Get $100 Off PS3 With A PS2 Trade-In

Maybe you don't own a PlayStation 3 just yet. We haven't the slightest idea how any serious gamer could ignore the machine that, in our opinion, has all the momentum in the world right now, but we're sure there could be extenuating circumstances. The economy, for example.

So if you haven't yet made the leap to the new generation (it ain't so "new" anymore, either), you may want to take advantage of a great promotion GameStop is currently running. As discovered by Joystiq , if you trade in a PS2 and three games, you get $100 off the price of a new 80GB PS3! Obviously, you'll need the pertinent accessories that come in the box of any PS2; the power cable, AV cables and DualShock 2 controller, and yeah, the PS2 games have to be eligible. By now, though, frequent GameStop customers should be very familiar with the "exclusion list" that always applies to trade-in promotions. And don't complain; it hardly makes sense to let you trade in archaic sports games worth about $.50 apiece in order to receive $100 off a PS3 purchase. Still, the good news is that most PS2 games will be eligible, as they only need to be worth at least $2 in trade for them to count towards this deal. A new PS2 retails for $100, and they're giving you that for your old system (and three almost worthless old games), so this should be pretty attractive. The only downside is that the PS3 no longer offers backwards compatibility for PS2 software…it's a definite caveat, but many gamers – especially the casuals – really don't care.

So anyway, now might be the time to finally put yourselves amongst the ever-growing crowd of proud PS3 owners. Call your local GameStop to see how long they'll be running this promotion, and maybe if the three PS2 games you have selected with qualify.

That is not a deal. If you have a ps2 library of games you have to have a ps2 to play them on since there is no BC on the ps3, and a new ps2 is going to cost you another 100.00 plus the money you lose trading in games.

… but I need my PS2 to play my PS2 games. I can't sacrifice a huge PS2 library for my measly PS3 library (I had a 60Gb, it died, I'm bitter).

Although… I'm dying to play some more Valkyria Chronicles 🙁 I was just getting really into it.

TERRIBLE deal, especially since a price cut is coming.

You don't know that.

Never said I did, simply using a little common sense and basic logic to determine one is coming. By the way even if I'm wrong about the price cut coming by summer this still is a terrible deal.

It's not really a terrible deal at all. You're saying that the (allegedly) impending price drop is making this bad? That doesn't make sense. They'll probably run this deal until the pricedrop happens, so you're essentially getting it early.
Here's my situation:
A friend of mine is literally one hundred dollars away from getting a PS3. I have a backwards compatible one, so my PS2 is gathering dust in my gaming drawer. He's got old games to give away, so this all works out completely and smoothly for us! Good deal, good deal!

New generation? I thought the PS3 was the "next" generation?! Ahh! All the mixed messages!!!

This is great! Just go buy a used ps2 from a pawnshop for $30 and trade that in! $70 off right there and you still have your own PS2. BAM!

Wont a ps2 run for at least 50 bucks at gamestop? besides I don't think those drones will let you do that right on the spot, best thing to do is buy a ps2 (if it's cheap) walk out and go to a different gamestop

NO THIS IS A TERRIBLE DEAL…for those that love their PS2 games and can't get enough of them…and for those who missed out on the PS2 generation (I'm both). If you have 1 PS2 and trade it in…oh yay…I get $70 off…the other $30 is from the 3 games that have to be worth $2 or more according to them!!! Now I have 3 games that I can give away easily…but I certainly don't want to give away my only PS2 in which I can play my awesome PS2 games. Now…if this 80gb PS3 had backwards compatibility I wouldn't be complaining one bit. But that's not the case is it?

Dell has been giving away the 80gig ps3 for 300 dollars for the past 4 days. Plus Dell has been selling both the 80 gig and the 160gig at 20% off with free shipping for over 3 months.

TRUE. I got mine from DELL back in January, 360$ total.

I think this deal is just for people who don't care about keeping their last gen machines around, and there are plenty of those. So people shouldn't call it a bad deal.

OK….this sounds like a good deal – actually – if you are wanting to upgrade and don't care about backwards compatibility.

However, there is something that is interesting here, a used PS2 with 1 working controller and 3 games worth at least $2 a piece? Considering that a brand new PS2 retails at $99, and you can buy cheap used games from the cheap used games bin, why on earth would Gamestop offer this deal? They can't possibly be selling used PS2s for much more than $50 a pop, and they will be very fortunate to get $50 for the three games.

It's interesting though, $100 discount? That makes the price $299, which is precisely what everyone expects Sony to drop the PS3 price to. So is this a case of a promotional discount being a precursor of a real discount?

yea trade in a ps2 and 3 games, and in 2 months ps3 drops to 300 dollars, so if this does happen i'm saying that gamestop gets free ps2's and games, and nothing we can do about it, imma have to wait and see how this turns out.

I suspect this offer will end about the same time the price cut goes into effect. Is there anything gamestop does that isn't remotely shady?

Meh, i'd keep the PS2 as the new PS3s cant play PS2 games.

If you don't care about playing your PS2 games anymore, good deal. Otherwise not worth it, unless you can score a working one for cheap.

The whole reason I think backwards compatibility is sort of overrated is because virtually everyone who loves and/or owns PS2 games already has a PS2 system. My PS3 and PS2 are hooked out through different outputs on my TV. What's so horrible about that? But that obvious solution to the BC issue isn't possible with this trade-in deal. I'll say this though — any PS2 owners looking to make the jump to the glorious PS3 via this deal can always go pick up a new, slim PS2 some time down the road when you have the $100 to spare. You won't miss your PS2 too much for a few weeks or months, will ya?

They can try to get my PS2 "fatty" when they can pry it from my cold clammy fingers, once I'm dead!!!!!
(And I'm buying a new silver "slim" model, just so my lil chubby can get in a little shelf-time 4-play with his new playstationmate).

FYI…..You do know that if you have the "fatty" model PS2, that it's got more bells & whistles(more ports, USB, ETC, ETC) that the newer "slim" model doesn't have(or has less of)??? (just like a 60 gigger PS3, compared to all the other PS3's too).

Shadow an I were discussing the same thing the other day in the forums . I think this is really helpful for people who are no longer playing on their PS2 but are reluctant to buy a PS3 due to price .

I find this whole concept a tad ridiculous. I bought my PS2 and rather large library of PS2 games with the intention of keeping them all. Wouldn't giving all that up defeat the entire purpose of this decision? With a deal like that I would just wait a while till I had enough extra cash regardless of how long it took… then get it. And trust me, that will take a while.

I'm still not done with my ps2 and even if i was, i wouldn't fall for this.

That's a horrible deal especially for some one who may have a few PS2 games they still want to play. If they trade in 3 of their PS2 games and their PS2 console for a $100 off of a non BC PS3 , how are they suppose to play their remaining PS2 games !

It makes no sense that they would go and buy another PS2 console !

I bought the launch 60GB and I'm damn glad it has BC because I find myself playing some of my PS2 games that I never quite finished when I first bought them and since my PS2 died, the BC is really a welcomed feature on my PS3 !

Come on Sony support the people who have supported you and return BC to the PS3 ! Some people actually want BC and they are buying the current PS3 models thinking they will play PS2 games only to find that they do not !
