“The Espionage RPG” Launches On October 6

PlayStation 3 owners may never get Mass Effect , but they will get something that may be similar: Alpha Protocol .

However, the latter is dubbed "The Espionage RPG," and Sega has explained the concept as "James Bond meets Jack Bauer meets Jason Bourne," which is immensely intriguing on all accounts. It's more "spy" than "sci-fi" in relation to Mass Effect , but there will most certainly be a deep role-playing element built around a fairly straightforward action mechanic. And now, according to Joystiq , Sega of America has announced that Alpha Protocol will launch on October 6 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It's not surprising to see such a project from Obsidian Entertainment, as they're the same guys who brought us Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Neverwinter Nights 2 . Hence, we assume they know what they're doing in this genre. You can check out our preview , too; it's a little old, but it still gives you the baseline information you desire. For RPG fans, this one should definitely be on your list this fall, especially if you're a fan of the setting.

It's just another promising title to look out for in 2009, and being a fan of RPGs, I'm actually hoping it's nothing like Mass Effect …which I hated. Sorry.

James Bond, Jack Bauer, and Jason Bourne… Not really a huge difference between those three. Even the initials are the same, JB.

But the game sounds sick, I think I may pick it up as long as the release date isn't too close to Uncharted 2.

I'm confused as to how this is an rpg. Seems more like a Splinter Cell type game.

If I open a special savings account and start donating plasma I should be able to get all the games I want this fall.

And unlike Ben, I enjoy this kind of RPG. I've been watching AP since its announcement in Game Informer.

will stick with my JRPGs — ff13, v13, WKC + the last guardian. this "Alpha something" would not even be called RPG when JRPGs flourished years ago, in fact this kinda of game might not exist at all in that era;

another "this gen specific" type of game, just like FPSs — only flourish this gen. will pass.

I"d rather play my psone rpg than any available this gen. By the way does Sony requires a credit card to fix my yellow light of death PS3. Because I don't have one.

Mass Effect was.. awful. just awful.
So I also hope this is nothing like it. I'm really not a fan of most western RPGs in general.

I predict mass issues with the PS3, a mandatory install along with a lower review score than the 360.

I side with World, Western RPGs pale in comparison to JRPGs.

You may be the only person that prefers them, but you're not alone in liking them. I love RPGs from both shores. They both have their pros/cons and to me, neither is superior to the other. That is just my opinion though.

western RPGs are just not fancy or "fantasy" enough, and characters are stiff. I dont like any one of them, not a single one to be honest.

Seeing as how there are no jrpgs these days… yeah I'm preferring the western ones.

Fallout 3, Mass Effect and Fable 2 beat the hell out of Eternal Sonata, Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean The Last Hope. That's a fact.

"beat the hell out of" is a pretty subjective and relative statement so I'm pretty sure what you stated is not a fact.

I enjoyed Eternal Sonata and Star Ocean far more than Fallout3, Mass Effect, and Fable 2.

@ Alienange

I hope I can convert myself as you did, but I simiply cannot (not that I have not tried by renting fable 1,2, mass effect, fallout3, knights of the old republic, elder scroll etc) just did not click with me.

I hear you BigBoss4ever. Still, don't get me wrong. I can't really say I prefer one over the other. I'm just playing what's out there. I can hardly wait for White Knight Chronicles and pray that it doesn't disappoint.
