Network Update: 25 Million Users, 500 Million Content Downloads

We have ESP. The morning after posting our article, "Network Outstripping Live," Sony sent out a press release entitled, "PlayStation Network Proves Content Is King." Ironic much?

Anyway, in addition to announcing that FFVII had already been downloaded 100,000 times , Sony also revealed upcoming PS1 classic releases, including Wild ARMs 2 (which we already knew about), Mobile Light Force and Spec Ops: Stealth Patrol . There are currently more than 40 PS1 titles available for download on the PlayStation Store, and as a reminder, all of them can be played on either the PlayStation 3 or PSP. The press release further confirms some impressive numbers: 25 million registered users, 500 million pieces of content downloaded worldwide to date, 200 games, demos, and trailers, 1,900 movies, 9,000 TV shows and pieces of original content, etc. Add all this together, and you've got one stellar service that has continued to make strides with every passing week; Thursdays are always fun, aren't they? Some may argue that Live is still more popular, but the gap has closed quickly, and as the Network is still free , it seems one service definitely has the edge right now. Oh, and we can't wait for Fat Princess , which – although it has been delayed – is still set to hit this summer.

If you haven't been checking the Store for new content lately, you're definitely missing out on a slew of stuff. There's gotta be something on there for you!

Maybe sony should start calling you to find out what their next big headline is.

P.S. Tell them to remake FFVII

No, FFVII remake is NOT needed.

Squeeeenix needs to focus and get XV out, XIII = crap from what I've seen. And XIV is online.

I can remember seeing the PSN being so small with only a handful of content. Now its evolved into a real network. Hats off to Sony.

No lie, the Store was downright ugly when it first came out. I'm happy to see what they've done with it since then. More and more often I find myself spending money on downloadable content. I have to tell myself to quit it sometimes, I'm burning a hole in my wallet here!

Yes, there are plenty of good demos. Fight Night Round 4 was a pretty good demo. A bit technical for me, but rather enjoyable. There is also a demo for War Hawk, InFamous, uh, damn…I cant think of any more. Its late, Im tired. :/ I'll think of more later. But in the mean time, you should check it out man!

There are two things that Live has over PSN..

1 – Private chat
2 – 50 dollars per year.

Looks even to me.

PSN doesn't have private chat. He's talking 'bout the whole party system they have. You can talk to people who are in other games or the same one. That's so much better than PSN because you don't have to go to the XMB to chat with someone who is playing something different.

As for the $50 a year, WHA?!

I have been doing private chat for years now even before the 360 or ps3, it's called a cell phone.

That costs money everytime you do it and depends how long you can do it for.

1 – Why the hell would you want to chat with someone who isn't in your game?

2 – cell phones costs money to use… like Live.

Not if you're talking to someone on your plan =) like at&t to at&t users, it's free =) also I still don't understand why anyone would want to chat with random ppl not in your game either. but i mean you can chat with ppl in your game also, but it just seems distracting with too many voices and videos and blah blah

It is great news for Sony… I think it will continue to gain strength, and I am still hoping for a close HOME XMB experience… let us hope they can make all services more accessible quicker… I think they will as the system matures.

I downloaded the new VIDZONE to watch music videos, but I couldn't, as the content was blocked when trying to access it from Singapore. It says it is not available for my region. Only way to get around it is to use a Proxy server, a bummer to set up though.

Indeed.

This is one of the things that I really feel that Sony needs to change, and soon. The PS3 is region free. My Visa card works just as well in Japan as it does in the US. So why can I not purchase content from regions outside the US? I still have some real hopes for Vidzone, but it's definitely something that should be region free along with everything else. I know that it's probably all copyright legality, which is a pain. But for a Service like VidZone or PSN, we really need to have globally available content.

here is a little something that also drives the point home….. BUILT IN WI-FI!!!!

who in the hell wants to pay $80+ for a dinky little thing that gives you wi-fi for a console that doesn't even have a web browser?!?!?

which bring to question the price point of ps3
if people say the price is too high, well look at what you get…. FREE online service with built in wi-fi

that my friends is a real value

PSN is a great service, but is not recognized for its ‘awesomeness’ (lol), due to the popularity of Live. PSN is seen more as a vassal of XBL by the gaming community, because Live has been in existence far longer than predecessor. It is insinuated that Live is better because it has had time, a lot of time, to improve and mature. PSN is still in its early stages, but is growing rapidly. It is still felt that PSN is XBL's subordinate; and people are ignorant, or at least not willing to accept the fact that PSN is becoming better and better every Thursday (lol once again).
I have been noticing that Sony has been keeping up with MS lately: MS brings more arcade games- Sony brings more PS1 classics; MS brings motion tech- Sony brings motion tech; MS brings Netflix- Sony brings the movie store; MS brings Facebook- Sony brings Playstation Cloud. Sony, in a sense, has a "role-model". They can look at MS and integrate certain features from them into their own system- an addendum to their exclusive features- free online (yah!). I plan on seeing PSN on the same eye level as Live someday, but it will of course take time.

Since the PS3 has a real web browser, Facebook, Twitter, Hulu and YouTube are already 'features' of the PS3 and don't require anything to add them.

Yes that is true, but the ps3’s browser is not like a computer's browser. It is meager in some ways. Personally, (and I am sure others share this same opinion) I rather use a computer’s browser than the ps3's browser because it is more convenient and more conventional. I am sure Sony knows this, that's why they are integrating Playstation Cloud, because it will be an upgraded version of the ps3’s browser. I am not bashing the ps3's browser, but I am saying that people prefer to use their PC for things of that nature.

Big Kudos to Sony for PSN.

If I could be bothered I'd go dig up a few articles where various MS people were quoted saying that PSN would never do this, or that or have this or that number of users or features, not to mention all the times it was stated that Home would fail. I'd love to make some of the talking heads eat some humble pie, but they won't.

I always remember how Microsoft at one point categorically stated that you didn't need 1080p for gaming – fast forward to the Microsoft inclusion of HDMI for 1080p output on the Xbox360. I seem to remember they also said that there would be no games that ran in 1080p, and of course they were wrong there too.

Ah, but as this PSN feature shows, some throw words and lies, and others lead by example with deeds.

highlander i know you're a tech wiz from reading your posts, so can you answer a question i have?

why is it that alot of ps3 games only run at 720p or 1080i? does the ps3 automaticly upscale the vid to 1080p either way?

cause i notice how MS always goes on about how 'all' their games run at 1080p and all that hoo-hah

then i notice that ps3 games are only programmed, according to the devs, to output at 720p or 1080i (for instance KZ2, ratchet and clank, etc.)

whats the deal?

@Quarktast1c

360 games are not rendered at 1080p (I'm not sure that there are any that do), they almost all render at 720p (or lower) and the built in hardware video scaler, upscales to 1080p. The 360 can output a 1080p signal, but the actual image is a scaled 720p. Which is no more than what your 1080p TV will do with a 720p video feed. In other words, Microsoft are stretching the truth.

For PS3, most games render at 720p (though some now render to 1080i or 1080p as well). However in most cases games render the 720p resolution and the TV will auto scale to 1080i and 1080p as needed. PS3 also contains a hardware scaler that can upscale the image as needed. Sony gave devs access to it in early 2007. Devs of more recent games – such as KZ2 – have therefor had more options, and games can effectively render at resolutions that can scale easily to 1080i/1080p, with the hardware scaler automatically scaling up to 1080p or down to 720p as desired. But this is dependent on the developer, the user cannot tell the PS3 to autoscale games to 1080p.

At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter. All HDTVs contain video scaling hardware. The physical resolution of a 720p TV is 1366×768, but 720p resolution is 1280×720, so the image is scaled to fit the screen. 1080i input is similarly scaled to fit the 1366×768 resolution. A 1080p TV scales all video inputs except 1080p because 1080p TVs have a physical resolution that matches 1080p (1920×1080).

Remember that 1080i is interlaced, so you effectively get fewer frames per second (30 not 60), even though 1080i theoretically has better resolution, for fast moving images (games) 720p will look better.

You know what would love to see, put it will probably never happen. Us a Sony supporters must just stop paying attention and comparing to M$. Just stop caring what they do and don't do. Stop giving the time off day…. Imagine how that will F**** them off? All the fanboys raging and raging with no reply whatsoever.

The fact of the matter is we have nothing to prove to those idiot or M$ for that matter… We have what we want and we get the games we want… I don't need to convince myself I'm happy with what I get, it's been proven time and time again….

I would love to see that day, but unfortunately MS and the fanboys get under our skin and it's a natural reaction to go back at them. Would be cool if we could just bite or tongue and leave them with no response just silence….(I kill you)…. *( hahaha…sorry that just came out of nowhere)

Anyway. Big up to Sony it's really good to see how far they've come since 2006. I was worried back then, but I had faith in them, and they delivered on every front they said they would. I'm no longer worried, but rather excited and looking forward to what they do next…

Just wondering, but do they have stats on the type of downloads? Like how many of them are from free items or is that only purchased items? Because free makes a huge impact, not saying this makes it any less as amazing and such, but if you think about it that means each person has dl'd 20 things (averaged), so how much of that is free and purchased? it's just something i'd like to know, that's all

Cool with me, Europe and Japan already know which of the two is the true next-gen console. And the most reliable.

In time the US will make the shift. Unless teenagers become the majority in gaming.
