thrive as well. There are 26 million user accounts and there have been 540 million pieces of content downloaded thus far, with currently 200 downloadable games and 1500 pieces of add-on content available. We've seen exclusives like Fat Princess , Shatter , and Flower , plus the resurrection of various PS1 classics like Final Fantasy VII . A mere 6 weeks before the launch of the PSP Go, the current PSP sits at 53 million units sold worldwide and there are over 100 titles launching this fiscal year; including LittleBigPlanet PSP , Gran Turismo PSP , Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier , Dissidia: Final Fantasy , SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3 , and others. Lastly, the PS2: 139 million total systems sold, 1.4 billion (yes, billion) PS2 software units, and a current library of over 10,000 titles…all for the price of $99.
Oh, and if you didn't already know, they wanted to remind you what the PS3 offers straight out of the box that the Xbox 360 Arcade and Wii do not: Blu-Ray, connectivity with the PSP, and Wi-Fi; things like Wi-Fi, a hard drive, and full access to the online aspects cost extra if you buy the base 360. Of course, the Elite model is more comparable to the PS3, and the Wii…well, it's not comparable to anything, really. So there you have it. Another excellent update, no?
PS3 FTMFW!
PLAYSTATION 3 is the ultimate gamers dream. I love Sony since 1998 they have deliver everything i wanna so far. Sony has proven that they know gaming. PS3 is definitely is the "PlayStation: Your Entertainment Hub." so damn true. All Xbox 360 models are pure crap and yes i own 2 of them and 2 PS3 both play PS2 games 60gb and 80gb model.
From Blorge?
Well…i not sure how to say this but i guess i will just throw it out there…. i love you Playstation and Sony!
Articles like this give me wood.
I found a really big branch outside my house right after i read this article too!
ahahaha my dog has my wood in his mouth right now…he stole out of the log pile
You guys are cracking me up!
You mean like cracks in wood, right?
The ps3 and xbox are both great consoles. I personally prefer the ps3 because it is indeed a complete entertainment system. Sony has never failed me, and I will stick with them as long as I play video games.
Xbox a "great console"!?…..go on, you have my attention….
i'm getting Dissidia off of amazon for 31.99 thanks to SE, and i dowload GT PSP off the PSN for $36 thanks to walmart employee discount. in case you're confused walmart discount is 10%, now 10% of 40 (2 $20 PSN CARDS) is for $ off leaving me to pay $36 for $40 PSN credit. I'M A MAD MAN… with a plan. XD
Man I wish I was still working at Wal-Mart! *jealous*
I don't think that is a good goal.
LOL, yeah, working for minimum wage in a deadend job for a company that treats its employees like indentured servants isn't a lofty career goal just to save 10%.
Trust me, I know. My two brothers in law back in Texas work for Wal-Mart, so I know how crappy Wal-Mart is as an employer. One of them is a department manager and is making a whopping $10 an hour, but at least he gets health benefits unlike the peons who aren't management.
That is why companies like Wal-Mart lobby so hard for employees to vote down unionization, with outright lies about unionization. And if they do unionize, Wal-Mart just closes down the store and reopens it down the block! These companies are also lobbying hard to block the Employee Free Choice Act, which will make it easier for people to unionize.
who said i worked there? lol you guys are funny. lol
lol I assumed the %10 discount was the employee discount you were talking. And yes Wal-Mart is a bad place to work, but it's not minimum wage. I was making 10.60 an hour stocking grocery, it was easy. I had friends who were making 15-16 an hour who did less work than me. Also, management is arguably easy and they get paid up to $24 an hour. I guess it depends on where you work; my store was considered the best in the district so they were strict on store cleanliness. Not the dream job sure, but they offer great positions and we had a manager as young as 22.
Oh yeah Texas, that's where I work too. I can't say they treat us perfectly, but department manager is just a stepping stone for becoming an overnight manager which is where the real money is. But still, it's a lot of grinding and kissing ass you have to do to get ahead. Anyways, this is too off-topic now so I'll shut up lol.
This comment really has nothing to do with the article really, but im wondering about that secret game you can't tell us about, Ben. Any word on that or do you have to leave us hanging a bit longer?
Sorry, can't do it.
You are killing me Ben! At least there are a ton of awesome games we are allowed to know about 😉
oh yeah i almost forgot to mention i had set up a tent in my pants as well. lol
Welcome to 2006, PSXExtreme! 😛
Because 2006 was where it all started for the PS3's domination and victory in this console war!
Heck if it's one thing it's inherited from its older (but not deceased) brothers, it's its ability to win in everything it does, from entertainment, gameplay, graphics, technological advancements, and more!

Late 2006 and most of 2007 were very dark times for the PS3…
Victor,
My sarcasm sense is tingling.
@ Ben, let's just think of them as the "Trial Periods" of the PS3 ^__^
and @ Orvisman,
Sarcasm tingling ftw.
The built-in wifi is probably most overlooked.
I recently had to disconnect from the wired connection while downloading something and then realized it had wireless and it was very convenient.
The blu ray and upscaled dvd is very nice too. If only the browser didn't suck, although the 360 and wii don't even have a web browser (i think).
However, I would get a Wii just for the virtual console. I would get a 360 just for Scene It!, too. I will NEVER, ever pay to play online though, so I doubt I'll ever get a 360 unless it's less than $100.

How did you overlooked the ps3 having wi-fi? What other features have you also missed?
The wii has wifi and suprisingly a web browser. Too bad the only good use for a wii is the virtual console.
Wifi has never been important for me. I hardwire anything I will play online with.
yeah wii has a web browser
You O.K LowKey? Nasty stutter you have their. You have to purchase the browser for the WII.
Does anyone know if the Wii has a web browser?
You don't need to get Scene It.
Get Buzz! for the PS3.
I have both; and in my opinion, Buzz! is so much more enjoyable.
You have to pay for a web browser on the Wii.
Its like 1000 wii points and you only need to pay once, so it's not like cell phones where you need to pay every page.
I can't handle Sony's immense astounding never ending line up of never ending gaming evolution at it's finest! There are a few games I want to try out on the Time-Bomb360, I just don't have money to throw away on a system like that, how can anyone live with themselves buying something that won't last very long? Does that not make you a complete cretin, not even knowing the first thing about being a smart consumer?
Listen, buying a 360 doesn't make you a cretin.
I own all three consoles, and I have owned every console in every generation since the PS1. I, however, have always bought the majority of my games for Sony's consoles, except for the exclusives to the other consoles, which is why I need those consoles… yes, even the Wii.
What DOES make you a cretin, however, is constantly flouting your ignorance as you bash the PS3 (or any system) for being a horrible system when you don't own the system you are bashing, especially when you've just bought your fifth console of your favorite system because the four others have died a crimson death.
I cant believe microsoft are getting away with selling the wifi adaptors for $100. Even after the PS3 and Wii came out with wifi built in.
So if you want wifi, the 360 costs just as much as the ps3.
Yeah and also paying well over the odds for a small Hard Drive. But by the time people realise they have to spend a whole load more cash on the system they are ready stuck with the 360.
Seems reasonable since my PS3 is certainly my entertainment hub.
If not for the few timed exclusive deals they nabbed, the 360 wouldn't be doing so hot. The "features" are merely an afterthought and if you seriously tried to use 360 as an entertainment hub, you'd likely be begging for RROD. I love having the PS3 in the living room for this reason. I've played countless movies on it, and the games are entertaining enough that friends can just watch me play. When Heavy Rain hits I can almost guarantee you I will have friends/family watching it like a movie.
This is off-topic but when I think about MS nabbing FF13 and Tekken 6, I feel they have solidified the reasons many of us buy PSX in the first place.
Contrary to what you might hear from certain media outlets, the 360 isn't doing "so hot"; good but not outstanding, like the Wii (or PS2). Contingent on how many units represent re-buys, it HAS outperformed the Xbox and GameCube (not much of an Accomplishment), and will reach numbers somewhere between the N64 (32 million) and SNES (49 million), which is not bad. BTW so has the PS3. Yet, most gaming media make it sound like the 360 is killing the PS3.
I would rephrase your comment as: If not for the not-so-few timed exclusive deals M$ nabbed, the PS3 would be doing much better (despite legitimate concerns about the price–but not the value).
On topic: I agree about the PS3 as an entertainment hub; I do almost everything on mine, including posting this comment. I don't use a PC except at work. Earlier this evening, I watched episode 1 of Ashes To Ashes. I'd do even more if PlayTV, Vidzone, and the PSN video store were available in Canada.

Before you thumb me down for this comment, realize I'm a huge Sony fan who prefers the PS family of consoles.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Except that when you look at game sales, and that is all that matters to the publishers, there are very few PS3 games (multi or exclusive) populating the top 20 every month. The 360 and Wii dominate game sales every month, or at least they do on the charts I see on these game sites.
By contrast, the PS2, month in and month out, used to dominate the top 20 game sales charts with anywhere from 10-15 games in the top 20 every month.
I'm not sure exactly why I got down-voted (did you think I was pro-360 or anti-360?), but you're entitled to your opinion.
@ Orvisman
If you only look at North American charts, that's certainly the case more often than not, but overall software sales are roughly in line with hardware penetration. As I noted in a previous posting, of the top 20 multiplatform titles, 8 have sold better on PS3 than 360 and most of the others are within 75%.
The PS2 had twice as many consoles as its competitors COMBINED (and even more now); of course it had more software sales.
p.s. Despite my rebuttal, I gave you a thumbs up because your point is valid.

No kidding that PS3 is the most complete entertainment system. I use my PS3 for gaming (of course), watch movies (blu-ray, avi, mpegs, etc.), listen music (CDs, mp3s), and some photos. I really can't live without my PS3. Even my avater is a PS3 logo.

The PS3 is an astounding piece of hardware and it does not truly get the recognition it deserves within journalistic circles.
I for instance, watch TV with Play TV, stream media via my dlna server, browse the internet and view online media with the web browser, can change into a full Linux desktop environment and use it as a fully functional computer, Enjoy true HD movies with 7.1 sound with blue-ray, all that and play an ever increasing line-up of fantastic games. Quality 😀
Ps3 + Ps3 media server + PSN = all I need
I even disconnected my wii from my tv and took it to a friends house for the occassional wii sports. Life is good.
PS3 is the best and ultimate machine for me, it will be good for 10 years for me, just as Sony said.
Also I embraced every generation of Sony consoles — PSX, PS One mini, PS2 fat and slim, PSP fat and slim, PS3. (and eventually PSP Go, PS3 slim if there is one, and PS4 in the future but not now)
I wish all the best to Sony and hopefully their price cut on PS3 will not hurt them, otherwise, we will all lose in the end, period.

PS3 is a great machine… looking forward to an enhanced XMB interface and mini-application widget type support, so we can get our machine to do all manner of interesting things…
Here is looking for further firmware upgrades, better browser technology and flash support and for a more "open" system in the future.
Let us hope Sony gets more people developing on the machine with student development environments too.
