So Square-Enix has officially closed the deal with Eidos; the UK publisher is now owned by the veteran RPG giant. But many are asking the same question: how exactly will this acquisition affect Eidos?
Well, according to Joystiq and a recently released Eidos press release, the company says they will "continue to function as an independent operation, as a wholly-owned subsidiary" of Square-Enix. Phil Rogers will remain the CEO and he will report directly to S-E president Yoichi Wada, who has called this deal an "international marriage" of sorts. As it stands, Eidos will still be known as just that – "Eidos" – and they won't adopt a new name that reflects their new owner, so you can all stop with the witty name blends now. 😉 It seems as if S-E plans to be the silent puppet-master in this new "marriage," because even though Eidos will continue to "operate independently," they clearly can't do anything unless Wada and Co. give the green light. Perhaps the next question is this: how often and to what extent will Square-Enix press their will upon Eidos in terms of specific projects? From what we can gather, Eidos will just continue on doing what they've been doing and Square-Enix will benefit from the product rights, but we don't know if the owner will one day go to their new piece of property and say, "okay guys, we need something like this." Only time will tell but for now, the deal and situation appears to be cut and dry.
Square-Enix always said they wanted more of a Western influence; well, they got it with Eidos, which tends to publish Western-oriented titles. Let's just hope we don't see some bizarre "marriage" of Lara Croft and Cloud Strife…
they could have purchased a better company
Majesco perhaps?
SquEnix appears to have changed considerably over the years. I'd like to see less achieved by acquisition and more achieved by software development.
How on earth does a comment asking for a game developer to pay more attention to game development and less to corporate growth attrack a thumbs down?
Good grief.
Been lots of thumb down action today. Just look at the article about the PS3 garnering better games in all the genres.
I sense a lot of xbots are responsible for all the thumbs down lately
We could see some sweet new IP's coming from this new "marriage"
Let's hope!
Ah, so nothing will change. Eidos will still release their crap and it'll still take SE forever to release FF games. Sweet!
No way no how, when the big shots take over another company, sooner or later they manipulate the hell out of them. They are just keeping their name off of Eidos right now in case the first few projects that come out are crap then SE won't get as soiled in the press.
Lara and Cloud's child would be reidiculously strong and have a massive shotgun lol.
and massive knockers
Worst case scenerio; we wait for a 360 exclusive tomb raider and watered down multiplatform titles from here on out.
Best case scenerio; SE gives Eidos resources to revamp soul reaver and other eidos gems.
this only paves their way for more 360 exclusives
We all know it's true, there must have been some sort of rift between Sony and Square Enix. What else could explain their actions? Multiplatform is NOT about putting most of your games in practically every console except the PS3 with the exception of a scrap they toss at us sometimes for the PSP! Thumbs down for stating the obvious? Some people on here are truly immature.
