Sony’s Motion Sensing Tech Can Extend To Most “Any Game”

It's hardly surprising to see all the big Sony executives in the news so soon after E3; they've still got a lot to talk about.

As for our host at Sony's E3 press conference, SCEA president Jack Tretton, he spoke more about the potential of their awesome new motion sensing technology. In an interview with CNBC , Tretton first spoke about the PSP Go and its comparisons to the iPhone ("we're a game system," he said), and then Tretton made a surprising comment concerning their new motion controller:

"Personally, it’s very difficult for me to perceive ‘God of War 3’ being played with the Wii controller. It’s a different experience that doesn’t lend itself to certain types of games. [But] I think our [motion] controller can be used with every game that’s on the system now — and every game we’re working on."

This could also mean that current games may be updated at a later date to support the new motion sensing technology, and that's an intriguing idea. From what we saw at the conference, the potential of that controller does seem almost limitless, even if we're not the biggest fans of motion sensing. Can you imagine using something like that with God of War III …? Oh, and Tretton did talk about the possibility of a price cut for the PlayStation 3, but he said quite simply that they "won't be pressured." He added:

"I can’t remember a day that people who have no stake in the profitability of our company have not called for a price cut. I think everybody but us would love to see it given away for free."

Okay, we'll admit it; we can laugh at ourselves as journalists. From his standpoint, it must really seem like there's a continual, never-ending outcry for a sales cut on every last PlayStation console since the original launched almost 14 years ago. Well, guess that's just the nature of the business.

I guess they can update the motion controls with games like RE5 or maybe the bowling game.I don't think thought any GOW fan would ever consider using anything but the DS3,using anything else would be blasphemy.

He's a hothead and reminds me of my ex gf's dad. He is fake as hell. I wish Sony would get someone else to do their E3 presentations. He try's to be hip but fails miserably.

I really like Tretton too he seems like he isn't afraid to tell people whats what I hate that MS guy, and no not just cause he is with MS. Anyway, out of all the motion announcements I think sony has the edge cause I think theirs is the most versital I could care less about facial recognition. And I would really like an Oblivion styled game using these controlers.

@Vertigo – Tretton is the s*it! He's funny and doesn't act like a big boss. Always very composed.

I think it's just you hating on your ex's dad.

You're way off on this one.

I don't like Tretton Neither.
I liked Phil Harrison more, but that is most likely because I don't like change.

The only change I like is change in technogoly, like the PS4, or the super-duper-ultra-powered-portable-personal-computer.

I wonder whether the motion sensing controller and firmware enhancements allow certain motions to be translated into standard controller input, that way games might not even need to be modified…

This is years away from being practical. I'm fine with 4 key buttons.

***WHAT A CALL*** Damn that was the nicest call i ever experienced in my whole life…. and i have heard a lot of other "nice calls", most of the time flowing out of my mouth like how a stream flows into larger rivers, and eventually becoming what is 70% of the surface of planet Earth.

I just hope there aren't stupid little gimmicky products that come out for these controllers…like the racket or golf club you put the wii motes in….LAME!

@Jackknifezero.
I believe the Sonymote is all those things, but within it's very self, not with gimmick add-on's like the Wii fits over their mote.

It's just in the games themselves on your TV, where we will see tennis rackets, golf clubs, baseball bats, bows & arrows, paint brushes, pencils, etc.

And what other innovative things Sony can also "WOW" us all with in the very near future too.

seems nice for sony to try cash in on the gimick,so long as it remains optional, unlike the wii…

That isn't a controller. It's a remote.

Its a remote until you turn it sideways the its a controller great for all the classic NES games like Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, and Punch Out.

I prefer my controller as well. But I know I would enjoy some motion controls on certain games. I never got into the Wii-mote because it wasn't 1:1, it never really felt like it mattered how I moved the stupid thing.

Current games will NEVER be patched to work with Sony's motion controller. They won't even patch trophies into their old games, you think they'll patch them for motion controls? Never. It's more likely going to be what TheHighlander said.

HEY BEN You completely forgot to add "Hmm…could this mean…we COULD POSSIBLY SEE THIS TECHNOLOGY USED IN KINGDOM HEARTS III?!?!?!"

LOL

Or better yet…FF Versus XIII. Oh god now I'm just spoiling myself with all these ideas.

I hope they include all the current DS3 buttons along with the analogs. That way it truly WILL work with every game that is out now and later.

And oh yeah, you can't forget the rumble feature 🙂

I'm a PS3 fan but I think MS has the nod in the motion control arena ! That Project Natal looked far sweeter than Sony's Motion Control !

Project Natal was an embarrassment for MS. Once again, they rushed a product so they could be first.

"Milo" (or what ever it was) is definitely faked. Too many things looked off in that video they showed.

Man! Sony is really screwing Nintendo big time with their controller.

"Ring" "Ring" -My phone's ringing, one second.
"Hello?" -Me.
"Hello, Wiiplay?" Unknown Caller.
"Yes? Who's this?" – Me.
"I am calling to ask you a huge favor" -Unknown Caller.
"Okay? What's the favor?" – Me.
"We are Nintendo Of America, and I am asking you for your help. Since you are known as Wiiplay on websites, I ask you to be our official N.O Officer" – Nintendo Of America.
"Okay? What would I have to do? " – Me.
"You would have to go onto Nintendo's Website.. Erm, I mean our website and look for Top Secret Information such as their.. Our future plans towards our company" – Nintendo?
"Okay!"

I go to the Nintendo website and find info about the Wii 2, releasing in 2012.
"Ring" "Ring"
"Hello?" Me.
"Hello, I assume you have found some kind of info about Nintendo?" -Nintendo?
"Yes, I found info about the Wii 2" – Me.
"Oh. Erm.. We lost that info a month ago, can you please give the info back to us?" -Nintendo?
"Sure, I'll fax it to you." Me.

November, 2011 Microsoft releases the XBOX 720, with motion control. They say they got their idea from a person known as 'Wiiplay' .
"Honey, I'm Wiiplay!" – I said to my wife.
"I never gave that to Microsoft, I gave it to Nintendo.. Wait a second.. It wasn't Nintendo, it was Microsoft!!" – Me.

Microsoft says in Press Conference:
"That's How We Roll!"

Dirty Soft!
