We've always said the same thing: if you plan to make PS1 classics available on the PlayStation Network, you had best assemble the classics . The best of the best.
We're not quite there yet, but there's evidence that several true-blue classics will soon be headed to digital download land. It was first rumored by PlayStation LifeStyle last month and now, Examiner.com has found that the ESRB has rated the following titles:
Well, what's the point of re-rating age-old video games? As far as we can tell, there's one reason and one reason only. They'd be fantastic additions to the PSN and the best part is, if you were too young for the PS1 classics, you don't have to miss out any longer. Provided you can accept the giant difference in visuals, you'll be in for a very big treat if you've never played stuff like the original MGS before. Just remember…some of us recall a time when those graphics were downright mind-blowing. 😉
Man……..I own like 3 versions of the original MGS. Sad thing is, I wanna get this. I'm cursed. Hope they follow up RE with RE2 and 3. I think that if I played 2 again, I would turn to gelatin from overexposure. 3 I wouldn't mind playing again. The Nemesis is freakin unrivaled. One of the best bosses ever. You fight him like 20 damn times.

lol I'm playing resi evil 3 right now, and damn I'm scared of the Nemesis. I'm scared of playing the game 😛 .Unstoppable behemoth nightmare, he is.
I bought the Metal Gear Solid Box set (MGS, MGS2, and MGS3) after i finished playing 4. i might buy this too. just to play it on my PSP. If it supports wide screen, i sold!
Depends on the cost for me. As I posted once before, I bought MGS, Resident Evil and many more classic PS1 titles the FIRST time around. It sure would be nice if Sony had a system in place that let me convert the games into digital files for use on PS3 and especially PSP. If they're only a few bucks, MGS on the go sounds too good to pass up. But I did pay 50 bucks each for these games when they first came out so it would be nice if Sony agreed that was enough!

Most of those games are already out on the Japanese PlayStation Store, I don't see why they won't come to the US/UK Store.
But the Japanese store does have a ton more of them, they even have their own section on the main menu called archives, not just a little section under games. They recently released Final Fantasy 7, if that's not a classic I don't know what is.
I guess Sony doesn't profit from the UK/US PS1 games as much…
The profit is the same, putting these games up on PSN is absolutely the cheapest form of game development since they are effectively doing little more than repackaging the ISO file(S) for the game. Once they push past a few thousand copies sold, I'd estimate that it's all gold. Easy money, after all games like MGS or FFVII literally sell themselves.
For some reason Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil never became part of my 40+ PS1 collection so if this is true I will be looking forward to playing these classic titles.
man, you have that many PSOne Games? I always limited my self to Konami, Capcom and Squaresoft when it came to PSOne Games. Twisted Metal and Gran Turismo were cool too but i never held onto them. Today, i only own all the Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, MegaManX and Rival Schools titles for PSOne. Capcom, Konami, Squaresoft.
mgs & resi evil on psp?
yes please !!!
If you haven't played the original MGS, you haven't lived…….period. That is actual scientific proven fact. The Gamecube remake was good but it was matrixized and sometimes a little corny. Using the MGS2 engine for it was nice. I wish they could all be remade for PS3. A little early for MGS3 though. Remakes of RE1-3 would do well too. The Gamecube version of 1 was good, but could use a new coat of paint.
Agreed on the resi remakes,it would be nice if they were ps3 only!then they would be longer than an hour and a half, unlike RE5.
Damn dvds, thats right i'm looking a you dvd, with your 9gig storage capacity, making me finish the lastest installment in my fav series in under 12 hours first play through.
YUCK

i know this is off-topic, but have you guys seen the Resident Evil Regeneration game for the iPhone? It looks really good…the comments say it's like mini Resident Evil 4…check it out on iTunes. I don't have an iPhone/iPod touch myself…
Back on topic: Old DVD or CD-ROM capacities is why remakes should just be graphical. I don't want it to be too radical like the new Star Trek movie….i don't like the Star Trek series much but I remember watching it what I was younger and the change is ridiculous. I don't want a shooty-shooty RE 1 I want the beautiful director chosen scenes. My favorite is the one in RE1 gamecube remake when you go up the stairs left of the main door…the lighting was amazing.
But I would accept a "Director's Cut" with more story and better graphics instead of a remake…('_-)

RE5 SPOILER:You gotta admit though, the last 5 battles with Wesker was some of the most epic moments in videogame history. It's about damn time.
oh the game rocks alright but i was disgusted with the lenght of the story mode & lack of a jill sidestory feature
hmmm do you need a second analog nub for mgs? can't remember hmm …damn you psp for lacking another nub!
Well, Its about time! Although I wont be buying them as I already own them for PS1. Anything to make the NA PSN up to par with its JP counterpart.
Ah, but, you'll be able to play this one on your PSP.
If you own a PS1 game you can already play it on your PSP through your PS3 connectivity. No need to buy it again.
You can, but the controls lag horribly and it's harder to do when you;re on the road, and even when it does work (it is a nice feature) it kills your batteries. Having the game run 'natively' on the PSP is a better option, but I understand the point. I compared Crash Bandicoot running remotely and running directly, and to be honest the running remotely was incredibly cool, but the game running on the PSP felt more responsive and smoother.
Not that I need them (My collection is complete) but where's the Final Fantasies? And someone should get on putting PS2 games on PSN, that IS the reason they destroyed software b/c right?
i wonder why mgs would have to be re-rated… didn't they rate it when it was re-released in the metal gear solid collection?
anyhow i'm with fatelementality. i currently own 3 copies of the original. when i had a gamecube, i had the twin snakes (can't believe i ever sold it) and if they release it on the psn you can bet i'll be forking some money over for it again. it's a sickness. actually, i have a really bad case. i have more than one copy of every metal gear solid game except for mgs4…
They have to be re-rated because they are appearing for sale on new platforms – the PS3 and PSP.
Heh, I have a Gamecube and Twin Snakes. That's it. No other games. I forever love MGS. Couldn't bear to part with it.
one of my local game stores had the twin snakes in their used section not long ago. nearly bought it (would have given my wii something to do) but i just couldn't bring myself to spend money on the game for the sixth time.
but you know what i'd like to see released on the psn? MGS:VR Missions. that's a game i wish i could find again. good fun.
This is an easy day 1 purchase , easy. A real must have. The PSP suddenly becomes something of a must have as well with all these incredible PS1 classics becoming available.
Love it!
MGS4 Limited Editions are going for $35 at the closest Future Shop. I think I might buy like 10 and sell them on ebay in a few years lol.
Hmmm…what if Kojima's "next" game was actually a remake of Metal Gear Solid for the PS3 which was why ESRB re-rated it……..lol jk – pretty unlikely.
However the digital download option does sound likely and a strong move on Sony's part. Or should I say more so of "SCEA's" part.
I just wish that they would remake the first two for the MSX. That would be amazing. I know Ben, I've said that like a thousand times.
I second the thought of a MG and MG2 remake. Most people have yet to play them unless they bought MGS3:Subsistence. And now they can flesh out there story's. It gives me goosebumps thinking about it.
WHERES MY FINAL FANTASY 7 SQUARE ENIX
Good deal for those who were too young, or those who wanna go nostalgic again.
Don't have a PSP yet(later on), but thank goodness I already have all 6 in my PS fatty collection.
And YES, I did say SIX….
there's 2 different versions of Resident Evil: Directors Cut for the first Playstation…..
One version is "non"-Dual Shock & the other one "is" DualShock.

MGS1 on PSP would be brilliant!
if you have MGS1 for PS1 you can use remote play and do it that way. I sadly did it. It made the graphics look sharper on such a small screen.
ahhh man mgs1 saved on ps3 cant wait!
MGS and RE:DC on my PSP to go… this news putted a smile on my face
Good selection of games. Hope they keep them coming.
I have FF VIII & IX. I've looked online for 7, but people are charging hundreds of dollars of it. The Greatest Hits edition isn't even that rare. So Sony & SE please get on that for me.
MGS and RE:DC on the PSN, is a day one purchase for me. Hopefully that's followed up by FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, and RE2. But I bet, that out of all of the 'hopefuls' I just listed, RE2 will make it waaay before any of the FF's do.
Until tekken 3 comes I don't care about any ofther game (except maybe Tombi!)
I'd get MGS for sure. After the greatness that is MGS4 I'm completely sold on the series.
Since we're talking about other classig games from the PS1 on PSN….
Just for the hell of it, they really ought to bring the PS1 classic version of Doom to PSN as well, that way it really can be said that Doom will run on anything! 😉
Also, the PS1 launch titles should be released as a special collector's pack.
Here's a link to a retro-review of the PS1 launch titles…

Nostalgia is a wonderful and powerful thing. People will spend $$$ when you press the nostalgia button in their head.

@Highlander,
Nice catch on that retro link! THANKS!
After reading it, I went right into my PS1 collection & tried all of them myself, but I had to substitute the StreetFighter one with SF EX plus @ from 1997 since I don't have the one's before it.
I have to argue with their Ridge Racer pick though, as I now find it graphically super dated and I even the Ridge Racer: Revolution two years later in 1997, is looking super ragged too.
But I'll definetly agree with their pick on Raymond, it still looked great today & I think it will look timeless for many moons to come.
Agreed. It's amazing how some games can become so very dated so very quickly, and others retain their charm despite their age.
Funnily enough I think that a lot of these early games hold up better on the PSP because of the lower resolution screen and simple control scheme. After all the first PS1 controllers were not dual stick controllers, good grief it's not like analogue sticks were on every controller at all.
I anticipate Metal Gear Solid will look pretty good on the PS3 with a big screen, but will be exceptional on the PSP. I remember playing it way back, and those graphics on the PSP screen are not gonna look shabby at all.
this is good, hope they keep them coming
also, what they need badly is to put ps2 games in the store for download because the only ps3's sold right now cant play ps2 games and in my opinion the ps2 had the best games ever created
It would be easier, fairer and far more popular to restore BC for PS2 through firmware and then start releasing PS2 games for download, than it would to release a limited selection of PS2 classics with individual emulation built into each.
One other thing to consider with PS2 games is that the larger games can be 4GB or more in size, so downloading PS2 games can become unwieldy very quickly.
Sony should buy Kojima Productions.
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this but MGS in the JPSN is 500 yen which is 4.99 US. Also FF VII is 1,500 yen which is 14.95 US. So for everyone fearing high prices fret not because it would be retarted to sell MGS at $20 or FF VII for $30 in the USPSN.
On a side note FF VII takes 1715 mb of memory while MGS is around 700 mb(maybe more can't remember). Good thing I bought a 8 and 16 GB pro duo for my PSP.
thanks for that info, mustang. Five bucks is fair for a PS1 download, to be sure. 15 is a bit steep, but I doubt Sony would charge that much here in the US (at least I hope not.)
$15 for FFVII isn't a bad price considering you'll not find it on CD for less, and this way it'll play on your PSP or your PS3.
I'll pay $15 for FFVII on my PSP, if they want to slap FFVIII along side for another $15, I'll pay up for that too.
MGS takes up 780 mb according to the JPSN. RESIDENT EVIL is 500 yen so just like MGS that'll be 4.99 US. Oh yeah can't wait!!
