New Mortal Kombat To “Revolutionize Online Play?”

Well, now that the Mortal Kombat franchise is in the hands of Warner Bros., we probably should've figured we'd see something new.

According to a job listing found by TRMK , it seems that the next MK project will break new ground in the world of online multiplayer…as it relates to fighting games, we assume. The job description for a Senior Software Engineer at WB Games Inc. in Chicago says the aim is to boost the online play and make this title "the gold standard" for online multiplayer. That description reads as follows:

"WB Games Inc. seeks a Senior Software Engineer, Network to help us implement cutting-edge online features to ensure the Mortal Kombat franchise is an industry leader in online functionality. We are looking to position Mortal Kombat as the “gold standard” for network play, and we are looking for someone who wants to push the boundaries of what is possible with online interaction.

You will work closely with architects and designers on both the Mortal Kombat team and the advanced technology group to help design and implement functionality ranging from the core network transport layer all the way to owning the final implementation of brand-new features that will revolutionize online play."

Wanna apply? Head on over to the official listing and send in your resume, if you want to be part of the "revolutionizing." For our part, we kinda like this new direction, but it's not like they haven't gone in new directions in the past; we just recently saw Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe , which worked out very well. Now, it seems the next goal is to put a fighting game in the online community limelight, and we'll definitely keep an eye on this project.

Well I hope that they bring back mortal kombat chess with this new game. Online play I could care less about, but tha mortal kombat chess made playing against a friend a lot more fun than just straight up fighting.

They need to bring chess back and also the puzzle fighter mode (with a ton of more characters to play with). Both were wonderful add-ons

No Disney,

Under you, nothing can work.

You'll probably take out all of the blood from this game.

I'll be surprised if the game retains any of its gory/bloody themes.

Warner Bros. is not Disney.

And if they know what's good for them… they'll add more gore than ever and a co-op fighting mode.

Oh right,

All these big American "media giants" are all the same to me.

We'll see, with warner they might have a better chance to keep some dignity in MK

Uhhhhh, Midway is an American developer from Chicago so that doesnt really support your claim that there all the same, your basically saying that American developers dont do violence, which is kind of ironic since the original and most violent iterations were made by an American developer. All these "Media Giants" are what keep your theaters full and your PS3 bloody and violent like MK.

I said "media giants"

Game devs are, game devs

Games are media last time I checked. Midway is a giant studio, all that = "Media Giant"

You're both making moot points. We're missing the bigger picture here: MK is butt. Let's not pretend – with or without gore – that MK is more than 6 hit preset combos with flashy special moves. I don't hate MK, it just makes no sense to pretend it's any good after so many better fighters have raised the bar significantly.

Yeah well, you need to shut the hell up and stay out of our conversation, cause right now ur moot. It does sound like you hate MK, but yeh theyve raised the bar, but who started that bar, and left it to be raised? MK PWNS UR life.

Oh yeah, tell that bar story to Mario, how many more better side scrolling games are there now that are better then that Italian plumber? A hella lot, but Ninty is still milking his teets, granted i dont like the game, but it did pave the way for alot of platform and side scrolling games.

Indy, Your acting a tad bit like a jerk.

Your acting as if MK was the first fighting game ever. It didn't set any bars, Street Fighter II came out a year before MK1. MK only really became popular because of the excessive violence in the game. That really all it had at the time as its system was as deep as a glass of water. While they got better with every sequel up to maybe MKT (Maybe not MK3), No MK game could ever say it was the best of its genre at there times of release.

well if we are gonna go there MK wasn't even the first fighting game with fatalaties, there was a barbarian game for the comodor 64 a whole 8 years before even SF came out. I know sf doesn't have fatalaties but this barbarian game was the first fighting game.

I liked IK+. That bar was high enough for me.

IK+ was fantastic, they should bring that back, barbarian was a laugh, loved it when they kicked the head off the screen after a match.

Sorry folks Killer Instinct has no equal. It took a couple of things from the other games and made it better.

First fighting game? How about Yie Ar Kung Fu?

This is a silly argument, especially claiming that Midway is a media giant, how many new papers, magazines, News organizations, TV stations, TV Studios and Movie studios do they own? Midway is a big developer, but they do not own media companies. You can torture the argument and logically define Midway in terms of games as media. However you are literally force fitting Midway into a definition simply for the purposes of arguing.

Please stop.

Damn it! I do NOT want so much online shoved down our throats! If I want a game and pay sixty bucks I want an excellent OFFLINE mode. I get so tired of people calling everyone noobs because they are trying to learn a game. I simply can't stand the immaturity that online play brings. I love Mortal Kombat, it is probably one of my top 5 favorite franchises, but if there isn't good offline play I'm out!

Yeah I have no interest in fighting someone who has learned every single cheap ass way of winning a battle online.

How are they gonna revolutionize online play? In a fighter you go on, fight someone, and win or lose.

…as long as there's a Single Player, I'm in, otherwise, it should be a downloadable title. I suck online as it is, I don't wanna suck on one of my favorite fighting franchises.

The best fighter this gen IMO is BlazBlue. Not only did they give us the best online play I've scene in a fighting game, the single player offline modes where worth the price of the game alone.

If it live up to the new standard set by BlazBlue I welcome it.

There's ZERO DEPTH in a MK game. This is 1 scenario where you can say they are using violence to sell what is otherwise a shallow and boring game. I liked MK as a teen until I started playing better fighters like Tekken and Street Fighter Alpha. SFA in particular helped me realize that MK games are trash . Everyone plays for fatalities. The miniscule competitor circuit makes no sense because once you've played real fighters for competition, you understand how crap MK truly is.

I know I'm getting thumbed down for saying this. But please I ask anyone who does consider MK good for online play, play and learn any of the following: Tekken DR, Virtua Fighter 5, Street Fighter 4, or BlazBlue. When you get to an intermediate level, look up advanced techniques and I guarantee you, you will not feel the same about MK. Trust me, I used to be a big MK fan as a youngster, so no I'm not just trashing the game for fun. As it is, I got no problem with people playing MK for fun offline and enjoying single player conquests.

Dude, ur getting thumbs down for being ignorant, MK paved the way for alot of those games, it might be alot of senseless violence, but this series helped make fighting games what they are today. So don't hate on MK, or ill hire Scorpion to fatality your ass. If its just fun and some gore and a time killer your looking for, MK is a great tool for that job.

Byakko2009

Ignorant? I ask you to try better fighters and understand why the standards have changed. That's not to say MK can't be enjoyed, no I didn't say that. If you truly believe MK paved the way for fighting games, I think you're a MK fanboy. I'm not here to give history lessons about who did what first, that's fanboy territory.

I'm talking about (what you blindly don't seem to understand) DEPTH. Tell me what fighter uses 3D graphics but still plays like it's practically still on 2D planes? Only MK does that anymore. The last fighter to do that was probably the Rival Schools games. See I love Rival Schools for the characters and such. But I fully admit the gameplay is retarded (still better than MK) for what the standards are now. That's what I'm talking about here. If you just love MK, that's fine, but don't be a blind fanboy cause' of it.

JMO_INDY
JMO_INDY

Ha, me a fanboy? uh no. See i was just pointing out that there are alot of games out there that are better fighters, but for a simple fun game, MK is the better choice, Mario is such a good example, it still plays on the 2-D planes but yet its 3'D, people still enjoy it for the fun factor, that game is in no way deep in storyline, u save the princess, thats it. Its just a simple fun game to play. MK doms. P.S. IM NOT A FANBOY.

Tell me where I deny MK can be fun? Man calm down lol. I don't even know how Mario got into this haha. I'm talking about MK from a fighting game competitor's point of view here. If you play MK strictly for button mashing fun, I got nothing against you! Have fun. I never said you couldn't. Chill lol.

Yea what is up with 3d if all it does is rotate around and seem to stay basicly 2d. Even the mortal Kombat Vs Dc did this crap. I loved the game btw, it was fun kicking the crap out of so called ninja warriors with super heros. Still I see Byakko's point sure fans will be fans but the game needs to evolve, its falling way behind.

I know that, but Mario has been around alot longer then MK, but yet it hasnt changed, and you proved my point btw, Its just plain fun. But yes you do eventually need to evolve, but why isnt Mario getting the same lashing?

Why are we never allowed to argue, its an innocent arguement, were just comparing our thoughts about the subject at hand, if MK will ever evolve. No harm, im not angry, granted i did use ass alot, sorry about that, but none the less, argueing is good for the temper, if you hold it back, the bigger it gets later on.

See Ben? Were all cool, comments never really portray a persons emotions, o yeah the reason Mario got involved is because he represents this whole subject, all games need to evolve, some just have a classic time to them that need not really change , but all games must change.

Comments are NOT a place for arguing or even in-depth discussion. That's why we have the forums.

Furthermore, calling each other fanboys and accusing people of being ignorant most certainly goes against the policy. We really need to get all you people who like to comment a lot into the forums more…it's the proper place for this stuff.

What I would really LOVE to see is an open world Mortal Kombat. Heck it could be similar to dark cloud or even the Mario 64 style which did wonders 4 mario. You could gain lvls and new attacks. they could throw in a limit break system that used fatalitys (not sure on spelling). What do yall think?

Your typing skills are weak young one, it is spelled fatalities, you have dis-honored the MK code, FINISH HIM! haha

LOL I was close. tho I must say I typed the whole thing w/o looking at keyboard so its my spelling skills that are weak. And the multiplayer, does anyone know what to compare it to will it be similar to mk vs dc or what. CTF with fighting instead of guns or cars?

There was that action portion in MK: Armageddon.

I don't play fighting games online. I always end up play some douche that uses only one freakin' move! MK vs DC universe was a disappointment because the story was piss-poor; forget piss, it was shit. Sorry to say. The online was horrible; there were connection problems; and douche bags that couldn't play to save their lives. Worst MK game ever! Hopefully, the new MK franchise will be better 🙂

Yeah leve the super heroes to thier own games, don't crosdsove to a crazy franchise like mk, I was kinda konfuzzled when they announced mk vs. dc u. like hell, don't be killin my homeboy superman to make a buck, it's been done before but it was tastefull, unlike mk's spin off.

Maybe they'll make an online conquest mode, Where you can also run into other players and fight them. as of the game being WB and not Midway, I 'll wait and see, to be honest every MK game after MK4 never held my interest after 1 day.
