Firmware updates were very frequent in the early days of the PlayStation 3's life, but they've slowed down since. Even so, there have been several huge ones – including the update that brought Trophies – and another significant improvement may hit before Christmas.
According to VG247 , firmware update 3.0 will usher in "a completely new system" for the PS3. This evidently "huge overhaul" will feature the oft-rumored reputation system, which is described as a system that lets users "evaluate each other" in "game applications." There will also be a new API available so users can obtain other users' reputation, and a "grief reporting system" will be implemented as well. This will let you take screenshots of the offending player in question and submit it to Sony, which is kinda cool for all you virtual police officers out there. And as if that's not enough, there's more…
You will be able to download patches in the background, and simultaneous HDMI and digital optical outputting will be included. The latter is sweet and the former is helpful, although not entirely necessary. Most patches don't take long, but some do, and at least you'll now have the option of catching up on your e-mail or perusing the Store if you don't want to watch that boring download bar. All we know about update 3.0's launch estimate is that it's slated for a "pre-Christmas" release, so we'll keep our eyes open for something more exact.
Still no in-game audio messaging…
Whould also like to be able to check player cards while in a video chat.
Other than that, this update sounds good.
simultaneous HDMI and digital optical outputting should have been there from the very beginning. The PS2 could do simutaneous audio through the TV and digital optical cable. So I'm glad its coming in 3.0. it just shouldn't be an added feature, it should have been mandatory.
AHHHHH! No more team killing on COD4. NO!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait for the update 🙂
Still waiting on that Vidzone!!!! When are we gunna get it?
We have Vidzone in the UK.
Whats that? like a music video radio?
Where are "we"? We've got in the UK. Your are not missing much; unless you are into pop.
I normally listen to AOL Radio on the web browser.

All of the above are welcomed features.
But I still want private chat..
yeehhh, me too….
i'd like to be able to record gameplay w/o having to purchase cables or pc software
When i was playing the Uncharted 2: Among Theves Beta, It said something about recording Video's online that you can possibly share with your friends.
How would you take a photo of an offending player? For example, if I were playing GT5P and there was a player repeatedly cutting corners and ramming people, how would I take a photo of them? You would just see the car.
Would you not also see the user name? Sorry of my ignorance I own GT5P but have never played it online so I don't know if it displays user names like COD does for instance.
Ben,i'm not sure about this, but i have my ps3 connected to 22" hdcp samsung 226bw through an hdmi to dvi adapter, and have an toslink connected to my sony receiver, and i always assumed it was a matter of telling the ps3 of what cable to use .
example lets say you have an hdtv, and a 7.1 surround system but your reciever does not have hdmi, you would still be able to use optical for sound and hdmi for the video>….
hm.. I have a hdtv connectet via hdmi, but the sound goes to my old sony 5.1 reciever via optical cable. It all works fine now. As I understand it after the firmeware update I could use my tv to make sound at the same time?
– What is the point of that?
Yep, I don't understand that HDMI sound enhancement. I get my should via HDMI thru to telly then from telly to amp via optical. I did have optical out from the PS3 originally but I changed it 'cause it was a pain to keep using the amp remote.
@ Corak
The point would be so that you could have game audio going through the TV HDMI cable and have some other audio playing on your receiver. Currently in order the do that you have to go into the system setting s of the PS3 and tell it to switch from Optical to HDMI if you regularly use the Optical output to your receiver.
Or if you use a computer monitor without speakers, you can connect the PS3 to a different audio device.
I wonder if this has anything to do with Playstation Cloud?
That rumour was shot down. Doesn't exist.
"Most patches don't take long"
In the US maybe, in some pal regions a 100 MB file can take 15-30 mins =(
I am from Germany and normally it get about 1 MB/sec. when downloading from the PSN.
Don't worry, I'm in the US and my patches take awhile.
To me the best way to update your ps3 is "via storage media"
yeah, i (in the netherlands)usually need a long time to download patches, but that's probably just to blame on the crappy internet connection i have, not b/c i just happen to live in the PAL region
but i'll be getting a better connection soon:-)
Downloading should only be laggy due to bandwidth problems. If multiple users are on a single network, you should expect it to bog down a lot. It shouldnt matter what country you're in.
It would be nice if they added password protection for profiles, so my brother dosent go on my name and die 500 times online = .
That's a great idea dude. Or a kid doesn't fire it up and get into your collection of disturbingly graphic horror movies.
Your online ID is already password-protected, providing you don't have the auto-log-in activated.
Nonetheless, I agree that the local profiles should also have an optional password protection, for the reason that World gave.
Kinda cool, of course it could wind up like a karma game where some people just feel cool getting a bad reputation.
I haven't the slightest idea what simultaneous HDMI and digital optical outputting is for. All I know is I have HDMI and its perrrty.
this might be a bit out there… but what if the simultaneous output allowed your stereo tv and 5.1 system to work together to produce 7.1 sound.
quick, someone tell me why that can't possibly be the case.
I've got a 16mb server and I find all patches and ps store downloading incredibly fast. I'm from Canada. Got to remember tho when a big update like this comes out, everybody is downloading it and the servers get bogged down. Best to get on early in the morning or late at night, then you usually have no troubles.
I've noticed since that last 2.70 update, they must of increased the server bandwith because to be honest with you, downloading PS store content in comparison to Xbox live is much faster now. Good thing to know. I'm impressed. I can download a 300mb file on PSN in like 3 minutes. Love it.
Do you mean 2.80? I downloaded it last night (pretty sure it was 2.80, sorry if I'm wrong) the browser loads pages much faster and seems smoother in general. Pretty cool, and it wasn't even mandatory, I just stumbled upon it.
They haven't solved the browser's propensity to lock up the system, though. 🙁
I agree with Fane1024. I hate it when the browser locks up the system. Its so annoying that I just stop messing with my PS3 for a while.
Major overhaul eh? Couldn't include PS2 compatibility could it?
Games > system features
more system features = better games
Depends on the kind of game
In story driven games such things don't matter
So in since story driven games > multiplayer heavy games, the equation still stands:
Games > system features
mines hooked up to a 72'' SONY Bravia HDTV with a SONY 7.1 Surround sound Home Theater System, now it's perrrty
so umm……will u marry me?
Bravia only makes one 70 inch model, not 72 and its 20,000 bucks. Me thinks you are full of crap.
@souljah92 – It's less expensive to just buy your own.
first of all, although it's already been addressed, sony does not have a bravia model tv that is 72"
and yes, it costs a shitload of money
and i agree with JPBooch
second @ ffrulez,
what makes you think that the ps3 can't handle that resolution?
it certainly can, because even though that tv is huge, it's still only 1080p
Last edited by Qwarktast1c on 6/27/2009 1:22:37 PM
Yes a 70" TV is 1080p and only has the same number of pixels as a 23" 1080p tv. The pixels are only made larger to fill the screen. The 70" tv has a way lower pixel density than the 23", which is a bad thing.
Background downloads for patches is defiantly necessary, especially for people with slow bradband.
I read the original article at VG247 and they said that more has been told to them but they are not allowed to share that information. I can only hope that Sony will outdo themselves with the update in question. I hope they not only add more features but also make the whole thing look even more beautiful. Also, I hope that they will add a LOT of stuff that Sony fans have been asking for. It'd be a great idea to get done with everything in one go and release the minor updates that they love to do but it's important that they deliver features like cross-game voice chat, invites, party system blah blah. C'mon Sony! You are very very close!
i believe you are correct…
usually a +0.10 patch is to add a few features here and there, but you can't go to 3.00 without doing something BIG.
Debunked.
"
[Update: Sony has commented on this, and is calling nonsense on the whole thing.
"These rumors are completely untrue, nothing has been announced or confirmed for upcoming PlayStation firmware, and this is just wild speculation," Jennifer Clark, director of SCEA product publicity, told IGN"

We'll see just how reliable VG247 is. I have my doubts. This whole "we know more but ain't telling" sounds awfully suspect. They're a news site. They're allowed to leak information but not all of it? What the heck is that?
2.80 was a pretty cool update if only minor. Just not having it as a "you sit there and wait you poor sap while this mandatory install takes place" was refreshing.
