If it's going to be one of the prettiest games we've ever laid eyes on, shouldn't it run in the highest possible resolution available? Or is that just a pipe dream?
In this new age of high-definition gaming, it's easy to misunderstand the technical jargon, but let's just say there's a difference between software that natively runs in the highest possible resolution – 1080p – and software that upscales to that resolution. For instance, as gorgeous as Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was, it only ran in native 720p resolution; your PlayStation 3 would automatically select that setting when it read the disc. You can upscale to 1080p but unless the software natively supports it, the picture won't look the same (and of course, you have to have a TV that supports the maximum 1080p to even take part in this debate). Anyway, we've all been wondering if Final Fantasy XIII will run at a native 1080p and according to FF-XIII.net , the answer is "yes." Well, maybe. The PS3 automatically chooses the 1080p option to run the demo – the one that came with the Blu-Ray edition of "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" in Japan – but it's difficult to say if this is native or otherwise…
Evidently, certain aspects of the demo make it seem as if Square-Enix will give us a game that natively runs in 1080p, while other parts of the demo appear to be upscaled. They've got a couple shots at FF-XIII.net to examine – each a picture of Lightning's face – so you can see the difference… can you see it? Perhaps Square-Enix will clear this up in the coming months; does FFXIII go whole-hog and give us the best of the best when it comes to high-def visuals?

I noticed just a feint bit of blurriness in the upscaled picture but it's nothing I would be concerned about if it did run in 720 it still looks brilliant.

It seems most games are in 720p. Looking forward to a more standard 1080p on all games, just as long everyone has a tv that supports 1080p.
I would hope that it would be native 1080p. This game has been in dev for half a decade, and is coming out over 3 years into the HD gaming generation. There are disappointingly few native 1080p titles considering how long the PS3 has been on the market. This game needs to raise the bar, or at least, come close to it.
I really hope that it runs native at 1080p but is that even technically possible on the 360 and didn't they want these two versions to be as identical as possible? So, I think that this is just a pipe dream.
………….the upscaled version seems a bit…and I MEAN A BIT!!! less blurry. But who in the world would actually see that one their T.V screen? Either way the freaking game looks gorgeous.
Oh and let's see…how it ends up on the 360 – can't wait for the differences to appear.

until i get a 1080p plasma and throw my 720p in the bedroom i can't tell what i'm missing. man i wish i was rich. that said, wasn't it reported to be 720p native previously?
Yeah i'm pretty sure it was confirmed that it would be 720p I think i read it in edge i'm not sure where i read it, butI definitely did. Hi everyone – i'm an avid reader i can't remember if this is the first time i've posted or not- i can't seem to remember a lot of things.
running at 1080p would be a challenge for both consoles – depending on the graphics. 1080p will fill more space on the game disc so for 360 in particular it might not be the best choice.
Perhaps that will be a defining difference between the full fat PS3 version and the port to the 360?
Yeah but I thought that the 360 upscaled everything to 1080p and did not have a native 1080p capability due to the fact that the early models did not have HDMI ports. I could be wrong but I thought that if you had a signal running over analog composite cables the best you could hope for was an upscale 1080p.
Component video can push 1080i for sure, so the game could render to 1080 resolution, even if the 360 version uses interlacing rather than progressive scan.
Certainly the 360s GPU should be able to handle 1080p.
Couldn't some parts of the game be native 1080p and other parts upscaled? Does it have to be one or the other? I have no idea – I'm just asking.
I am pretty sure it can be both depending on how the code is written, and code can be written in a lot of different ways and work nicely within itself. Hell, you can write code in different languages and have it work so I see no reason why you couldn't utilize 720p and 1080p on the same disc.
Hey 1080p/i makes no difference to me…although as long as S-E has been working on FFXIII it should be in 1080p, lol.
Isn't 1080i worse than 720p? Think about it, only 540 lines would be on-screen at any one time compared to 720 lines
No, that's all wrong.
1080i is exactly the same resolution as 1080p except it's interlaced. In effect 1080p is 60 frames a second, and 1080i is 30, but the 30 1080i frames are sent as 60 halves that are then interlaced (reassembled). So each 1080i frame is a complete 1920×1080 in resolution.
720p is about 1Mpixel, 1080p is about 2Mpixel. 1080i and 720p use about the same amount of processing to achieve. However for fast action titles 720p is preferrable since it is smoother. 1080i is fine for games with slower less 'real time' graphics, and in a RPG (depending on the combat system) 1080p shouldn't be an issue.
Sounds great, I'm loving my new 1080p TV in the bedroom. This game really should be native at 1080p, it is really going to have to perform fantastic on all fronts not just to sell copies but to soften SE's image with the public. If it gets dragged down for equality with the port I'd be upset.
Is the difference really that noticeable between 720p and 1080p?
Yep, it is. 720p is 1280×720 resolution. 1080p is 1920×1080. So it's 2.25 times more pixels in image.

Oh okay. But I still think it won't be too noticeable in a small TV.
Well, WKC is, why shouldnt FF13?
I'll give you one guess, and it consists of 3 numbers.
… 3.14?
I hope it does but so few game run 1080p natively. I think they will make it 720p for easy conversion to the 360, but I don't make games so IDK.
I got my fingers crossed for 1080p (and 1080p on Versus XIII).

I could tell the difference between the two, and I'm pretty sure that if I can do that on my non-HD computer screen for a still image, then it will look much more brilliant on my 40" HD television in real-time. Exciting stuff!
Anyone who cannot see the difference in those two screen shots has got to be blind. That 1080p shot is gorgeous. I can't wait. But could it be that the fmv is 1080p but the game play is upscaled 720p?
It could very well be.
I gotta say I don't think we'll ever get a straight answer out of SE on this one for the final product. They'll be all "Oh umm, you see… errr it's 1080p, but ahhh…."
I was wondering the same thing this morning!! WOW! you read my mind
I think it'll be in SD resolution for the Xbox. Anything more than 4 dvds will be ridiculous for a game.
Damn I just got my demo in today, no install, and this game looks absolutely stunning in HD. Im going out of my way here to say it looks leaps and bounds over Killzone 2. I'm so curious how this will even translate well on the Xbox 360. There will have to be some corners cut, some extreme amount of corners cut.
I bought myself a Sony Bravia HD as soon as I saved up the money for it. Okay not the biggest one there is but definitely a very nice sized one. And it can run 1080p with no problem.
I've seen some other TV's that are way bigger but the picture just isn't as good as the Bravia's quality.Even 720p looks freakin' amazing on the Bravia. So I can just imagine what native 1080p will look like…..
All I can say after all the disappointment we had by the hands of Square-Enix that is the least they can do and make the PS3 run at native 1080p. If the 360 can't handle it because of disk space or whatever then let them run it at 720p-1080i. But DON'T shaft us just because the 360 can't have it in 1080p.
If they actually adhere to my prayers here, we'll see the PS3 version definitely outsell the 360 at 8:1 at least. Might even move more consoles than any other game thus far…
