Sony Signed Orders To Insure A July Launch For PS3 Slim?

The rumors of the new PlayStation 3 Slim are beginning to escalate at a rapid pace, and we could stand by the ol' "if there's smoke there's fire" philosophy if we wished to be optimistic…

Yesterday, we learned from a supposedly "reliable source" that Sony was planning to drop the price of the current PS3 and bring a brand new PS3 SKU to market; a model that would be both slimmer and cheaper . Now, according to Engadget , the newest rumor says the PS3 Slim may arrive even sooner than expected. Apparently, it seems that Sony has signed manufacturing agreements with both Foxconn and Pegatron to insure the new machine will be ready for a July launch date. The second part to this rumor is just too ridiculous to accept, but we'll inform you, anyway: it says that this new PS3 Slim will be the last iteration of this generation, and a new piece of hardware designed around the new motion technology will release in 2010. The biggest problem with this rumor is obvious, as noted by Engadget- the motion tech is for the current PS3s on the market; we don't need new hardware for it, and it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to issue a new console, especially after Sony's insistent "10-year lifespan" claims.

No, we just think it's a misinterpretation of some kind; don't put any stock in that latter rumor. However, might we see a slimmer, cheaper PS3 as early as this month? Yeah, that's right, it's July 1 so…

i want a 500 GB PS3, might be expensive though. oh well, a guy can dream cant he? maybe even a deal similar to apple's deal with there mac books. Buy a 500 GB. PS3 and get a free PSP Go! that would be sweet.

Why don't you just get a 500GB hard drive instead?

newegg.com has some cheap hard drives. if you don't know how to install a drive you could probably find a pretty good guide on youtube.

I put a 500 gig in mine for less that $100. I highly recommend it. Never having to think about how much space you have left on your HD is priceless.

Why only 500GBs?
I mean, if you were to go 'BIG' why not get a Terabyte instead?
Does the PS3 even support TBs?

Whether or not it comes out soon, I dunno. I do believe its eventually going to come out. I just have to decide if I'll purchase it. I really want it, but don't need it.

That would be great I still have a few friends who are hoping for a price decrease and if they do release the slim with the lower price I know that they will get one. But like you said only time will tell since it is July.

we would have some serious evidence of the ps3 slim if it was going to be out so soon. ALOT MORE LEAKED PICTURES.

not if sony patched the leak…

hyped up security (i.e. removing worker cell phones, other mobile devices) and stuff would ensure minimal leaks…

No way this is gonna happen these orders would have had to go out at least a month and a half ago. and Sony doesn't do surprise hardware launches. They give you a ton of notice.

@Ben.

The delivery of finished product for end of July to Sony pending being sent to a seaport for shipment.
SHIPMENT of finished product to delivery distribution and sale points is 15 to 45 days after delivery date depending on where it needs to be sent giving an arrival date for CONUS on September 15th and earlier to closer geographic points like Japan.or so the delivery rumors go.

A quick check of seaships time tables for cargo delivery from Taiwan/China to CONUS shows 30 to 45 days.

Makes sense to me, sounds like he's saying that there won't be any more redesigns of the console (last iteration of the PS3) meaning there won't be any more PS3 models. And (as a separate issue harwarewise) the motion tech will be released for all systems in 2010 ("New piece of motion tech" just means those dildos). Simple.

But I doubt it's true.

Foxconn (AKA Hon Hai Precision) was up over 2% overnight because of this rumor/report.

So anybody here live near the factory since I am wondering how many PS3 Slims Hon Hai is producing.

Considering that they already announced PSP Go! and it's not in Shops for a few more months, I find myself being skeptical. If Sony were going to bring a slim system to market as early as July, why the heck(*) wouldn't they announce it at E3? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Announcing at TGS with availability from October 1, that I could believe. But July 1st? WOW, that would be a surprise.

(* – radio edit : I thought much stronger words at the time)

The same words went past my head when I looked at the rumor of the finished product delivery date being July 25 to July 30 latest for finished units on the factory floor.

And I went Tokyo Game Show since it takes close to 45 days for seashipments to CONUS.

picture yourself as a first time buyer with only 400 dollars in your pocket…

now you want a ps3.. but someone were to say "wait till july, we'll have 1 for 299 plus it's way smaller and kooler)

now picture that every consumer knows that as of june 1st-5th… that would equal to a minimum (almost zero) sell ammount for june… alot of money lost for sony… because no1's gonna pay 400 for something they can get for 300 in 30-40 sum days… you see wut i mean? in a competitive market, disclosing info like this is like putting nails in your coffin…

this kinda SH!T is already happening in gamestops all across north america… and thats just dumba$$ employees spreading bs… imagine if there was an official press release?? it would give all those dumbsh!t game media doomsayers more crap to throw… "Ps3 Dips in sales for june, a 96% decrease in sales during this month, looks like ps3's dying, and fast"

im personally content with this rumor… makes sence to me, and also, even if its not true… i have a ps3, i have amazing games, a price cut and new model really doesn't affect me… i win both ways…

@Highlander

I stated this in a post below; If the information proves to be true, they would not likely release in July. Only ship units to retailers. Probably will be an August release prior to Madden10… if rumors are true.

**Edit: Although, after thinking about it you make an interesting point. They announce PSP Go! in June for a fall release. No announcement from them about a new PS3 that is likely to come sooner?

Does smell fishy -but- the market is different. While the Slim PS3 is likely for cost reduction reasons, phasing out the old model at current price would be easier without the public being aware of a cheaper one on the way. The PSP Go! is an updated version with new features and no price cut. Announcing the PSP Go! early would not likely affect PSP sales negatively since they will be priced differently and probably are being sold at profit by now.

maybe the new hardware rumor for next year will be made specifically to promote the new motion control device because if you think about it this kind of makes sense

for example:
sony wants a shot at the casual market to combat the wii but they dont want to upset there hardcore fans,
so what do they do

they have two seperate pieces of hardware in stores
one of them is the current hardcore gaming console and the other is a wii-like-ps3

but this is just what i think

it would be dumb for Sony to make a H-core console, and a "Wii-Console" without the same capabilities of the H-core model… that would basically mean they would have a ps3, and a totally different console out… the smart way of doing things would be to bundle 1 or 2 of these weird motion remotes with a DS3 controller and the system… and make these remotes compatable with current systems… seperating the stuff into 2 systems seems to be the wrong move to me…

i think by releasing new hardware they could make a console much like the wii and price it low for all the casual gamers who cant afford a "real" ps3 or just want a party console

(in short sony is giving out choices for hardcore and casual gamers)

Gregory Freeman
Gregory Freeman

i guess that could work… having 2 seperate consoles out…

to my knowledge it would be the first company to have 2 home consoles out for/included in the same generation…

as long as they put the motion stuff on the ps3 with a kickass RPG to use it with, im happy!

Sony is very bad at keeping secrets these days, it should be an article on this site, practically all of E3 was leaked, I even remember a comment of the PSP go "possibly the worst kept secret of E3" sony needs to start doing better screening… it's kind of getting bad

They are not announcing it because they're trying to sell off their stock for the 80GB and 160GB models. Best Buy is currently running specials right now not to mention Amazon and Dell. Supply is down to about 60 days or less currently. Why would you buy a 160GB for more money when you can have a newly redesigned model that I like the look of? If you release a new smaller model it does cause confusion but at the same time it will cost them less to produce and also means either more $ in their pocket or a smaller loss depending on how much they spent on their chips. Also they're trying to stay away from the rumor because of the spoiled suprise from E3. I think the rumor is true because I commented on this before E3 from my Russian source. In the end their is only going to be 1 model known as the PS3 SLIM after the inventory is completely exhausted from the web and in the stores! If you want a FAT ONE you better hurry to the store or buy one from the internet. Next they will become rare consoles on EBAY!

it could be that they're going to start manufacturing in july to be well prepared and have a decent amount of them. but an earlier launch would be nice.

That console is way too small to have everything the current console has inside. I know the CELL is smaller now, but can it really allow for a new PS3 that's a fifth of the original size? It would have to hard-drive less too. Solid state drives cost as much as the current PS3 itself, so I don't see Sony kicking themselves in the face for that one.

I think this another mock up like the "PSP Slide," or something like the "Vii" (a Chinese Wii knockoff). And why change the PS3 logo?

I can see Sony creating a smaller PS3 with a lower price, but not something that looks like a Slim PS2 with a redesigned PS3 logo.

PS3 Slim. Sounds sexy, I may be inclined to get it if it has Backwards Compatibility with REGION FREE features. I don't see it bundled with a built in adapter due to it's "slim" nature, but if 360 owners can live with a building-brick, then I don't see why I can't.

Upgrades I'm hoping for:

MULTI-MEMORY STICK SLOTS!
BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY (480P upscale would be best, no need to further enhance it) with region free settings
FASTER BLU-RAY drive
COLORS, different vibrant colors!
"Extra" USB ports at the back for alternate features like charging your bloody headset without disturbing the two ports at the front dedicated for 2 dualshock 3 controllers.

Sony's really got to stem their all their leaks cause it's really hurting them, not to mention 1/3 of the surprises at E3 wound up being no surprise at all.

As long as unscrupulous mouths keep running like leaky faucets, it can only hurt Sony's sales, due to the fact that consumers keep hearing these rumors & then they wait, & wait, & then wait some more, before getting Sony's equipment. They should all just keep their ever flapping gums shut!

And another thought, I'm seriously wondering how much is really leaks, vs how much is Microsoft AstroTurf false Sony info everywhere?????

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

If a few well educated insiders at MS made some informed guesses and a few wild ass guesses about what Sony would and would not do, they'd probably be right at least 50% of the time. The astroturfing and spin is merely icing on their cake.

Having your media partners repeatedly run stories calling for a price cut and slating the PS3 for being too costly, and then following up with rumor and 'news' about the slim PS3 and price cut being just around the corner would seem to be a perfect combination designed to slow Sony PS3 sales…don't you think?

Jawknee

MS doing it's part to destroy the competition so were all forced to buy a crapbox. The day MS monopolizes gaming is the day I quit playing games.
