Jake Gyllenhaal As The Prince Of Persia: First Official Shot

There are plenty of game-based films supposedly on the horizon – "Bioshock," another "Hitman," the third "Mortal Kombat," etc. – but perhaps the most promising is Jerry Bruckheimer's "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time."

Although we've seen paparazzi pics of Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role, this here is the first official shot from the movie, as shown over at EW.com . The action extravaganza is slated to arrive in theaters on May 28, 2010 and Gyllenhaal seems to enjoy the flashy, fun atmosphere: "I'm tired of taking myself so seriously," he said. "It's nice when a stuntman turns to you and is like, 'Actors don't normally do this.'" It seems Jake has been scaling walls, sword-fighting, and performing a variety of other tough stunts all on his own, which should at least lend another level of authenticity to the movie. Of course, these days, you'd be hard-pressed to find those sneaky stuntmen who take the place of the valuable leading men in slam-bang action flicks. Anyway, if you want to see more exclusive first looks at "Prince of Persia," feel free to pick up the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly, which is currently available on newsstands now. With a good cast and Bruckheimer in charge, we'd like to think that this movie could deliver what it promises; fans of this critically acclaimed franchise certainly deserve a good big-screen effort. I guess all we can ask at this point is, "please, don't mess it up too badly."

But does anyone else hold out some sort of irrational believe that the third MK might be halfway decent? …or is it just the nostalgia from the semi-entertaining original film kicking in?

Prince of Brokeback? All jesting aside…this is in no way an excitement for me. He was great in Donnie Darko, but action hero…he is not.

But…I won't see. That's the point. I've no interest in a movie that attempts to make Jake G. a badass. It's not believable.

Oh that's Donnie Darko?!? I've heard the name before, but couldn't think of anything he's been in.

I think this movie might turn out to be pretty good. It can't possibly be as bad as the resident evil movies.

Yeah Jake played Donnie Darko, pretty sweet movie no lie. But, again, have to emphasize, Jake's no action star/super hero-esque person. I have the same problem looking at Toby Mcquire as Spiderman, Topher Grace as Venom, Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, Ben Assfleck as DareDevil, Halle Barre as Storm (don't even get me started on that bitch), and Keanu Reeves as Neo. The list goes on and on. I just don't see it.

I agree with you on the rest of those actor/role choices, but Matt Damon as Bourne? I thought he did an awesome job, though that stems from me not reading the books..

Yeah, Damon made an awesome Jason Bourne. But, acting-wise, Matt Damon is in a league above all the rest of those "action heroes" that were mentioned, so this isn't much of a fair comparison.

It does look like he is trying to fit the role, so it might be decent. At least he is in character and trying his own stunts so that could help… Unless he is like Keanu that is.

He has obviously bulked up for the role.

Hmmm, i like this actor, good casting decision, Have to admit though, im not very keen on PoP… but still i hope they make this a good adaption, good lord knows how we need more, Silent Hill has only the only one that met its expectations (FFVII:AC doesnt count as its computer graphics.)

Well that's odd.
In the first PoP, the PoP is more in his late teens and early twenties… It looks like they're starting with the third game.
Then again, maybe they're doing the story way different…
I hope it doesn't flop. As much as I love the trilogy, I don't have high expectations for the movie.

I don't want to sound Racist or anything but does anyone else find it hard to swallow that something called Prince of PERSIA, has the main character being played by a pasty white American? At least put some fake tan on him or something…That's like Kristin Kreuk as Chun Li.(although I think she does have some chinese descent in her) There's got to be some better actors out there than this for that role. They might as well have just used Chuck Norris or Carrot Top…they're just as believable…Hell, the guy from Harold and Kumar would have made a better choice, slap a PoP wig on him and send him on his way.

Dont go dissing Chuck Norris, he will kick your ass with his three fists.lol. and btw, as much as your trying not to sound racist, you do.the person from Harold and kumar doesnt look Persian, if you watch Escape from Guantanamo Bay, he's mistaken for an Arab, not Persian. lol

What he's mistaken for wasn't my point. I was just saying that with long hair he'd look more like what people would expect for Prince of Persia instead of Jake Gyllenhal…I didn't say use him, it's just that he would have been a better choice. I know there are some good middle eastern actors out there, I just can't think of any off the top of my head.

Don't get me wrong Gyllenhal did a decent job in movies like Jarhead, and Donnie Darko…but Prince of Persia? Really?

CH1N00K
CH1N00K

You guys are still missing the point. I know there are pale skinned Persians, but would you cast them to play the lead role? NO, because when you look at the character from the video games, when you have in your mind of what the Prince of Persia would look like in real life, Jake Gyllenhal is not the first thing that comes to mind. I think you guys are focusing to much on trying to be Politically Correct that you're missing the point. If there wasn't already a set picture in people's minds of what Prince of Persia looks like, then maybe he would have been an okay choice, but that's not the case. The Prince of Persia Character as already been created, they need to try and match the actor to that character.

Pretend for a second that they decide to make a movie based on Ninja Gaiden. Now picture in your mind who you would have play as Ryu Hayabusa. Got it? Maybe Jet Li or the guy who played Liu Kang in the first Mortal Combat? Okay now let's say you see the roster of actors for this movie and you find out that Ryu is going to be played by McCauley Caulkin. Or a remake of the Lone Ranger played by Shaq, and Tonto is Billy Bob Thorton…

Now do you see what I'm getting at? I don't care where an actor is from or what color their skin is, but if they are being cast for a character that is already developed in the fans eyes, like Prince of Persia, they could have done a way better job then Jake Gyllenhal…

lol, you guys are crazy. When I first saw pics of Jake in costume last year I was amazed at how close he looked to the character's design. Google the cover of Warrior Within, he looks pretty damn close.

Could they have gone with an actor of Persian descent? Of course. Would that actor have the name recognition and public appeal of JG? Probably not. And he has acting chops to back it up, hence the casting choice. They want to put asses in the seats, so to speak.

Did people get that upset when they made the Kingpin black for the Daredevil movie? Nope, cause Michael Clarke Duncan is entirely watchable.

@CH1N00K

I think maybe you have a preconceived notion of what the character looks like in your head, that's fine, but you have to admit they could have done much much worse! I agree with Mornlithe up above that Topher Grace, while amusing, was a horrible choice for Eddie Brock/Venom. That I get. Oh and Halle Barre may have looked the part, but is a horrible actress, I don't care that she magically won an award, she blows.

persians are supposed to be rather dark skinned with blue eyes… and also their are no persians really anymore, there's not even a persia, plus this jake gyllenhall whether or not he's tan enough or whatever he just doesn't look like he'll fit the role…no offence to jake gyllenhall

What happened to the days like the 80's when action heroes looked rough or had a big build that looked like they could smash your face in. Obvious one is Arnie in his prime, he was a right rum bastard when he did his Mr Universe years, there's a documentry on him doing Mr Universe, a must watch. There were other rough looking muscle men like Stallone, Van damme (although not very good movies) Dolph Lundgren, him and Van Damme in Universal Soldier looked like they would kick you ass with one kick. You had the cops that looked bad like Bruce Willis in Die Hard. You had Kurt Russel in Escape from NY, looked rough.
We don't want nancy boys playing hard action heroes unconvincingly.

The thing with games, you are given the ability to do things that are impossible in reality. It all looks daft when its in a movie, like Wanted and their stupid curving bullets.
