"Snake? Snaaaaaake!" Sorry, we just had to do it.
The world has gone MGS-crazy since E3, what with the announcements of Metal Gear Solid: Rising for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP. But it doesn't end there.
Not only have we already told you that last year's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will hit the Greatest Hits list with the agreeable price of $29.99, but we've heard that the original MGS will come to the PlayStation Store in digital download form. Well, according to Kotaku , Konami has issued a price and date for it: June 18 and $9.99. Now, you may notice that this is a good $5 more than most other PS1 games available on the Store (which you can play on either the PS3 or PSP, if you needed reminding). We've also heard that Final Fantasy VII will retail for that same price as well, so we're starting to wonder if this indicates a permanent upward shift in the price of these downloadable PS1 classics. We'd like to think they cost what they do simply because they are what they are…the best of the best of that generation. And this is probably the case, but with Sony's continued stance that the Network will never have any fees, they may need new ways of producing bigger profit.
Well, anyway, the information is worth having. Metal Gear Solid is a masterful gem from a time long past, and most will agree that it's definitely worth a measly ten bucks.

i might have to purchase it if i ever want to play it again…
I only own an 80GB with no B/C due to unfortunate circumstances. Although i do have MGS on disc, obviously it's unplayable on my part.

umm MGS and any PS1 disc works on all PS3s
yea all PS3's still play PSOne games. Its only PS2 games that cant be played.
Are these PSN PS1 games upscaled to HD.
Q.2: If so do they look better on in HD comapired to using the original disc upcaled?
I downloaded FFVII and was very dissappointed in the graphical quality on my HD. It is the original quality SD which looks worse on HD tv's than SD tv's. I moved it over to my psp and it is much better due to the lower resolution but it doesn't fill the screen. That is very annoying.
Oh well, I will still rekindle some great memories with this game. Both MGS and FFVII came out while I was in the Army and both were so amazing at that time. I was stationed in Hungary for 10 months between 97 and 98 and I played though FFVII while living in a tent! LOL!! My how times have changed.
Playing PS1 games can be a disappointment on the PS3 because of the impact of the much larger, high resolution screen. However, on the PSP….they are awesome.
FFVII isn't upscaled. You know, if they were it would boost sales through the roof. Repurchases people. I sadly own 3 copies of the original MGS (all working), but if it was remastered in HD I would get it again. Yeah I know, I'm nuts.
Is FFVII worth gettin then for the ps3 because i already have it on me computer and me psp.

Highlander,
I am unfamiliar with playing ps1 games on my psp. Is there a decent way to make the game utilize mor of my psp screen? The closes I could find was using the full screen setting, but this turned the game into stretchovision. On the normal setting it is like watching something at 720 native on a 1080 monitor.
@Highlander;
Couldn't have said it better myself. Love the fact I can play FFVII on the go now.
So it isnt upscaled… might aswell stick to my PS1 discs then, cheers for the advise.
@dfoz3
You can alter the way the screen is handled when playing a PS1 game on the pSP.
Simply press the 'Home' button and change the screen options in the menu that comes up. 'Screen Mode' is under 'Other Settings' in that 'Home' menu. Choose Full screen, it more or less fills the complete screen. You can also choose zoom, but I fins you lose a little off the top and bottom of the screen, if you can stand the slight stretch on the aspect ratio, "full screen" works best.
Well, I think the games are actually upscaled (my TV says "1080p" on its info bar when I play any PS1 or PS2 game), but what you're upscaling is a 32-bit game with graphics to match. It'll be sharp, but that means sharp blocks and general blockiness. I've been able to detect absolutely zip difference between PS1 CDs and PSone Classics in terms of video output.
Yeah that $10 price tag is rediculous. This is almost as crazy as videogame prices on Wii's Virtual Consol.
Yet for some reason I still purchased FFVII.
Beats paying $40 or more on Ebay even single disks go for $30 or more
I'll defo get this, they should sometime remake the first game and make it as the same aspect as mgs4 and add some little features in, it would be popular haha
Yea, the first MGS was definitely the best of the modern series. I never played the previous Metal Gear games. It could definitely use an update to current technology. I am curious how well the gameplay will hold up as I haven't played MGS in probably 10-12 years. It is certainly the best stealth game ever made though.
MGS2 for me was a huge dissappointment for some reason. I had such high hopes for it and was fairly let down. It seemed like presentation became more important than gameplay and I didn't like that about it. MGS3 totally lost me and I couldn't get past the beginning of the game. MGS4 however is great and feels like the gameplay is back on track. I have only played the first act of 4 and I think it is time to get back into it again. 🙂
Between this and FFVII, my PSP and PS3 just got two AAA titles. I know that they won't count in ordinary sales data, but these are still big titles to me.
Same feeling here. I just got it last night, first PSN purchase ever.
Never had a chance to finish the "master piece" when I had my PS1, its amazing how all this years later, I get to play it on my PSP or PS3…
Do you know if the saves can be transferred between the PSP and PS3?
Sorry to bug you with the question but, you seem to be one of the most knowledgeable guy in here, besides Ben of course LOL
My saves from FFVII that I put onto my PS3 were usable for the DL version of the game. It even has a PS button option to switch discs. MEEMMOOOOORRIIIIEESS!!!!!!!!!!!
I tried to transfer my saved file for FFVII from my PSP to my PS3. no luck. =/
I have been waiting a very long time for the PSN version of FFVII. Much agreed.
$9.99 isnt to bad for games like MGS and Final Fantasy VII. Resident Evil Directors Cut on the other hand…..i have a hard time finding value in anything Crapcom puts out these days. Theyre reputation has really sunk to an all time low in my view.
Can I transfer from one to the other thou? If I play it on my PS3 the whole weekend and later want to continue playing on my PSP, can I copy the save over?
Not sure about that. I know you can copy the files from PS2/PS1 memory cards on the PS3 to a USB device to make backups, and you can move them between the virtual PS2/PS1 memory cards as well. But I've not played with that functionality on the PSP much yet. I will try it tonight.
Thanks a Million!
Yes you can. I transfered my FFVII saves over to my PSP last night.
Btw, I copied my game save using my PS3. When I selected the PSP as the destination, I was prompted to convert the file for use on the PSP.
Just in case, I made a second PS1 memory card and copied all my saves to it. Then from the backup card I made, I resumed with the file copy and convert.
I was able to load up FFVII on my PSP right where I left off on the PS3.
Thanks guys!
I will start playing on my PS3 and them try it out.
I can't believe how far we've come, this is really sweet!! PSN Rules!!!
@Nynja, I wonder if it works in the other direction? You might have to use a PC and put the PSP into USB mode to grab the file.
@Highlander
Sorry for the delay in response, but not sure if it would. I would hope it does.
It's a sad thing if any gamer doesn't have this game.
Not having this game is like being clueless 'bout gaming.
Same with Zelda: Ocarina of time and Super Mario World
I'd say being clueless is more like never playing "Pong", "Spaced Invaders", and "Pac-man"… maybe even "Q-bert".

It is a great game but I have to disagree with the other to.I started out as a Sega Fanboy so I have not had any Nintendo game or systems to date.I did play them somewhere but means nothing to me.
@scare – I've never really played Ocarina. I tried it for about 20 mins and didn't like it, but it doesn't mean I'm clueless. I've been playing since '89. I still have have hundreds of gaming magazines from the 80's and 90's. I've just never been a Nintendo fan.
I don't like Zelda whatsoever. Link annoys me.
I bought FF7 on the PSN, and sadly it just looked too horrible to play. I need to get me a bigger memory card for my PSP. I hate that it doesn't fill the screen up though!

Good for you, it's still one of the games you can miss and still call yourself a gamer.
*can't
Oh please. Even Ben has missed out on crucial games, why don't you tell him he's not a gamer?
Like?
I apparently missed out on Bioshock. Didn't like it. OH WOW!!! FIRE…AND ICE…AND ELECTRICITY!!!! That's why infamous doesn't really do it for me either. It's just electricity…….that's it. Really? Kinda sad. I'm waiting for Prototype. Why has that game not been hyped more? I've seen that stupid Gamestop commercial a billion times but nothing else except for a trailer about 4 months ago. What gives yo? It's gonna suck isn't it? Eh….well….I've already reserved it. Crap.

Ask him, I don't remember. I just remember him mentioning it before, and he wasn't apologizing for it. Just like I'm not, I like what I like. I don't need you to credit me as a gamer.
How old are you?
So there is a big differene between the physical disk and PSN download in terms of graghics? I hhave not played a PS1 gamew on my PS3 so I am not sure hoe that works. I understand that there is smoothness added, but that feature does not work on PSN titles?
I have SotN from the store, and is OK on my HDTV, but I do not want to buy the digital version if the actual disk looks better.
No, the downloadable game is basically a packaged image of the discs. You're playing the exact same software in the exact same emulator on the PS3. The only difference is the lack of a physical PS1 compatible FFVII disc.
Ok, thanks, I thought that there was an upconversion ran on PS1 media when they were played.
I think he's asking if the PS1/PS2 smoothing option in the XMB works on the downloaded titles since it was meant for the disc based ones.
The game will still prompt you to change discs. When it does, pull up the HOME menu and the option to swap discs is right there.
The PC version of FFVII looks awesome compared to the PS1 version. I wonder how many mods are lurking around the net for that game. Hmmmmm………I gotta go…..I gotta…..thing.
@PS3Addict.
When you're playing on a PS3, obviously the smoothing is needed to help the picture because you're stretching such a small image up. But on the PSP, the image is about the right size for the screen's actual resolution, and smoothing isn't needed.
If I get a PSP someday, I'll buy the dl. The discs will work fine in the meantime though.
i picked up resident evil for $9.99 off of the store.
i had forgotten just how god awful the controls and the voice acting is.
still, it's awfully fun to play on the psp.
