You know, we had almost forgotten about this. But it may come roaring back into the limelight within the next few weeks, and it could also be one of the biggest announcements at this year's E3.
Way back in the summer of 2007, the PlayStation blog let fly with the story that Rockstar and SCEA had struck an exclusivity deal for a PS3 project. PSU reminds us of what SCEA director of third-party relations Michael Shorrock wrote:
"As part of our long standing relationship with Rockstar, and the incredible success for both companies with the cultural icon that is Grand Theft Auto, we've agreed to the PlayStation exclusive rights of the next great franchise from the Rockstar studios. Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that…This is really a win-win situation for both companies."
If you have a good memory, you might remember this. Then, SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton talked about the special Rockstar agreement on Spike TV's Game Head show, but all he would say is that the project isn't L.A. Noire . Tretton said that "in exchange for letting them out of that great exclusive (GTAIV), we've got the rights to the next great franchise from Take-Two." Okay, well…any ideas, gamers? You can basically erase Grand Theft Auto V from your thoughts, as it's not a "new great franchise" and there's no chance Rockstar and Take-Two would sacrifice so many sales by making that mega-blockbuster exclusive to one platform. We've already heard about Red Dead Redemption – and that's a sequel, anyway – and Tretton said it isn't L.A. Noire . So we must be talking about a currently unannounced IP.
Well, it has been almost two years and E3 is just around the corner. We know there are several unknown PS3 exclusives hovering out there, just waiting for the official announcement, so maybe Take-Two and SCEA will spill the beans in only a few weeks time…
E3 prospects for SONY keep getting better. 😛
Yea… probably the announcement of GTA DLC right after the second MS DLC is released at E3. It's either something new, or recycled DLC. I'm not too excited over this until i see something.
Im pretty sure its going to be a whole new IP, II just hope its not another sandbox game.
If its another GTA I'm not excited.
same lol they really need to change something in the next gta that comes out aswell gta4 handnt changed at all apart from better graphics
Hopefully a nice big adventure game, but does this mean that L.A Noire is not exclusive any more?
Max Payne?
they already announced Max 3, and i dont think it's exclusive.
That makes me nervous, if it isn't a massive hit then they made a bad deal. Then again Rockstar is usually awesome. But I can't even begin to theorize as to what this could be. Those graphic novels are popular, maybe we'll get something like Sin City in a game.
L.A Noire is still an exclusive btw…and im a lil worried about Sony giving up GTA for this unknown new franchise but then agen sony wouldnt give GTA's exclusive-ness away if they wasnt gonna get sanc decent in return would they?!?
I don't think Sony "gave up" anything man. MS took it away from them. I just hope whatever new IP comes out IS PS3-exclusive, IS good and STAYS exclusive 🙂

Maybe it'll be a whole new game they have secretly or another GTA i'm going with my theory on GTA
I wonder, is this the R* that does the Manhunt series? If so maybe it might be Manhunt 3 or something along those lines. Who knows?
Theres only 1 Rockstar Games lol.
and quote: "new great franchise" .
Since I mentioned this game in your first e3 article does that mean I win?
yes
sweet.
Um, I guess. I don't remember it. 🙂
Ben he said 'next great franchise' not 'new great franchise'
what exactly is the difference in those phrases?
There is none Shadow lol
Yup. To be next IS to be new, otherwise it's a continuance.
With this bit of news I'm a little meh…after GTA3 I was done with R*. The new IP would have to be such a departure from what they've done in the past to get my attention. Then I might take notice.
well by meaning new would = new IP.
It better be a Rockstar RPG ! Gimme open world with leveling and boss battles.
Close your eyes and Imagine a Modern day RPG 2X the size of GTA4, with a deep leveling system that Like Mass Effect and FF10 Grid system combined also seeing as how BluRay will allow a wider range of data, they could add in the ability to truly do everything in this city, such as Rob every bank visible, rob houses (at least 2 – 3 houses on every block has an opening), 20+ wepons(thats basic not counting "Fun" weapons such as dildos n silly things.), and so on. Then add in a Online MMO style leveling similar to WKC that has its own missiond and gear. Then R* will make me truly happy cause GTA4 was hampered because of it being multiplatform.
could it be GTA5 ps3 exclusive?
Whatever it is it's gonna be epic…
All I know it's NOT GTAV as that will definitely be multiplatform, won't be Max Payne 3 as we all know it's coming and it's a sequel….
So how long till E3? It's gonna burn me till then. Would be cool if it's like a GTA in Space, or a RPG from R*, maybe one with Vampires and Werewolves…
You can see I'm just pulling these ideas out of my A** cause it could be anything… I just want it to be epic in every way….
I still think this is the game that British journalist was hyping last year.
I call Vice City 2.
well i think its supose to be a new IP from the interview i saw.
so its not LA noire, its not max payne 3 its not red dead redemtion.
what could it be man i wish E3 was tomorrow i cant wait.
I dont think the game will be a new GTA game or LA noire, becauese LA noire is already an exclusive and max payne has been announce for PC/PS3/360. Also A new GTA game thats exlsuive wouldn't be that exciting. I heard of some old western or game that will be a francise exclusive to PS3 from rockstar but i think they have something better. Who knows?. Hopefull it will be a great action game with guns.
