inFamous Encourages Addictive Personalities

Ah, remember the good ol' days when we were all young with lots of time on our hands? And we'd go all day – with only a few short breaks – playing our latest favorite video game? I remember doing it with Final Fantasy Tactics .

These days, though, you don't hear much about "binge gaming" anymore, and it's probably due to the fact that with the ever-rising average age of participation, the normal gamer simply doesn't have the time for such an activity. But according to some feedback we're seeing around the Internet, including the following passage taken from the PlayStation forums and posted at BeefJack , inFamous is rekindling some old "please God, don't make me stop!" desires:

"I really started getting into the game today at about 8am or so and I totally got sucked in for about 6hrs straight. At one point just told everyone not pass calls through me ’till further notice. This game gets you in some zone where, like in addictive online shooter games you call for 'just one more round,' this game grabs you with 'Just… one… more… mission and I’ll stop…this time for sure' before you know it time has flown by."

You know, despite my increasing time restraints, I can totally relate. I played this bad boy for three and a half hours the other day, and I haven't done that since Final Fantasy XII several years ago. I don't think I've done it with any game of this new generation, although I will say I stopped playing certain titles – like MGS4 – just so I could savor the flavor more. So how's about you? Is inFamous really "sucking you in?" Or have you not tried it yet, you bad gamer you?  That whole, "okay, just one more mission" thing definitely got me…

Totally sucked in.Is really satisfying doing the side missions and feeling like you're cleaning up the entire city. This is the best and most addictive single player game I've played this generation(haven't played Uncharted&MGS4 yet).

Well, I got quite addicted to the demo I have to say… simply enjoyed the destruction… but due to my limited budget it is a game I will not pick up, as i have others I would like to add to my collection… sometimes you can't have your cakes and eat it!

There are a lot of games that made me do that. Oblivion, GTA IV, COD4, inFamous, Skate, Skate 2 and Prince of Persia (2008) all made me sit for 5-6 hours straight at least.

Yes, www, really. I spent hours on Prince of eprsia and found all 1001 light seeds, the lowest and highest points in the game, 100% explorations, etc. It def. had the addictive feel of an assassins creed or Infamous – completed 37% of the game over the weekend, at least 12 hours worth, and I didn't play it at all on Sunday! 😀

II feel the same way ben I've been playing infamous non stop from day 1. I've prolly played for about 20hrs or so and should be completing the game by today. I'm going to go back and play through it again as the bad guy lol.

While there are some/few games nowadays that do give one that old feeling of not wanting to stop, it's just not as good as the old days with PS1 games. I blame it on constant saving/ ability to save anytime, but remember those old PS1 games where you had to find those far-away-from-each-other save points?

Tell me about it, it seemed that way with RE1. If you didn't have any ribbons you had to try and remember where some were that you didn't have room for and you have to trek all the way back to a bloody typewriter, and of course while on the way spiders and hunters try to molest you. Any who, Infamous is pretty adictive, so many side missions and so many enemies to take down with different stunts you have to perform, and trophies! Yet I still have to play through as a good guy.

and oh yeah Arnold this is for you:

Sacred 2 Fallen Angel is def one of the games i can spend hours on playing. To bad some people didnt take the time to really play the game or you would have found a lot of cool things that they put into this game.

I've been a long time reader of you, Arnold, and John's articles and I must commend you on a job well done with PSX; keep up the good work.

I've felt very inclined to start posting comments and this article definitely deserves one. Because of my work schedule, I really only play games from Thur-Sat, and I just recently started playing Legend of Dragoon and I still play Killzone 2 online. I purchased inFamous this past Thursday and my first session lasted 6 hours. The game is so addictive that during a mission, if I see a shard or dead drop, I stop to go and get it lol. I will definitely complete the game within 2 weeks and start another to complete Infamous mode. Its an awesomely addictive game and as of now, inFamous, Uncharterd 2, and Killzone 2 are the top 3 contenders for GOTY.

Just beat my first walk through(Evil path) this weekend and am going back in for the Hero path. Indeed it's hard to put down since not all missions are the same or you get sidetracked w/Shard searching or Drops 😛

Time well spent, lol.

First off I was impressed at how much better the actual retail game is then the demo (and I thought the demo was good). The demo really does not give you any sense of how the actual game plays out. As far as the game goes I did not have much time to play this weekend but a few hours did pass each time I did sit down with it. One thing, is it me or is this game freakin' hard when you first start out? I keep getting picked off by baddies on buildings and sometimes you can't even immediately see where they are. Quite frustrating.

I had the same problem – I kept getting killed, but once you start getting those upgrades by spending XP you turn into this badass killing machine(or restraining machine in good guy mode) that can take anything down. Of course when I got into the Warren I started feeling weak once again. Need to get more XP to start laying waste to the dustmen as much as I'd like to!

I guess i'll have to download the demo i've heard good things about this game. But this is not my most have for my list so I'll pass for now.
I've went 6 hours and not even realized it especially with KH2 and GOW oh and the other day was Eternal Sonata thank goodness my husband is a big gamer like myself and that he likes Playing WOW alot so i can have the PS3 if not we'd be fighting over the console all day and night lol.

Ooooh, yeah… While all around me, people are dissing SFIV for being ridiculously hard (plus me not being into fighters at all) I ended up staying up till 5:30 in the morning trying to beat Seth. Was gonna rent it again to unlock more characters, but I rented inFamous instead.

Well, let's just say, if I didn't have to work this morning, I would've still been playing when the sun started to rise.

I relate with both BeefJack and Ben. I spent 3-4 hours Sunday just doing little side missions, searching for Dead Drops and Blast Shards and leveling up Cole and had a blast. And all of it was done in the Neon District. As a face Cole, I want to completely clean up each area to 100% and find everything. I won't be finished with this game until I get all the trophies.

Ben Dutka PSXE

Yup, me too. Spent all my time doing every last side mission in the Neon District. 🙂

I'll just paste what I posted on the PS blog (to save me time):

From the very first trailer shown until release I have been waiting for this game. I have to be honest that when playing the demo, I was a little disappointed. I felt that the game would get pretty repetitive fairly quickly. After playing the full game over the weekend, that prediction held true until yesterday evening.
I am stunned at how the story took a turn for the better and depth of the game play dove into the abyss. I am hooked and cannot stop thinking about it. What's worse is that E3 is this week and I will be torn between what to do with my spare time. Play inFAMOUS or check out the E3 news and videos?

Kudos to Sucker Punch for such a stellar game. I haven’t been sucked (no pun intended) into an offline game based solely on story since Uncharted and MGS4. Sony PS3 has 3 big guns under its belt now. Solid enjoyable titles with high replay values.

***

On that note; just finished opening the last island and now going back to finish all the side missions of the Warren. I need to collect all those damn shards because I want more battery cores (and trophies).

I too am playing and finding myself heading off when blast shards and dead drops are in the area. Started doing all the blue missions though as some of the side missions we cheesing me off big time but then I did a blue mission and then on the way to the next blue one I did a few side missions on the way there I couldnt help myself. I have been a hero all the way along so far but whats annoying me is I cant walk by and leave someone on the floor I have to help heal them lol and I try to live capture most of the reapers. So addicitve 🙂 Geat game

Im enjoying inFamous much more then i thought i would. I actually like it a lot. Never liked open world games much until this one. But i dont think its going to suck me in like MGS4 did. I played that game over and over and over for months after its release. I have atleast 15 play through, not to mention all the time on MGO spent. my wife was sick of hearing the theme song at the main menu and begged me to anything else. Ha!

What game doesn't suck you in for at least 4 hours? I could probably list the ones that dont easier. I think for me, if I pull an all day Sunday or Saturday on it then it's a good game. As the post above, Sacred 2 currently has me enthralled as Infamous still sits in the sleeve for Gamefly.

can anybody tell me what is Kojima doing at the microsoft conference? Havn't played infamous yet, but i'm sure it's a great game, by the way it's rated T, i like that, Devs need to follow suckerpunch, they'll sell more games like that. You could make great games without F-Bombs.

meh, this game surely is addicting, espesually the side missions, but i wouldnt say the most addicting, personally for me it was mgs4, killzone 2's online, and the number 1 most addicting is fallout 3, i must have put so many hours into that game, just cant wait for the DLC (espesually mothership zeta) its going to be intence (well for me at least)

The most addictive game I've played is easily Fallout 3, playing 5+ hours daily for a little while. Infamous isn't quite as addictive, but it does keep me playing for several hours at a time.
