The first Mortal Kombat movie wasn't a masterpiece, but at least it was semi-entertaining, and perhaps sadly, it remains one of the better game-to-movie adaptations.
Subsequent MK films didn't fare so well, but perhaps hope can spring anew with the announcement of the third movie. According to GameSpot , last month's bankruptcy court suit included the information that producer Larry Kasanoff was working on what we might call "Mortal Kombat 3." He said the "script, talent, and shooting locations" were all lined up, and now, as reported by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, we have more evidence that this movie may hit theaters some time next year. Eighth-degree black belt Chris Casamassa told the Tribune he'd be returning to his role as the original Scorpion and filming was set to begin in September. The first film only took $25 million to make (what, you couldn't tell?) and it managed to rake in $122 million in box office revenue, so it appears they're hoping to reclaim that popularity. After all, Midway could definitely use some good news these days and for the time being, they still own all the licenses to the long-running franchise. Let's just hope this movie turns out better than the recent "Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li." Besides the very cute Kristin Kreuk, that movie was basically worthless.
Those who remember the first MK movie will probably agree that the Scorpion/Johnny Cage fight was pretty sweet; it was arguably the best battle in the movie. …well, it was cool for the time, damnit.
I hope its at least as good as the first, but lets hope for a lil more. they should look into getting some MMA fighters to do the fights. just to add a lil realism to it.
1st film was great (as a kid), and looking back now, it's still one of the better 'movies based on games'. 2nd MK film was just awful…it almost made me appreciate the Street Fighter film, lol.
However, if this new film has some of the original cast (given though they may be quite old by now), it may be worth at least 1 viewing.
2nd movie retained 2 of 5 original actors, 2! The other 3 were new replacements…and Cage dies right away, wtf? lol.
In any event, more fighting less special effects (animalities…aka FAILS).
The first one was a great movie one of the few games to movies that stuck close to the game's original storylines. While the fights in MK2 was good they jammed MK3 parts of MK4 together so the story wasn't as good as the first one.
I hope they remember what made the first one good when they do this one.
I must be the only one who thinks Annihilation was hot and the fights were sick,Any hows I want them to work really hard on a very good script for MK3; to me it should be the main focus of every movie nowadays and not just cool special effects.
I liked both of them. As a 13 year old boy, I wanted to be scorpion and bang sonya blade…from both movies!
Sweet, I've been hearing about a 3rd movie for a while now, but I was sceptical if it was actually going to happen. Let's hope it's awesome. Come on, it has to be; there is so much more available now than what there was back then. Look at the new Rambo, that movie was awesome and pulled off things that couldn't be done with the other Rambos. Sadly, that couldn't improve Stallone's crap acting though. He should stick to directing and cameos, he's too old. Only Clint Eastwood can pull off being old, a good actor, and badass.

I was eight when I saw MK Annihilation and I still thought it was awful.
If there is a third movie then they should pretend the second one never happened.

The Cage Scorpion fight was pretty cool, my main character, the guy who I just "was" in MK was Scorpion. Second failed so bad I had to take a shower after watching it. If they plan on making a third I think the better route to go would be to do something completely different rather than try to continue the convoluted story that Annihilation left us with. And can we get a decent costumer this time? Rubber masks on the Barakas? Cmon let's see some effort!
I have to agree with ben, this is probobly one of the only if not THE only good game-movie adaption. this movie had some epic fighting scenes (scorpion!!!) and was just an overall enjoyable movie to watch. I just hope that they don't screw up on the third one (maybe they will have a trilogy set come out 😛 ) like most sequals these days. it's kinda sad, people think that just because a movie was good in the past that it will be good today, let's see, good examples are: Indiana jones for starters, Friday the 13th, star wars episode II, the list just goes on…
This could be at least as good as the 1rst. They should stick with what made the scorpion vs cage fight complete, fear factory. They have better songs and theres tonnes more good heavy groups now but they made a great move in the right direction there.
I still have the soundtrack to that movie, freakin epic. I think that's what made the movie great for me… cuz I didn't listen to much music at the time, but when I got that soundtrack for christmas I listened to it over and over lol
Loved the Scorpion vs. Cage battle. "Get over here!"…."Get down here!" I loled. Anyway, this movie could be ok as long as Paul Anderson isn't behind it. He did ok with the first one obviously, but I think the Resident Evil movies have proven that he's totally worthless now.
The first one was great at the time. I remember how the theater all rose and cheered once the main credit music started. The second one they could've done without. Hopefully Paul Anderson will have nothing to do with this one. Other than the first movie, Event Horizon, and the Death Race remake, there's nothing else from him that I've truly enjoyed. Though watching the Aliens beat the crap out of the Predators in the first of that series was a real treat 🙂
If they manage to make a new Mortal Kombat with blood and great gameplay and at the same time make a "good" movie, I'm so going back to Mortal Kombat!
Haven't enjoyed MK since MKII…..Super Nintendo days (the golden era)
You're saying you didn't enjoy Trilogy the most complete MK to date?
I agree with you Scarecrow
ooooooooooo yea but this time how about putting jackie chan up against that guy from unleashed.
have them be either raiden and quan chi or subzero and scorpion.
and i wish they would do another shaolin monks.
i loved that game, ive never spent so much time on 1 single game, ive never finished a game so many times 6 if i remember right.
make shaolin monks 2 than make mk deception 2 and then im happy.
the rest can be like MKVDC that was a good game, i enjoyed the mechanics and what they added like the in air combat BUT they have to bring back the style string combos.
they were the best part of MK starting in 1 fighting style than stringing it into the next than into the last.
MK use to be sort of a button masher but you had to get the timing perfect.
anyone tried to do sparky on MK deception now that was incredibly hard.
thats what MK needs a combo system that you look at and go holy …. how am i supose to do that.
o and of corse the enviromental finishers.
throwing a enemy into the fire in the infernary was so much fun.
MK needs its brutality back, and make it that you have a meter block enough attacks deal enough damage the meter builds up than you can do a brutality move.
now were talking.

that guy from unleashed?
uhhhh you mean Jet Li……
haha sweet! They had better keep the MK theme from the other movies!
I was so obsessed with that stupid techno song as a kid!!! Mo-ortal Ko-ombat!!! hehe…you know you were too!
Dude, I still have the soundtrack to Annihilation. Hope that Lambert will come back as Raiden cuz the other guy sucked. He was like a gay Raiden. Not there's anything wrong with that. Ok, there's plenty wrong with that. Here's hoping the movie turns out well. FIGHT!!!!!!!
FATALITY!
Oh man. I still remember, crystal clear, the first time i saw the trailer for MK. I almost peed my pants. I convinced my Mom to load up the van and take all my friends to go see it. Everything about that movie kicked ass, and the kid in me still thinks it's about the best VG movie to date. Haha, and the soundtrack ruled. I still have it.
Although I remember being so inconsolably disappointed with the second… I… I don't want to talk about it.
Get the original cast back, and a passably okay script that doesn't butcher the MK Universe, and I'll be on board for this. Otherwise, please oh please… just scrap it. And I swear… if any DC characters show up in this movie I'll gouge my eyes out, what a joke.
I say start from scratch and do it right. As great as the first one was they shouldn't feel compelled to have the movie follow some plot as if it were a trilogy. I mean, WHAT plot? Just give the kids what they want. Awesome fights with awesome music blaring in the background. With the occasional "Liu Kang Wins!"
TEST YOUR MIGHT!!!
lol
iliked Mk2,the sub zero and Scorpion fight was awesome, looking forward to this
Right on, that was a hot ass fight that gets overlooked b/c of people not liking the movie overall.
The only redeemable parts of the sequel were the fights with Cyrax and smoke. Cyborg ninjas= awesome.
I actually enjoyed the 1st Mortal Kombat movie, the 2nd one is just so-so. So if they are making the 3rd one, I am pretty sure I'll watch. But the funny thing is I've never play any MK games.
