GameStop White Knight Chronicles Release Date: March 1

While some of you were hoping to sit down and play White Knight Chronicles this year, we have more evidence that it simply won't happen.

During E3, we heard the promising PlayStation 3 exclusive RPG wouldn't release until Q1 2010 and now, GameStop has a new date for the game in their database: March 1, 2010. Now, you may say that's just a placeholder date – and it may be exactly that – but GameStop's launch dates aren't always out of whack. Take God of War III , for example: it has been listed in the retailer's computer as having a March 2010 release date for a looooong time…through all the rumors it might come out this year, through all the rumors that it might release earlier in 2010, that date never wavered. And lo and behold, at the end of that bad-ass gameplay demonstration at E3, it was revealed that GoWIII would indeed launch in March 2010. We don't like GameStop very much (sorry, not big fans), but you have to admit, some early dates they have are surprisingly accurate. And March does coincide with the Q1 2010 estimate given at E3, so we figure you should probably just accept it. Of course, if this is the case, the two games mentioned here would have to go head-to-head, and if so, we feel sorry for WKC.

But really, just get both, people. Just do it. The games are so different in just about every way; you know you'll want the best of both worlds.

They say patience is a virtue…but obviously people who say that haven't played GoW I & II nor have they seen the previews for WKC. lol. In any event, 2010 is looking very good.

I agree 2010 is looking great. I hope they either bump it forward or behind a month or two though. I'm really looking forward to both games, but I think most people will pick GOW 3 over WKC if they go head to head. WKC deserves it's own month.

Well, sounds like they should have at least a month or two lead on FFXIII in the states, but it still seems like they're releasing it awfully close to that title…

FFXIII still interests me more then this game. It looks interesting but the character models look cheap to me.

Man! All these good games coming and I may be joining the USN or USCG so I won't be able to really play them…. Maybe I should just try to go back to school instead.

Why is it taking so long to bring this game over?

TheHighlander

I was wondering that too. There must be a ton of voicing in it…did some research…

They are giving the game a bit of an overhaul for the non-Japan release. It's getting a town builder, and all the extra mission DLC that's been release in Japan will be on the disc for the western release. I also read that they are trying to incorporate voice chat in the game, and apparently it will support cross region play, at least including NA and Europe.

I believe that they are nearly complete with respect to translating the core game, and I would guess that they have to do the translations on the mission DLC now as well, all that will have to be voiced.

It kinda sounds like we'll be seeing an enhanced version of the game ere when it launches. I wouldn't be surprised if they also launch an 'Ultimate Edition' style pack in Japan to incorporate all the improvements on Disc there as well (though I bet where possible t's patched via downloads.

Anyway, It sounds like the delay is due to extensive localization and enhancement.

Hmm, they want to compete with FFXIII and FFXIV? That's not such a great idea. I want to play WKC as bad as the next person, but when the options are there and you can only pick one. Which one will it be?

Final Fantasy of course.

I really hope that they don't go up against FFXIII. A lot of poeple will buy FFXIII regardless of it's actual quality, and as a result any similar game released during the FFXIII launch window will suffer horrible sales.

LimitedVertigo

Ah yes, I remember reading about that as well. I guess I still have a gripe though. I would much rather have them simply release the game sooner and offer all those extras as free DLC.

I can answer that question before you finish it. WKC by light years.

My PS3 died today 🙁
Wow, no WKC until 2010? (If that's true) That's hard to believe, I thought it woulda been out already but um.. oh well, doesn't look like I'll have a PS3 anytime soon anyways. Mine is blinking red as of this morning. Tried everything I could think of and read a bunch of posts online about the issue. Finally I sent Sony an email and am hoping for something back within a couple days. Have a feeling it's going to cost me too much that I won't be able to afford it 😛 Had the system for 1 year and about 6 months (80gb model with b/c) stupid thing.

Okay, I'm done… umm… I've been looking forward to WKC for a very long time and It would be nice to play it before the year is over.

Mine died a few weeks back. $149 USD for Sony to repair if it's out of warranty. There's also no guarantee you'll get your machine back – could be a refurb unit.

TheHighlander

@Oliver,

It's true you don't get your original system back, but it should be the same model of machine. Right? Even if it is a refurb.

Also, you definitely want to clarify with Sony what to do if you have already replaced your HDD with a larger drive. I'm not 100% sure what they do in those cases.

Nynja
Nynja

This has happened to me several times. If you can, try to remove any disc from the drive. If not, a form you fill out will have an area where you can specify what game (or movie) was left in the system and it will be returned.

As for the HDD, I have also installed a larger drive and was told to remove it. Since I still had my old 60GB HDD, I reinstalled hoping to get a new drive with my replacement PS3 (which I did get).

I hope you were able to backup your PS3 game saves to something other than your HDD. Unfortunately you will not be able to retain the data. The PS3 will want to format the drive before allowing you to use it. Best thing to do is to transfer the files to your computer, run the format on the PS3 then copy them back over. It's a pain, but not nearly as much as losing your game saves.

@Highlander
Oh yeah, I made it clear to SCEA that I wanted the 60GB model. It was very important to me. They guaranteed that I would, and I did.

@TheHighlander,

Correct – you are supposed to back get the same model you sent in – it just may or may not be your unit (I haven't gotten mine back yet and I've read conflicting reports about this on the web). The instruction sheet in the box they sent me claimed they were going to repair and return my unit, but we'll see.

As for HDD upgrades – you're supposed to send them the unit with it's original hardware. There's no place on the form for giving the repair depot special instructions.

@Oliver;

Wait, your PS3 died a few weeks back and you still haven't received a replacement?

How long ago did you send it in? It took the lesser half of two weeks for mine.

@Nynja,

I waited until after E3 to send mine in. If Sony had dropped the price I was just going to buy a new one.

Thanks for the comments guys. I've sent Sony an email through their website and they say I should have a response back within 48 hours. We'll see. Umm… I'm sure they'll give me instructions but do you think I should just take my HDD out then? and send the ps3 away like that? and I live in Canada >< So am I looking to pay something like $200 all together? Probably eh? Hmm …damn. I'm not "too" upset because I've had it for a year and a half, and my ps2 did the same thing so it's just my luck heh. I'm also not too worried about losing my saved files so much (maybe my fallout3 file, but that's about it really) I know I keep all my trophy data and friends list, so no big deal ..but, I did have the entire season 5 of Lost in HD on there 🙁 so even if I keep the hdd, no way to keep that stuff? or ..only if I hook the hdd up to a laptop or something?

@Zemus

My PS3 got fried in early march. Here are some tips/info:

-If you didn't back-up your data…its GONE.
-Sony replaces your Original PS3 SKU with a same refurbed SKU. (If u bought a launch PS3, you get a launch PS3).
-Took me about a week to get mine back, after sending it out.
-Also, if you've upgraded your HDD; tell them. U will be instructed to remove and keep it.
-When you get your PS3 back, be prepared to reinstall EVERYTHING: Game Data, PS3 firmware updates, Game updates, Downloadable games, etc.

That's about all I can think of. I lost about 2 months of game data, because that was the last time I did a back-up. Good luck.

Mine had the blinking red then constant yellow light, meaning it was dead. YLOD… the yellow light of death. I got mine replaced for free which I hear they wont do outside europe.

I had the launch 60GB and they ruturned a different ps3 but the same SKU refurbished but I did notice that the fan was louder than normal on this one but not unbearable like the 360.

I also lost all my data and I had no way to back it up. Couldnt turn on Ps3, if i tried putting the hard drive into a different ps3 I heard it wouldnt be recognised so didnt bother trying, so back up your data if you can.

And also ring Sony instead of emailing them, its much faster.

Uncharted 2
Ratchet and Clank
MAG
Probably GT5

I know that there are others, but I am having a minor brain fritz today, someone else will have to fill out the list of exclusives for the remainder of 2009.

SaintX

Well uncharted 2 and ratchet and clank is a confirm buy for me. As for GT5, not too sure it will even be released this year since Sony and PD wanna give all the limelight to GTPSP when it releases this fall around the same time as the PSP GO. As for MAG, i will probably wait till after it releases and see it for myself whether its fun or not. Lol, I have been concentrating so much on PS3 exlusive games that I just couldnt be bothered to waste my time looking for any other multiplat games. Who can blame me, since PS3 exclusives are just too darn good. Well, to be honest, no multiplat games has caught my eyes so far.

You're making a great point about Gran Turismo on the PSP Go!.

I'm thinking that they may bring the slim PS3 model late this year – November/December and launch it with a new price, great fanfare, and of course Gran Turismo. What better game to make a re-launch of PS3 with? That's why I think GT5 on PS3 will hit the streets in 2009, in Japan at least.

Yea, I totally agree with you regarding the PS3 slim and the inevitable price cut. I think the PS3 slim now has quite a strong possibility of existing and what better way to introduce it than having a $100 price cut to go along with it. If Sony and PD do decide to release GT5 along with the slim and the price cut, then with that 3 combos right there, is gonna blow away every single Sony/GT fan. And hell, looking at those NPD numbers of the PS3 for the next few months will be god damn satisfying. I'll be sure to drop a comment saying, "It's About Time!"

I guess there isn't much to buy this 2009. Well for me anyway. Looks like Uncharted 2 will be my only sure buy. But maybe I'll get demon's soul and Fat princess. But I was so looking forward to WKC and Heavy Rain. *sigh*

To hell with it,I don't even want it now.This is why RPGs are not successful outside of Japan.There is no reason why the West has to wait to get this game over a year after it's original release.GOW3 comes out in March and I won't even pay WKC any attention.The game looked like it took a downgrade anyway and this announcement just broke the camel's back for me.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander
14 years ago

Say what? That makes no sense whatsoever. All Japanese RPGs have to go through extensive localization, they all have delays associated with the localization. Why would the delay mean that the game fails?

How does the game look like a downgrade? It's a brand new game, not a sequel, how is it a downgrade? Good grief you're an impatient person, so impatient that you're essentially saying you won't buy it because they took so long localizing it. Is that really what you're saying? Really? I mean, really?

why would you feel sorry for them though? your in the minority. WKC will probably do well but i think its safe to assume FFXIII and GoW3 will do much better. We still dont know FFXIII exact release date but i think it would be wiser not to release WKC so close to FFXIII. No need to feel sorry for the others when they will most deffinantly sell better.

Well, maybe the date will change. Kind of hoped I'd have an RPG to play this fall. Hopefully, PS3 Tales Of Vesperia will arrive by then.

I'm playing Tales Of Symphonia: DotNW on the Wii to sate my RPG fix. I know Ben and Arnold aren't fans of the Wii but I find it to be a great change of pace.

I think it will release early enough to grab some gusto from FFXIII because people still want their JRPGs and "Spring 2010" for a FFXIII release is pretty loose and likely means as late in spring as possible. For JRPG fans I wouldn't say this is even "going up against" GOWIII, I want Kratos as much as anyone but I'd be willing to play an RPG, and wait a month to find GOW on amazon for 10-20 bucks less.

Jawknee
Jawknee

They arent bad, they just look a bit generic. i dont know. After seeing FFXIII and character models like Old Snake. they arent very detailed. they remind me of last gen RPGs.

coverton341
coverton341

I like the character models personally. I like the JRPG feel of them. The character models in FFXIII seem to take a different approach and while they are stellar it pulls away from that older real JRPG feeling and that is what I am really looking for. As for comparing these to Snake, again case in point, Snake is not in any way a JRPG character and as such should not resemble one and JRPG characters should not resemble him, and I suppose that is the issue that I have with FFXIII character models though I will still play the f**k out of that game as well. BUT WHAT I REALLY WANT IS FFvXIII. NAO!

Jawknee
Jawknee
14 years ago

i guess its not fair to compare it to Snake. I dont know, Final Fantasy has always been the standard for me when it comes the JRPGs. The amount of detail that goes into them. I suppose thats why WKC looks a bit generic to me. Ill still be buying this game though.

For me Xenosaga 1 and 3 represent the JRPG genre perfectly, both in terms of character design, battle system and game mechanics.

If there is one disappointment with the current wave of JRPGs such as Cross Edge it's that they haven't taken advantage of the PS3 to render their characters in 3D. Of course, I'm well aware that the 2D sprites of games like Cross Edge are a particular style of game. However I can't help but wish that they'd been rendered more fully.
