It's usually a bad idea to make predictions, but as we've scrutinized the list of titles scheduled for 2009 – and we've done it more than once – we're starting to think that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will run away with many Game of the Year awards from various major publications once the year is over. Its closest competition could very well be Killzone 2 , but sometimes, we just have to admit that an extended period of time between a game's release and the GoY Awards translates to diminished interest. This is why they try to produce Oscar hopefuls towards the end of the year.
You've probably been reading some hands-on impressions of the game, and we're positive you know all about the upcoming multiplayer beta test . Well, we saw the game in action a little while back and Arnold says it's the best-looking console game he's ever seen. Yes, ever . Then, if you take into account that the first game was absolutely phenomenal, and the addition of multiplayer and even more gameplay enhancements for the sequel…well, it's difficult to argue. God of War III won't make it until next year and although we're holding out hope for Gran Turismo 5 , we seriously doubt it'll happen. Many games have plenty of potential this year but if there's one thing we're 99.9% sure of, it's that Uncharted 2 will be yet another absurdly refined and wonderfully satisfying action experience. Everything we've seen and heard thus far puts it further and further ahead of most any other title on the horizon, and again, only Killzone 2 appears to be a major contender for the crown.
It's going to be gorgeous. It's going to feature the same rock-solid mechanics from Drake's Fortune , only with the added benefit of more options and diversity. The story is going to be deeper and more involving as we've heard about a stronger emphasis on Drake's character. There's going to be competitive and co-op multiplayer. Now, we hate to be rash and say, "just give Uncharted 2 the big award right now," but we will certainly say it's a favorite. Or perhaps, to be more accurate, the favorite. Anyone have any objections?

So many amazing exclusives… I think my head is going to explode…
GT5 will win if it makes it out this year, but this will win otherwise.
Asw much as i am looking roward to GT5, i dont think it would get GOTY anyway. Its not as accessible as Uncharted. GT is all about being 100% realistic and perfect, but Uncharted is both visually stunning, has a great script, perfect voice acting, production value that makes Hollywood look like a teenager with iMovie…
GT5 will be awesome (and probably the best racer ever), but it just cant do as much as Uncharted.
Agreed Chico – I think more people are interested in GT5 than Uncharted 2. Has a vastly larger following.
Morne
It may have a larger following, but that doesn't make it game of the year. I'm sure a whole bunch of people buy every new Madden game every year, but those are far from ever being the best game that year. Sorry sports fans.
GT5 will be like the sweetest of candies for racing fans, tight controls and pretty visuals, but it's pretty cut and dry. Race, upgrade, race, etc. For my money, I'd like a game that draws you into it's story and environment, shows you something you've never seen and lets you do things you could never do in real life. If I want to play football, I'll go outside. If I want to drive a car, I'll hop in mine. But if I want to scale a cliff side as it's collapsing while fending off pirates and avoiding traps, then I'm probably gonna pop in ole' Drake and fire up the PS3.
No real offense to all those who love sports and "realistic" racing games, I play em every now and then, but I prefer a game with a little imagination. Especially if it's fighting for that coveted GOTY award. lol
No offense, but what new grounds is Uncharted actually breaking? Platformers have been around for ages. Great graphics are a dime a dozen (invest in a gaming PC, Uncharted is small potatoes). Multiplayer? Well, I got my fill in MP with Wolfenstein on Doom. So where exactly is the uncharted waters being tread here with this IP? Hmm? Stellar snow graphics? Nice!
Guess what, if I want to scale a cliff, I'll go and grab my brother's harnesses, ropes and other belaying equipment. Equally, I could jump in my BMW, and go driving around in that.
So, no offense, but you really gave no real reasons why Uncharted 2, will fair any better than Gran Turismo 5 in the run for GOTY, however, I can safely say, it won't sell nearly as many units.

Luckily sales do not a GOTY contender, make.
I never said it was breaking new ground or it was going to be game of the year. But typically GOTY goes to a product with the most appealing combination of graphics, gameplay elements (including multiplayer,) level/track design and story.
While I have no doubt GT5 will sweep any Best Racing Game category, it will have to do something really special and unexpected to be nominated for the grand prize.
Guess what? If you go scale cliffs as they collapse under you while fending off pirates and avoiding traps in real life, then more power to you. Seems a bit dangerous to me, which is why I play games rather than risk my neck. What's that? Oh you left out the second part of my example cause you were trying to make a point? How's that working for ya?
A BMW! GOOD FOR YOU!!! You throw that out there looking for respect?
Sorry, cheap shot, but come on!
I'll gladly eat my words if GT5 pulls a rabbit out of it's tail pipe and wows the industry, but I'm fairly certain GOTY is going to a game that goes above and beyond a race track.
Yeah, and nor does Uncharted 1 or 2. What are you missing here? It's not a GOTY contender, cause it really does nothing new. Period. LBP got a chunk of them, and Fallout 3 got others. Figured that out yet? Are you that retarded? I said GT5 has a BETTER CHANCE, not that it WILL. God, learn to read.
You're the one who made the comment about 'jumping in your car' if you want to drive. Point is, if I want to climb, I can do that, if I want to drive, I can do that too. Follow? Or should I slow down for you to catch up?
Don't really care what you do with your words. I'm merely saying, Uncharted 2, has less of a chance to get GOTY, than Gran Turismo 5. Period.
Morne
Guess I got under your skin dude. Take it easy. If YOU would read above, at NO point did I ever say that Uncharted 1 or 2 was GOTY or a contender for said award. I merely pointed out that the GOTY usually has certain qualities, you mentioned two fantastic games, neither of which involve racing a car. Do you get it?
Exactly what is it that GT5 does that's new? I am missing something I guess. I'm wondering why you're defending something you've never played, and condemning something you've also never played. Now that sounds retarded to me.
Yes, I said if I wanted to drive I'd hop in my car. You were the one dropping a brand name like it means something. Comes across as self-important and a bit smug, but I guess that's all we can expect from someone who signs every post.
Yes, people who can't read correctly, and attempt to infer conclusions where I drew none, get under my skin. I guess I just expect an unacceptable level of education these days.
Again, we're going round and round here over the same basic point. GT and Uncharted really don't do much that's 'new' for anything. However, GT has, and always will lead the way in realism both for cars, and the tracks that accompany the game. Whereas, what really…has Uncharted done that's not just repackaged Tomb Raiding? Don't get me wrong, I've 100% it 3 times…but seriously, I can accept that Uncharted really just repackages Tomb Raider in a shiny new box, it was fun as hell, but still, not really worthy of GOTY. And…just because it has Multiplayer, doesn't mean it's automatically awarded it either.
So…my having a BMW seems smug to you? Maybe I dropped the brand name, because it's something that I can and have played around with in GT? Maybe, it's simply you who's insecure with your vehicle and or current status in life…or lackthereof? Personally, I don't really care. I'll enjoy both games, and my car.
I still say GT5 will have more of a chance for GOTY than Uncharted 2. GT series always breaks new ground in physics, realism and hopefully from what we're hearing, racing teams creation and the like.

It's going to have to be fan-frickin-tastic after they went for GTAIV last year ONLY because they wanted to pick a multi-plat to satisfy everyone. Well, at the VGA awards at least. Some saner publications picked MGS4.
don't forget infamous. sucker punch might have some suprises on that
CoD:UO has and continues to be the best iteration of the entire series.
Morne
My bet is that Modern Warfare 2 will take home most GOY awards. Even if it isn't all that improved or ground breaking, the fact that it is the sequal to COD4 will give it an advantage.
Don't people get tired of so many COD's,Dam I feel like 5 just came out.COD is becoming(or is)like sports games now.
I have a bad feeling that Call of Duty will soon be the Guitar Hero of shooters.
but cod4 was soooo good best mp game on ps3! my opinion is nuthing as beaten cod4 to this date and i hoping mw2 ill b better
its definitely my favorite for sure!!!!
Dude, seriously? No.
If we're going by games that have to come out this year, GOTY for most people will likely go to Heavy Rain. The multiplayer will look sparse in comparrison to MAG.
And there's stll nothing to suggest God Of War III won't make it out this year.
GoW3, Heavy Rain, and MAG arent even slated to come out this year. Most everyone is expecting those to release early next year. If they do happen to land this year, it will likely be after the GotY awards.
Heavy Rain has a 2009 release, and last time I checked MAG did to. Sony have consistantly said that Heavy Rain will release this year so I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt on that one. As for MAG I agree with you on that one, I guess it all depends on how successful the beta is that's coming up.
I would also look at the information on each game. We have tons of info and screens on Uncharted 2, and since we have played the first one, we can make a much better assumption about it than we can about MAG or Heavy Rain. But its like I said, if they do drop this year, its going to be too late for them to be a nominee for the GotY awards. Delays are very keen to happen to games like these.
Actually, just about all evidence says God of War III will be released in March 2010. And as much as I want Heavy Rain, I really don't see it even being nominated.
Well Ben it's going to shock you then.If Heavy Rain comes out this year I am positive it will win goty,It will stand out from the other sameness games.
yes yes yes yes yyyyyeeeessss
Hahahaha…I remember someone exclaiming on Gametrailers comments on the multiplayer video of Uncharted 2…"OMG UNCHARTED 2 WILL BE GAME OF THE YEAR" and he got a -15 rating.
Now if someone does that with God of War III or GT 5….oh boy they will know who was the one who gave the bad rating and delete your account.
LOL
I see it this way.
To be honest.
Gran Tourismo 5
Modern Warfare 2
Uncharted 2
Definitely with you on Gran Turismo, chief.
Morne
is eveyone forgeting bioshock also has multyplayer lol
Yes, and I believe it's intentional.
Morne
I liked Uncharted one alot easily the best game of 2007 but i dont think you can really make that claim untill the end of the year, as others have mentioned there are alot of titles being released this year, I personally have high hopes for Heavy Rain.
I'm now a bit doubtful on U2, has it been said to be a co-op game like RE5 which a female bot, or is there single campaign just one character one there own at a time.
Yeah, I have objections. It's april, it's stupid to predict something like 'game of the year' now.
X-………. GTFO!
I'd say it'll be out of Street Fighter IV, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, though knowing modern auidences it probaly will go to something stupid like the batman game.
Edit: Lol he deleted his comment.

I wish it will turn out like this, but I am really not too sure. The main contenders will be PS3 exclusives this year though, so I will be happy either way! I think the games in the mix for GOTY will be:
Modern Warfare 2
Uncharted 2
Bioshock 2
Infamous(I really hope)
Killzone 2(only on a few sites or shows, not everyone loved it)
Street Fighter 4
This is just from what we know about though, there is no way microsoft is going to not put out any more exclusives this year, so E3 will be a big show for them, but an even bigger show for sony since they are now in the lead with software. Oh and Nintendo…..maybe Wii Play 2: the return of useless minigames? All around, going to be a great year, and I can't wait!
Meh, I certainly hope MW2 doesn't make it. Honestly, I hope it tanks.

Uncharted was (and still is) one of the best-looking (imo) games on the PS3. Even though Ive gone through it all and got Platinum, I still go through it again, looking at all the detail.
Was a bit dubious when rumoured that Uncharted 2 would have multiplayer, but after seeing video, I'm hoping that if Naughty Dog can pull of the same graphics and gameplay (though i'm sure it's been said that U2 will use more of the PS3's processing power than the original)as the first, then this is going to be a great game. Like others' have said though, I just hope that single player hasn't been sacrificed (but i'm sure it hasn't).
True that, but graphics do not a Game of the Year contender, make. Look at Fallout3, wasn't exactly a stunning visual feast on the consoles, but was still given GoTY.
Morne
I would still choose killzone 2, i guess i play favorites. FPS is my thing and they blew the genre out of the water big time. It's perfect and I will always give it a 10/10.
Also dont forget Dead Rising 2, i just watched the new trailer, i reckon it will be a solid contender.
Here's the problem with Heavy Rain, people:
I'm sure I will love it, and it should receive high praise for its story, the innovative way it TELLS the story, the artistry and atmosphere, etc. But like Indigo Prophecy, which sported these same bonuses, I believe it will be lacking in the actual gameplay department. It won't be bad, per se, but I do believe it will certainly play a secondary role in the production.
Games like this NEVER get Game of the Year. There just isn't enough there in terms of overall interactivity. It might get individual awards – especially for the story – but Game of the Year is out of the question. Mark my words.
Got to agree, I'm looking forward to it too, but goty just doesn't go to that type of game no matter how good it is.
What do you mean lacking in gameplay, yes there are the cutscenes mix with button combinations (cant remember the term lol) but i never found that a problem with Farenheit or Shenmue, i found it very ingaging, Farenheit has probaly been one of the most interactive games ive played, sure you cant explore an open world, but theres a vast amount of things you can do in the area, when on some huge landscape games there not so interactive or very repetative and unlike fable your actions do make a difference.
i love the first mission with the crime scene then straight after you play as the detectives. My only problem with Farenheit is that it when a bit to far on the supernatural side, but apparently Heavy Rain isnt ment to go that far so i reckon it will be fantastic.
Okay. But were any of those games nominated for Game of the Year…?
Bioshock 2 is going to be a contender also. Uncharted 2, MW2 or Bio 2 are the top 3 this year
What about Modern Warfare 2??? BioShock? MAG? Heavy Rain? hell even Operation Flash Point has something running too.
You a re right though, Killzone 2 will be forgoten by the time GOTY awards start to roll out, it wont even be mentioned, thats waht happens when you release AAA material so early on the year…..
Anyway I think you jumped to conclusions way to quick on this one Ben, too many AAA games yet to really show what they are made off, you might change your opinion once E3 rolls out
Hey B Dukat, Jeff R. on the Sony Blog propped you up man on your Drake's 2 prediction. Nice!

hey don't forget, Resident Evil 5 is also a strong contender for GOTY this year. Heavy Rain won't probably win the GOTY award but I'm sure it will receive other awards like best in story or probably best in graphics.
The co-op for this thing sounds amazing! Hope you can localally co-op too…
This game's hot!
Naughty Dog has ALWAYS been this great!
I agree that Killzone 2 may be forgotten by that time, but I hope this is not going to be the case. For some reason it seems difficult to imagine Uncharted 2 to win GOTY. I think it may be because it was so underrated before, but maybe now that the PS3 has a larger install base it will make a larger splash!
