The news has come pouring out of Japan in the past few weeks, thanks mostly to Famitsu and Dengeki. After claiming he's basically done with his role in Final Fantasy XIII , Square-Enix producer Tetsuya Nomura says Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII will be something special.
According to a recent Famitsu interview with Nomura, as summarized by QJ.net , they're currently in the process of testing out the combat mechanic and some "map gimmicks" in Versus XIII . Once they get a bit further, Nomura says he'll be able to show off something "very special," so keep your eyes and ears primed for that juicy unveiling. Then there's Agito XIII , which has already undergone a few "overhauls," and Nomura boldly states that this PSP title will eventually become "the pinnacle of handheld RPGs in this console generation." There was also a brief mention of The Third Birthday , which is a new installment in the Parasite Eve series; apparently, the team has gotten to the point where the prologue is now playable. All of this makes us very excited for future S-E products…despite our nagging fear that it could take a while to see any of them. We have patience, but there is a limit.
Anyway, we'll keep looking around for more on the aforementioned titles, all of which we have high expectations for. They're all worthy of our attention, at the very least.
Well its nice to hear an update, sounds like we wont be getting FFXIII Versus for a long time. I'm intruiged by PE3, i liked the 2nd one very much (1st was never released in the UK ….) cant wait to see actual gameplay footage of that.
Versus XIII better be something special more special than FF XIII.I am hopeful thought that by the time that Versus comes out I will have the strength and energy to hold up a PS3 controller(you know what old age can do to a person).
Must avoid saying anything cynical about crack addled chimps with typewriters…
Can't wait for either of these games actually. I truly wish SquEnix would get out of the deep blue funk they have been in. But for me it's as I said in an earlier post, there are trust issues and burned bridges. Time for them to start rebuilding.
I hope this "very special" thing that nomura will show us won't be something xbox 360 related. Because if so, there goes our exclusive.
UPDATE: This just in! Final Fantasy Versus XIII is now a PS4 launch game! To be released in 2013!
Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little…
Parasite Eve!?
S-E, you have my attention again, i don't care about the commercial looking FF13, Parasite Eve is something i wanted to see continue for a very long time.
Please, please, please! dont mess it up or commercialise it.

Lotusflow3r, I couldn't agree more.
On another note: How about some Vagrant Story? That game had one of the best stories, gameplay, art direction etc.
Square, what happened to you? Oh, that's right Enix.

How about that: Square keeps me waiting some more. Will wonders never cease.
God, I hate Square Enix.

FFXIII Vs supposed to win back the fans, but if its released any later than 2011, it's dead to me.
they just aren't what they used to be
As much as I like to complain about SE, I'm still gonna buy FFXIII. I just like to pretend I'm not until it releases…makes me feel better about it, I guess.

I want to get excited for these games, but then I realize how far they are from being playable so I kinda just read it and forget it.
There are way too many other games coming out that deserve the time, not like Square that keeps us waiting for years upon years.
I agree with you stickemup i see how far off they are and say why get excited, i made that mistake when they showed and announced FF13. So i'll just sit and wait but i'll get excited for GOD OF WAR 3 instead 🙂
If these people spent less time talking and more time making their games they'd have a lot more fans.
If Nomura is on board game is guaranteed to be awesome. I think versus and the psp games are behind schedule cause SE is relying on Nomura for almost every game they are developing (FFXIII, KH) on both HD consoles and portables.
That said, this year is looking very good rpg-wise. My hopes are high in Resonance of Faith, it seems game got a semi realtime battle system, ala VC, where you move one character each turn, and foes attack only that character.

So let me get this straight..We now have Final Fantasy XIII on most platforms, Final Fantasy Versus XIII which is supposed to be a PS3 Exclusive, And Final Fantasy Agito XIII for the PSP?
Wow, next I'm expecting to see Final Fantasy XIII the FFVII Redux….How many different versions of one game are they going to make?
They're all different games, not versions of one game.
-Arvis
All of the FFXIII titles are different games each with their own unique story. The only relation they have to each other is the developer and the name "Final Fantasy".
I had heard that 2 big honchos at SE couldn't come to an agreement on what the next FF title should be. So in the end, they decided they would both do their own vision of the next FF. As for Agito (the PSP version) again, rather than doing a port or remake of one of the 2 FFXIII titles, they opted to make it a completely unique experience. Kudos to SE for not simply porting a game to the PSP.
That's the thing though, if they are completely different stories and don't have anything in common, then why call them XIII's at all? At least all the FFVII's spin offs had something in common, but XIII's are just different FF's. For those of us that read the forums and post online, we'll know which one is which. But the average consumer that doesn't research games is going to be confused as hell when they see 3 different FFXIII titles sitting side by side on the shelf…just a thought
Mmm, juicy.
Confusion reigns with S-E
Maybe they should just start labeling them….
FFXIII-A
FFXIII-B
FFXIII-C, etc
And so on till they run out of the alphabet….
then they can start with
FFXIIIAA,
FXIIIBB,
FXIIICC, etc
Then maybe they can start with just using colors, Hell, I know Crayola has at least 128 varieties.
And so on…..
