Activision Hypes Modern Warfare 2, Prepping Lots Of DLC

We've seen this kind of bravado on the part of Activision before but then again, in many ways, they're entitled.

Activision Blizzard tossed out a few pre-E3 remarks and according to That Videogame Blog , they said that November's launch of Modern Warfare 2 won't just be huge…it'll be the "largest entertainment launch of any kind." To add to this bold claim, they also mentioned that downloadable content would definitely come in droves for the hotly anticipated blockbuster; it's not surprising, considering the extreme success enjoyed by World at War 's DLC. Now, some of you may consider their aggressive marketing overly confident; that it may even border on the cocky. But let's not forget just how immensely popular the original Modern Warfare was, and that happened when the PS3 hadn't quite come into its own yet. By the time this game launches, you can probably expect to see a combined 55 – 60 million PS3s and 360s out there, which corresponds to a ton of sales potential. Who of you out there can say in all honesty that they're not at least considering a purchase…?

But anyway, this is just one of those situations where we know a certain game will rule the sales charts. Even with other promising titles out there in November and December, Modern Warfare 2 will certainly make its mark.

I can't wait. CoD4 is one of my favorite games.
Also is this going to be a CoD game or just Modern Warfare 2?

I have no problem with DLC, but let's hope there's none within the first month =| otherwise I'd feel cheated out of something they could have always had…(yes I do realize that means they could have it already all ready right now but never release it till later, lol)

I am expecting sales of at least 10 to 12 million for this multi plat!

Quite possibly more. I will be selling some old games to raise capital for the next wave of goodies…

I interpret this as "we are going to give you the bare minimum we can to justify the $60 price tag then we're going to charge you $5 a pop for extra maps etc which we could have put in the original release but decided to squeeze you for money instead."

I missed WaW and will probably miss this too.

I kind of have to agree with you. I hate when devs talk about how great the DLC will be when they are still working on the game. Kind of makes you feel that they are already undercutting the real game to get more money out of you. I can understand Devs wanting to make more money and DLC is a great way to do it, but at what cost to the games and gamers?

I think I'll be looking at MAG before I bother with COD..but we'll see when the games hit the shelves.

I was thinking the same thing. If the maps are ready, why couldn't they be included on the disc release.

Yea, I agree CoD has been almost exactly the same the last 3 times and people just love the PRESTIGE mode?

I just have to LOL at all those people who are saying it's the exact same game. COD4, IMO at least, the greatest FPS of all time. It still has tens of thousands of people playing it online. If people love it so much, WHY would you possibly change it? They're updating graphics slightly and adding in new perks, weapons etc.

I don't care if this is just an over priced map pack for COD4. It's what I want and I can't wait, along with MANY other people.

Why are you so afraid of change? COD 4 was a great game but thats in the past, lets move on to the next great thing. They could've done so much with the sequel but hey, laziness pays off right?

I don't even know how you prepare for 'loads' of DLC ages before release.

That's just a way to take more money from people.
Plain and simple.

🙁

Well UNLESS the DLC is very good, refeshing and is just another "Bonus" to a superb game.

I hate the whole Map Packs DLC. No offense, but with you can do alot of stuff with 10 bucks (pick up a used Metal Gear Solid 3, buy candy, buy white out, a really cheap knife, a box of tissues) and I really don't like having to pay for 3 places I can go to virtually in a game.

That'd mean you pay $3.33 each place. Literally. And you already dish out $60 for the game!

I hear that, I buy way too much candy these days. I believe I have a problem, I hope the story is as good as 4, because honestly it wasn't bad in my opinion. Well for what it was of course, MW2 will be pretty epic, I just hope they have more death animations, and more animations as a whole. Generally I'll get the skoop on any map packs to see if it's actually worth $10 bones, it does have replay value though.

Oh yes and COD4 was not and will never be "the best fps of all time" great but not the greatest.

i have no interest in this game at all and don't understand the fuss.

So yeah, i'm one who can say it 🙂

War games are all the same. I don't want mind numbing killing sprees repeated 10 times a year with different cast and "script" each time!

Give me real thought provoking, artistic, challenging stuff.

I won't get that though….money is the motivation these days 🙁

Well choosing the best fps is like choosing your favorite band, its near impossible. Or for me at least. Nice Prince avatar, really. My choices for best ever would be Goldeneye64, Half Life, Crysis(maybe just graphicly), Killzone2 yea I said it! or maybe Counter Strike. The first half life in my opinion was pretty bloody epic but the greatest? Its up to you to decide.

It seems as though we've come back to the DLC issues again and I really don't understand what the fuss is about. Lets use another example and see if the problem still exists:

Lets say someone makes a movie. That movie does well in theaters and the audience asks for more. So, the movie producers decide that they should run a television series on cable instead. Not one big sequel, but several smaller sequels.

Then another movie company makes a movie that they know is going to create a demand for more so they plan right from the very beginning to have an accompanying series to run afterwards. When the movie comes out it is well received and then the series airs.

The main goal was the create the best movie possible in each case and they succeeded in each case. However, one company decided to plan ahead and prepare some EXTRA content for fans who might desire it. In one case the producers made extra content AFTER the release and in the other case it was BEFORE. How is one worse than the other? Neither one effects the actual product they're planning on selling you.
In both cases movie-goers paid for and saw a great movie that they enjoyed. If a person only saw the movie, and not the tv series, they don't lose out on anything. They still saw a great movie. For those who want more, they have the option of expanding their experience with the tv series.

In both cases the moviegoer gets to see a good movie, exactly what they paid for. And then, if they liked what they saw and want more they have the option to watch the series when it airs. For people who don't have cable, in no way was their movie going experience ruined, they still saw a great movie.

No movie would EVER get good reviews if key plot points and major side stories were held back and kept for a follow up series. The same is true for games. If the main product is crap, the extra content for that product won't sell. So, it is still in the best interest of the game makers to sell you the best possible product to make you WANT the extra content.

In summation, I refuse to view DLC that was planned for ahead of the release of the game as a scam. They are NOT holding back anything that actually belongs in the game. You are NOT entitled to the extra content for free. In NO WAY does not having extra content detract from the original game. PERIOD. I think that anybody who says othewise has a poor understanding of good business decisions or just likes to complain.

If somebody has a GOOD argument against me, I'd love to hear it. I just can't possibly understand how planning DLC beforehand is somehow a scam for gamers.

Yeah I just said that DLC is perfectly fine/awesome if it's just a bonus to an already sweet, polished, out of the box game 😉

But if people are planning a lot of DLC before release, you'd have to get a little suspicious wouldn't you? No matter how reliable they were,
(excluding Hideo Kojima, he's a legend LOL).
