“Entirely Possible” That Next Kingdom Hearts Won’t Be KHIII

For those of you begging for a Kingdom Hearts III , this news update will come as little solace. Still, we find it interesting.

First, it seems that Dissidia: Final Fantasy , the flashy fighting title for the PSP, began its life as a potential Kingdom Hearts idea. According to a recent KHInsider interview with Square-Enix director Tetsuya Nomura, the concept for having FF characters square off in a battle arena originated in the KH realm; as Nomura says:

"We made a game where characters from various FF games got together to battle, Dissidia, but that was a project we were originally thinking of using for KH. However, deciding it would be a bad idea to make Disney characters fight each other, it never materialized for KH and ended up shifting to FF. Even this time we thought that it would be difficult to bring out Disney characters and have them fight each other in multiplayer, and wondering what to do, we arrived at the idea of using Organization XIII."

Well, that's good to know. We very nearly had a fighting-based Kingdom Hearts but as it turns out, the idea shifted over to Final Fantasy instead. Now, for the update concerning a possible third installment in the KH franchise: while Nomura says he's still hard at work on Final Fantasy Versus XIII , he's beginning to hear the accumulated cries for Kingdom Hearts III . His response?

"Who knows? I already have ideas for the next installment. But since Birth by Sleep isn’t even out yet, I don’t have to think about it until awhile from now. Recently everyone kepts asking me when I’m planning on coming out with KH3. Even though I’m currently busy with Final Fantasy versus XIII, I’m also thinking that it’s almost time to start thinking about it seriously. Though it’s entirely possible that the next game in the series won’t be KH3."

Okay, so it's not the best news in the world. At the very least, KHIII would be a long ways off if it even comes into existence at all. But hey, we'll want to know about any new project Nomura works on, so we'll definitely keep you updated. In the meantime, just keep crossing your fingers and hoping…
