2K/Apogee Court Filings Reveal The Name, “Duke Begins”

Okay, so we know that Duke Nukem Forever is dead and buried (unless another developer or publisher wants to snap it up), and Apogee Software is still planning to release the trilogy of handheld Duke titles on the PSP. But of course, it doesn't end there.

Take-Two Interactive/2K Games and Apogee are currently battling over the DNF fallout; Take-Two is attempting to retrieve the loans they paid to Apogee for the production of DNF, but Apogee has a deal for them… According to GamePolitics , the publisher and developer have entered into an agreement that lets 2K design and produce a new title: Duke Begins . The document makes it clear that this is not the same project as DNF, despite the coincidence that all development on the game was halted by 2K back in April. Apparently, Duke Begins was set to be released in "mid-2010," but Apogee says 2K canceled the project "without their consent." Now, they claim the publisher is trying to get the developer to sell the rights to the Duke franchise for less than they're worth. We're not 100% clear on all the legal intricacies of this litigation tug-of-war, but we are certainly interested in whatever this "Duke Begins" project is…if it's not DNF, is it for another platform? We already know about the PSP titles so it can't be set for that, although as DNF may never have come to the PS3, maybe "Begins" was a PS3 exclusive…? Yeah, probably too much to hope for.

But the saga definitely continues, and that's enough for now. If we can't have Duke on our TVs, we can at least have him in the news, right?

Incredible, companies will do whatever it takes to make a deal; no matter who is destroyed along the way… I do hope Duke can live on; for a while yet! Go get'em Duke!

Anyone seeing a "Batman" pattern here, there was both Batman Forever, and Batman Begins as films. Kinda weird.

For a Duke Nukem game to work, for it to survive and capture the mood of the original, it needs to be different from all the rest.

Above all Duke has to preserve the cheesy action hero, sardonic, self-depricating humor that the original had. Duke has to be something of an anti-hero too, he's not supposed to be all heroic, more of a flawed hero than anything else.

The graphics have to be a little over the top, politically incorrect. You know the kind of thing, over-endowed pole dancers, pig-faced cops, that kind of thing. The original game really did ham it up in as many ways as possible, and that is what would make a prequel game work today – IMHO.

I think they also need to be careful not to go for a gritty, realistic look. The more realistic the graphics, the less effective the game will be. So they almost need to design the game with a more cartoon-like style. That way the art can maintain the over the top-ness without falling foul of being too real.

The action has to be straight forward action, not the kind of action that has a character slicing an opponent in two with a blade only to see all the chunky bits inside slide out – lovely image eh? That kind of gore is pointless and has no real need or place in a Duke game. That's not to say there should be no blood, this is a shooter after all.

I just have a feeling that this could be just another by the numbers lone hero against the world of mutants shooter. It shouldn't be, there is an opportunity to do something different, I hope they take it.
