MAG Beta Set For This Summer, Possibly Next Month?

If there's one beta test you want to be a part of this year, it's the one for MAG . This innovative war shooter will allow up to 256 players at once to do battle, and you can imagine just how eye-opening even a test session could be…

We know the beta is coming but we don't have an exact date. However, it seems that TheGamerAccess has received word that the much-anticipated beta test for MAG will begin some time "this summer." It will be a public beta, but there are no specifics at this time. Still, they need to find a way to distribute the beta codes, and we'll be very interested to see how Zipper plans to let in the lucky testers. Maybe they'll do something like they did with the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta; beta codes were given away in select copies of inFamous . The only problem with this is that we can't think of a high-profile PlayStation 3 exclusive coming out within the next month or two that might include a code for the MAG beta. Of course, that's hardly the only way to hand out codes, but it's the first thing that came to mind. Beyond this, there seems to be a chance that this test may actually begin as early as next month, which means we may be only weeks away…

MAG is bound to be one of the biggest releases of the year, and if you don't want to at least see it via the beta test, there be something wrong with you.

Yes! i am so excited for this, although the graphics are not the best the gameplay will no doubt be top notch. I only hope that it will beat Modern Warfare 2's Multiplayer…

Can we just get emails from Sony like we did with the Resistance 2 Beta? That was the last one I was in and I wanna roll with the big boys again! We pay for games not betas.

Anyone know if MAG includes land/air vehicles? As a foot-soldier I have an extremely short lifespan… 😉

Yeah and you can fly supply planes (equipped with guns) that can carry your team mates and bring the Spawn point team.

Now THAT is cool! Thanks for the heads-up, BANKY A!

I'm picturing that scene in "Apocalypse Now", Ben saying "I love the smell of a good review in the morning!", then the group of choppers is swooping in, orchestra music blaring, all of 'em full'a PSXextreme readers…it's…it's…just a touching moment.

(a single tear starts to well)

Well, guess it's back to head-splatterin' in Killzone 2!

I was pretty meh about this since I really don't care for FPS but when I learned I could be a door gunner on a helicopter that brings in respawns every two minutes or so I was like, 'yeah, I could totally sit in a door and shoot people, totally!' so I will be your door gunner when you get the game.

I've heard that there will be no subscription charges for it, which is always a win!

I think they should get people signing up on a website for the codes, just to make it fair, i mean they should have plenty of spaces 😎 haha

I skipped out on the Uncharted 2 beta because I wanna have a fresh experience when the game comes out–might do the same with MAG! on the downside, I will get destroyed by the people who have already played the game…

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but I can't help but think that a 256-person battle will result in serious lag and/or frequent game crashes. I really want MAG to live up to expectations, but I'll be skeptical right up until I play it for the first time.

Def. would like to be in the beta for this. But if I'm not, I'm still getting this when it comes out. Can't wait to battle with 256 people.

It seems like a lot of people are really skeptical and pessimistic about this game because they think it will be a laggy fragfest. But I have faith in Zipper, they really pioneered online FPS's on the PS2 with Socom, so I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt with their first foray into the FPS genre on the PS3.

Its like people hate on this game simply because its doing something new. But isn't it a good thing for us gamers that there are still developers out there willing to take risks with new IP's and groundbreaking concepts?

I've read comments from people on other forums who say things like "8 on 8 is perfect, why would I want to play against 255 other people". Personally, one of the things I love about video games is watching their progression over the years. No other form of entertainment has evolved so quickly in say, thirty years, so when I see a game like MAG, which embodies that evolution, and then I think about Pong, I can't help but be astounded by the pace of progress in this medium I love.

@SneakyBeaver,
I found you some information on how the servers, and the 256 player's action is going to work…….

The game will utilize a new server architecture to support online battles with up to 256 players, with users divided into 8-player squads, with 4 squads forming a platoon, and 4 platoons forming a company.
Each squad will be led by a player who has advanced through the game's ranking system.
Character statistics and development will also increase with frequent gameplay. The players most advanced in rank will be able to either direct the battle or participate directly in combat.

Basic battles will take place within ongoing, faction-based campaigns to encourage the player to actively play.

The game will contain three factions:
S.V.E.R (pronounced Sever), a group of war torn countries;
Raven, a futuristic group who wear black armor and sport high-tech weaponry; and
Valor, a military force with gear similar to the US army.

The game's E3 unveiling trailer featured large landscapes, tactics such as air strikes and parachuting, and a variety of vehicles, from tanks and APCs to airplanes.
The game will boast complete ground up class creating, with weapon attachments, and perks such as explosives.

Also, players will be able to customize their characters including face, voice, and armor . The game will be a first-person shooter.
