PSXE is magical. Every time we do an editorial about a particular subject, a piece of news pops up elsewhere that reflects the topic. …it's starting to give us bad dreams.
Earlier this week, we told you sex in video games was here to stay . Now, Bioware has been the target of some sexual themed controversy in recent years (you may recall the whole female alien sex fiasco from Mass Effect ), and perhaps due to that fallout, they're still toying with the idea of full frontal nudity in Dragon Age: Origins . According to VideoGamer , Bioware did confirm that any sexual situations will be seen in cut-scene format only; there will be no interactive sexual gameplay segments. If you didn't already know, you'll be able to sleep with other characters in order to improve your relationships with them, but they're not sure if nudity will be included. The sex was in Mass Effect , but there was no nakedness; in regards to Origins , Bioware vice president Greg Zeschuk had this to say:
"I don't think we've worked that out yet, because we can adjust that whenever we want, right? On Mass Effect we worked extensively to figure out, how do we want to portray it? It's not oodling pixels [laughs] – sad but probably titillating, too. I think for us it's more just making sure it fits the context of what we're trying to create."
We're pretty sure he meant to say "ogling" pixels, but whatever. "Oodling" is a good word, too. Anyway, Dragon Age: Origins is slated to release for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 23, and if Bioware does opt for the controversial stuff, you can bet the self-righteous, preachy articles I referenced in my editorial will make their presences felt. Oh goody. Can't wait. 'rolling eyes'
This is an outrage ! Half that woman is missing!
Ben's just toying with half frontal nudity
Play now, My, Lord.
Ha ha! Excellent! You have wit, my friend. 😉
Anyways, I wasn't going to play this game before, now I'm REALLY not going to play it…

Sex in games is unnecessary.
but it sells though, lol
Yea some how,one might argue that games are getting realistic so things like sex will need to accompany them to make them solid but…………………
For real its not really necessary, if we want to see sex,there lot of porn flicks out there, and their getting updated everyday.Heck it takes a day to record a porn flick not years like games & movies……so maybe its not really necessary
Is death in games necessary? Are pools of blood necessary? Are gruesome action scenes necessary?
Why is sex such a hot button issue that you object to it, but few ever object to blood, gore and death in games?
Good god, are you more afraid of sex than death?
I do believe that most of the people here are afraid of sex… why would you be opposing it if you are not afraid of it and want games to become more realistic when it comes to gameplay. Such example is… Grand Theft Auto… Sims… God of War… all have contained sex in someway shape or form. GTA series… forever… Sims… Sims 1 for computer… God of War… YES! They have sex, people love sex. It does sell. Kids will want the game if it has guns, death, sex, drug, or violence. DONE.
Oh snap! TheHighlander just pwned Jawknee.
EVERYTHING in games is unnecessary.
Personally, I'd like to see more actually mature content in games (a la Max Payne 2)…and that would include nudity and sex.
I don't really care for sex mini-games, though.
I'll be damned if i was afraid of sex or it being part of video games bothered me.Sex never gets boring,video games do.Heck i might put it before games you know…
The point is…..is it really necessary? Sex fits games like GTA not all games….i mean who wants to see Cloud,Tidus,Dante,Snake in some sex scene.I mean who wants to see Sackboy going up and down LMAO!
You realize it fits the GTA protagonists more than those i mentioned, though okay i could picture Balthier scoring his next blowjob.
Whatever,sex or no sex am still playing.
@WWW
If that happened, I'd probably hurt myself laughing so much! I remember the first time I got my sackboy to slap another sackboy. myself and everyone playing/watching burst into laughter and wasted an hour with a sackboy riot. I hurt from laughing so much. I don't even want to think about how hard I'd laugh at what you're suggesting…
Round of applause for Highlander.
Sex is a form of creation. Killing or Murder is a form of destruction.
I could never understand why parents feel the need to hide something from their kids that they inevitably will be engaging in when they get older. Yet some feel that violence, such as killing, is perfectly fine for kids to watch or engage in virtually. United States has always had an issue with accepting sex as a part of human life and need to learn it is far from dirty… unless you're into coprophagia.
I would much rather my kids visit porn shops than weapon outlets.

Nynja i understand but look at this;
Parents know getting a gun isn't that easy and it takes a whole lotta balls to kill a real person,cause its considered a crime and you know your going inside for a long time or for life.As parents know their kids are aware of this, why will they have to worry too much when kids are playing violent games?
Engaging in sex on the other hand could be that easy,first of all its not a crime, getiing your lil' man into a girl's lil' woman is that easy,whole lotta prostitutes around.Now AIDS effed everything up prompting adults to be worried about youngsters engaging in unprotected sex.Reason why violence has been around for a long time opposed to sex in games.
Hope you catch my drift?
Sex and sexualtly has a stronger influence humans. There's no proof that cartoon violence makes kids and young people more interested in violence. But it is a fact that over saturation in sex cause kids to engage in it sooner. Especially young men. Watching a violent movie at a young age didn't make me want to hurt anyone. However seeing a naked female made me want to explore the subject further. Saturating children with sex at a young age steals part of their innocents. More so then seeing cartoon violence. I feel the same way about violence that goes over the line.
Sex is scared and private. Death isn't.

@Jawknee
Seriously dude, get off the gas.
Games rated M are not for kids. Just as movies rated R are not for kids. If we ran everything on the basis of how it would affect kids, we'd all still be eating Gurber baby food and watching Blues Clues.
Oh won't somebody think of the children!!
<rolls eyes>
Sorry. But this kind of thing really bugs the living crap out of me.
@ Jawknee your wifes looking at your computer isnt she? Dude look at Europe they are all doing fine and theyre exposed to sex on prime trime T.V. If "the Kids" are tought by responsible parents about reponsible sex than when they engage in it will be an exceptible time. And yes I have Kids daughters ages 9 and 4.
@ Highlander Ive seen stupid unresponsible parents getting thier kids M rated games GTA4 among others.
@www
I've got some news for you, kids will have sex whether they see it in virtual form or not. The teenage pregnancy rate didn't skyrocket as a result of a million teenagers getting their kicks playing Hot Coffee on their Xbox.
As long as people treat sex as a taboo subject that is forbidden and must remain hidden, behind the scenes and private, never to be discussed, kids will grope around for it precisely because adults try so damned hard to hide it. Kids always want to try what is forbidden. It truly is a case of the forbidden fruit tasting sweeter.
If you're worried that having a sex scene in an M rated game, or nudity in an M rated game will somehow encourage kids to have sex, I think you're barking up the wrong tree. First of all, what are kids doing with the game? That's a parenting issue. Secondly, at least if they are getting their kicks with a game, they're not getting their kicks with their girl or boy of choice.
@Deadman
Yeah, I have seen parents buying M rated games for pre-teens as well. I'm sure you'll agree when I say it's the parent's fault. It's not the developer, not the retailer and not the legislator, but the parent who has the responsibility of monitoring what their child does.

Europe isn't doing fine. They have more abortions then anyone else and they aren't replacing their population.
@jawknee
Don't get into a comparison of Europe and the US, on virtually every statistic worth mentioning relating to crime or quality of life the US will lose. Abortion in the US is more strictly limited than in many European countries (though countries like Ireland have very low rates or abortion), and has always been a hot topic with religious groups and political parties in the US. It's no wonder that the official rate is lower than in Europe. However, I wonder how many unofficial, unreported abortions there are, how many teen pregnancies, how many kids up for adoption. Seriously, this is not an argument you can win on the facts or numbers.

Highlander I didn't bring up europe and never mentioned the US. I kindly ask you not to put words in my mouth or post.
@ Jawknee you did mention Europe in response to me. I believe that Europe on a whole is very open about about sex and why not we're having it. If its in viedogames if its on T.V. if its in movies SO what. As an adult why does it bother you? I am very open about sex if you are not comfortable with it then you shouldnt be having it, sex can be much more than what religion teaches, Its not all about the procreation others happen to like it.
Okay Highlander,
check this out…
I have this 12yr old psn friend who is itching to play GTAIV because his mom won't let him, but you'll always find him playing COD4 or COD:WAW anytime i log on.
Both these games have realistic violence whiles GTAIV has sex and drugs in addition.Now the inclusion of these acts, limits a game like GTA reaching the widest audience it possibly could, though it still has a large fan base no doubt.
GTAIV is one of my favorite games this gen and all those acts don't bother me at all. But i feel for my little under-age brothers who can't get a feel of the game simply because its got sex scenes and an M or i8 rating is attached to it.
Its like everybody is playing MLB or some other sports game both young and old. Then devs all of a sudden decide to put a scene where Alex Rodriguez takes photos with some nude cheerleaders post-match, thus the game has to be rated 18 and now those under-age kids can't play? Yea i know this wouldn't be put in a sports game but am saying if those acts weren't in, the game is going to be available for all. Yea yea i know its nice to have games for the matured and games for the kids but really…
Do you blame those parents who bought GTAIV for their kids, i bet they received so much pressure from them. I mean these kids see how GTA is highly rated and their told they can't get they hands on cause its got sex scenes. I feel for them man.
Seriously if we're matured and getting laid regularly we wouldn't bother if sex wasn't part of games cause we're doing the real thing.
Games from the start was for kids but now time's changed and we have older people getting in and its not nice seeing these lil' kids missing out on great titles because of sex?
I repeat, am not saying sex shouldn't be part of video games but am saying, is it really necessary?

Deadman. I said I didnt "bring it up". And I'm very comfortable with the subject of sex just in the context of marriage and with my wife. Look, my only point is the game could still be great without the sex. Its fine if you want to be open about it, I just think it's unnecessary. Haha that's all.
Jawknee its all good sometimes its fun to argue. These are the topics that always cause discusion and controversy
Taking it to the forum…

It looks good but in truth the game looks meh
I bet it doesn't play "meh"
It will it's from EA
so is a lot of other great games
I hope you're being sarcastic.
If not: Published by EA, not developed…there's a HUGE difference.
You don't like EA? Ok I'll bite. Why?
No Alienage! Don't bite!
*whispers* Its a trap.
I'm hoping this trend of moving away from having to make every single game suitable for children continues.
I'd say it's part of computer gaming maturing and expanding as an industry. We really need to leave behind the notion that games are for kids.
at least for those who havent grown up yet….:)
i often wonder what my mid life crisis will be. or has it already happened and ive just skipped normality…..hang on a sec…;)
I hope they keep adding mature/adult rated content in games. I mean games have to grow up too, no one is gunna keep playin mario style games the rest of there lives! I grew up with Atari, NES, Master system, and would love to see more games mature with me. I don't want to be stuck playing kiddy games the rest of my days!
If it's just thrown in just to titilate, then mehhh.
But if it fits right in with the storyline, then it's fine with me.
Anyway, it shouldn't be up to the game developers to police any of their games,
that's "EXACTLY WHAT ANY GOOD PARENTS SHOULD'VE ALREADY BEEN DOING".
Indeed!
I've seen plenty of mainstream movies where the nudity and sex were thrown in to titilate and weren't necessary for the story progression but I still have no problem with it being in there.
This is probably just something they're doing to get more attention focused on them. Even if their game sucks it'll still sell. I'm moody today so to hell with all of you.
same goes ya bastard! (kidding) 😛
mmmmm…virtual bajingo
they should ask for help from some certain japanese gamese developer, "wink"
Sex scenes are ONLY appropriate if it has a noteworthy impact on the story. So that means that you should ONLY see them in Mature/Adult-only games.
In Bioware's case, they never slack on story and character development so I'm not worried about Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, or The Old Republic.
Just keep the sex scenes outta the Teen-rated games, like my JRPGs. 🙂
yeah JRPGs are just fine being packed with sexual innuendo and that's the way I like it.
@ James
JRPGs? You mean games that feature characters who call themselves Mr Driller and ask the female lead character in the game to pay with his drill – in the most innuendo laden manner possible in spite of the visual evidence that there is indeed a drill to be used?
I think some people need to mature their attitude towards sex, sexuality and nudity.
Yea, those infamous sexual innuendos would lose their effect is they were followed with actual sex scenes.
@highlander
LOL…drill. Agreed, as usual.
