Well, now that the Mortal Kombat franchise is in the hands of Warner Bros., we probably should've figured we'd see something new.
According to a job listing found by TRMK , it seems that the next MK project will break new ground in the world of online multiplayer…as it relates to fighting games, we assume. The job description for a Senior Software Engineer at WB Games Inc. in Chicago says the aim is to boost the online play and make this title "the gold standard" for online multiplayer. That description reads as follows:
"WB Games Inc. seeks a Senior Software Engineer, Network to help us implement cutting-edge online features to ensure the Mortal Kombat franchise is an industry leader in online functionality. We are looking to position Mortal Kombat as the “gold standard” for network play, and we are looking for someone who wants to push the boundaries of what is possible with online interaction.
You will work closely with architects and designers on both the Mortal Kombat team and the advanced technology group to help design and implement functionality ranging from the core network transport layer all the way to owning the final implementation of brand-new features that will revolutionize online play."
Wanna apply? Head on over to the official listing and send in your resume, if you want to be part of the "revolutionizing." For our part, we kinda like this new direction, but it's not like they haven't gone in new directions in the past; we just recently saw Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe , which worked out very well. Now, it seems the next goal is to put a fighting game in the online community limelight, and we'll definitely keep an eye on this project.
What seems to be on everyone's mind is "Can Mortal Kombat make an iteration that stands up to the big boys this gen?"
Well, I think it's possible, they just need to focus. Some of you say MK has no depth, I personally think it needs to be stripped down. Dump the weapons, dump the extra fighting styles and give me solid special moves, an intricate fighting mechanic, multiple gory fatalities, every single past "Pit" stage and a coherent personal story for each fighter. Then it'll do just fine. I personally miss being able to kill the bastard at the end of the fight after he/she pissed me off so much.
The potential is there, but what they need to do is force you to earn fatalities. Like BlazBlue's Astral Heats, create conditions that need to be met. This way there's more incentive to play and get better. Most people I've seen play MK don't always use fatalities. But still, I think MK will just be a gory franchise. Also, when I talk about depth, I'm talking about okizemes, etc. The fighting stances/weapons were merely tacked on to give the illusion that there is depth.
Something tells me WB is selling us hype, I can't imagine what they mean by revolutionary. Seems publishers and developers really need to stop using the term so loosely to describe their games.
They should make the online similiar to MK: Deception if they were to do this. Just pure online beat 'em up games are the best way to tick anyone off.
I remember Midway making an April Fool's joke ages ago, about the 8th MK installment becoming an MMO. Or is my memory that of a goldfish? >=|
well ED give me 2 years and ill come work for ya.
but i really hope they pull off the "make your own fatality" like they were suppose to in Armageddon.
as ive said before, release a new deception game, than another shaolin monks game, than the rest can be about shreck for all i care.
– Note to W.B –
F M.K get to work on TNA IMPACT! 2 more wrestling games the better. THQ and wwe smackdown vs raw will get better if thay have more compation.
Revolutionize online play huh? Alright, the only thing I can think of that would revolutionize online play is to somehow sprinkle magic geek dust onto the 'Net and eliminate all network lag.
Unless they're doing that, it's just multi-layer bells and whistles. IMHO….
Fighter lag is the worst thing of all time.
probs not gettting this, don't like the mk series.
Why don't you revolutionize the freaking game WB? Copy everything Blazblue Calamity Trigger did, including the online, and give us all the old finishers (like friendships) that once made MK worth playing.
